I've been trying to download Windows Live Messenger but it shows this:

You might not be but if you have auto-update turned on for any number of programs, your machine could be.

Have you tried restarting the computer? An update may have auto downloaded but won't complete until the computer has restarted.

Set windows updates to ask you to download and install updates(Keep it from automatically downloading right away). Plus you should try to download the latest version of windows live essentials from Microsoft.
