If you need to carry a cello, the MX-5 is out. You could possibly fit it with the top on if you completely unbolt the passenger seat, and the only way it's fitting in the trunk is if you cut the floor out of the trunk and leave your spare at home.

For a cellist, a first-generation Fit with a stick is an awesome car. Awesome to drive. Awesomely cheap to own. Possibly within your price range. Only thing cheaper on gas than a Fit are a Civic VX and a Geo Metro, which are definitely within your price range but possibly older than you.
It's not "fast", but you wouldn't know it from the wind whistling past the A-pillars at 80 mph. And few cars can cut a rug as well as the Fit. Maybe the Mazda2, but that has less cargo space and there are no secondhand ones within your range yet.
And it's easy to countersteer. Perhaps that will delay your first crash, perhaps not, but it's good to know.
