So next summer I'm gonna get a job and from my calculations I should make about $5k and today while driving around with my parents I saw a red Mazda RX-7 FC and I'm just wondering are older generation rotary engines good or should I just look around for a more reliable car?

I doubt a rotary engined car for $5k will be very reliable.
How about...

In before Miata. No, but really, a Miata is a great choice for a first sporty car. As is the Nissan 240SX, a popular drift car for most, but also loved for its practicality, reliability, and generally being inexpensive fun. On the other spectrum, there are many great front wheel drive sporty Japanese cars. The Toyota Celica, Acura Integra, and Honda Civic Si are all great choices here, but beware that Integras have a bad habit of being stolen.

Another car I'd suggest is the Nissan 300ZX (The first one, not the larger, second one). It looks nice, is pretty speedy, and it's a classic. I found one in mint condition on the local Craigslist for 7,000, so a 300ZX with reasonable miles and still in decent condition shouldn't be hard to find. Unfortunately, most people don't know what the hell they're doing with these cars, so most of them are crap. But there are some good ones out there, and they're great cars. Of course, there's also the older Z cars which are also great sports cars. The 280Z will be the next easiest to find car; but a bit rare. I found 2 on Ebay for 1,500 or under, and those were both rather rough, but I'm sure a good one can be had for 5,000. If you find a good example of one of these, go for it.

If its your first car, get something that you can depend on for every day work & that gets good gas mileage before you start messing around with cars.

I don't have a specific car model... I imagine you are a new driver, so I'd suggest a car that can get from A to B quickly, good around town and doesn't use up much fuel.. You'd probably need a car with low mileage.. But you may not find a car that fits this category, it all depends where you look. Look around town, websites, garages... Etc. Find a car that you connect with and really like... If you are a new driver aswell, I suggest getting a cheaper car because of the insurance..

Hope I helped!

Can I have your M3?

 No, you cannot, I love her! She's called SilverEagle... Don't ask why I named her that, lol. Any ideas on which car you will get?

Probably a reliable car to start with. I'm think a civic si or something like that. A sporty manual would be good because I can take it to trackday

How about an E30 3 series? Not quite an E92 M3, but better for a first car.

Disclaimer: I am, admittedly, a bit of a BMW fanboy.

Lol a E30 is worth more than my house I think

 I'd try and give you some advice but I just got my first car, the BMW.. Well when I say my I mean my mum and dad got me my first car... :scared: Buy Japanese!

Yay! I'm probably gonna get a Honda a my parents know some guy and he can probably get a good deal for me. I've seen a used EP3 going for about $5,000

And its a Honda so it won't break down and it's a hatch so I can put stuff in it

I saw a 1999 M3 for the same price, but I'm worried about maintainence costs

Well, where I live I've barely ever seen a '99 M3, but I don't know if there common where you live, so.. I was thinking if something broke. Maintenance... Hmmm, probably be a bit for maintenance if your on a tight budget.. Especially if your buying an M3.. I still say Japanese is the way forward!

Yeah, maybe when I get older I'll get something euro

I'm going to assume the PA/America means Pennsylvania.

If it's your first car and you're a new drive just buy something cheap and easy to fix, so a mid-90's American compact will work well. They'll be cheap to buy, cheap to run and cheap to insure, also when you crash it a trip to the local junkyard will yield any part you could ever need. If you have a burning desire to modified it you'll be able to do that as well pretty easily. I'm partial to Dodge Neon's because they are everywhere and were mildly fun to drive. I'd stay away from J-bodies though.

If you've been drive for a few years and are finally getting your own car, then something a little nicer, like the Civic you mentioned, wouldn't be bad.

Consider that the EP3 was probably the worst Civic Si we've ever had, and the only model of that body type, replacement parts are probably a lot more scarce/expensive than any other recent Civic.

Eric.

I'm a good driver...
