I understand that the visuals have been remade in UE5. Is the base gameplay engine still Creation?
I don't believe it was changed, but if it was then they took great care in making sure it still has the Oblivion Jank™ that gave the original its charm. I've certainly seen some of the questionable pathfinding and wacky item physics that I remembered from way back in 2006.

Its UE5 on top of the Creation engine. Impressively they retextured everything and likely uses Lumen GI, with two graphic modes on Series X. It looks modern but feels classic.

Admittedly I was worried at first and thought "oh no, this looks a little too good", but then I got into the Imperial City, saw that the NPC's all have Jim Carrey-ish rubber faces and the added lip syncing is just off enough to greatly exaggerate that, and was quite satisfied that it's still very much Oblivion. Like they were really careful to make sure it wasn't that noticeable in the opening part with the emperor, but beyond that... not so much.

I first played Oblivion straight after finishing Skyrim as a felt i needed more of that Elder Scrolls crack. Didn't enjoy it as much at the time as Skyrim had moved everything on graphically and in comparison Oblivion just felt old. Watched the trailor for this last night and it's got me pining for Cyrodiil once again. It looks gooood.

Perhaps one to add to the watchlist for when its discounted.

I finally tried Hot Wheels Unleashed since I got it free from PS Plus.

It's quite fun but after a while my rage is unleashed.

Is this game supposed to be this hard? I'm on medium difficulty here and it's gradually getting harder.

Days Gone Remastered (PS5). Not sure it needed a remaster, but I am happy to play it again with some added game modes/featrures. Think the original game was a bit underrated and easy to dismiss as another zombie game. But surprisingly likable characters, a decent story told well, gorgeous world to explore and a fantastic soundtrack makes it a hidden gem if you ask me.

Well, after I got excited by Oblivion's Remaster, I decided to try the game whose spotlight it somewhat robbed: Clair Obscure Expedition 33. I'm just one hour into it and the start is strong and haunting. It reminds me of Final Fantasy X and a time when I enjoyed turn-based JRPGs before they became 100-hour behemoths.

My turn-based combat skills are rusty AF...

Concurrently, I still gallop around the feudal Japanese countryside, hunting for every ornament vendor I can find and wondering if Bonsai trees are in the game... Ah, yes, and kill a local warlord, and some bandits too.

I keep seeing people compare Expedition 33 to FFX, with FFX being my favourite FF game it has peaked my interest, I had never even heard of the game until now.

Reviews look great, I'll add this to the list of games I will pick up later in the year along with Indiana Jones, Forza Horizon 5, Robocoo Unfinished Business and GTA6, looking like a good year to be a Playstation gamer 😀

Still mucking around with GT7 custom races against Sophy. Created a little series of cars maxed out at 220hp, 1200kgs and 250km/h. Makes for some fun racing, particularly around Tokyo Expressway.

Yeah, while I'm not normally one for zombie/horror games. Gave Days Gone a chance when it was on PS+ a few years back and I was super glad I did. Fantastic story (albeit it maybe drags on a little too long) and honestly, one of the best open worlds I've experienced. It really nailed the whole vibe of being in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

Super glad it's gotten a remaster. Hoping this encourages more people to play it.

I remember back in Summer of 2022 when I had my PS Plus subscription, that was featured in one of the months where they let you download three games for free. Hot Wheels Unleashed was one of them and I was unsure about it so I skipped it, but next time I see it I will definitely give it a try, what challenges and gameplay are in it? Idk if I should try it now, now that read that you had difficulty with it. Hmmmm...

I am considering going back and getting all the skill points for this once I beat the game. I already mentioned I was going to replay Spyro 2 with permanent superflame, but I am considering giving Spyro 1 a similar treatment via Gameshark codes since I had fun with it this year. I'll probably mess around with the prototypes of each game too since they have a lot of interesting stuff that never made it to the final.
So, I did exactly what I said I was going to do. I recently replayed Spyro 1 with a GameShark code, allowing me to use Super Flame throughout the entire game. Had a pretty good time with it, and the added bonus of that cheat helped spice things up a bit. It was nice being able to get gems faster than usual and defeat enemies in a single flame. My thoughts on this game have certainly evolved since my first playthrough. 👍

Of course, I played Spyro 2 again with super flame enabled and decided to take it a step further by using the in-game cheats to have all abilities already, an extra hit point, and make him red just for a change. This was meant to be a fun run, so I figured being able to play the levels Spyro 1 style and not having to pay Moneybags for the abilities would make for a better experience. Sure enough, it did, and while it wasn't as fun as I would have liked, it was a neat change of pace. I kind of wish I had played it after my last playthrough just because the experience was fresh in my mind, and I was still used to not having super flame, but at least I know now. Right now, I am going through my save games for Spyro 2 and getting all the skill points, which I should be done with soon. After that, I think I might finally give Spyro a break already because I am starting to get a little bored with it.

I feel like I have more or less achieved what I was going to do, and that was to get to know the games a bit more, so I could appreciate the remake more whenever I decide to play it. It was nice revisiting them, but I think now I might start shifting my focus towards NASCAR since it's been on my mind lately. These feelings tend to come around this time of the year for me and often peak around June, so I think I'll probably be playing them once again sometime.

  • Finished the first StarWars Outlaws DLC which was excellent 9/10
  • Tried to get into Blue Prince, but it has not clicked for me (yet). I think I don't like the core mechanic. Will try again some other time.
  • Played the Oblivion Remaster for a bit - will finish that eventually, but not right now.
  • I'm currently re-playing Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 - Still a 10/10 game
  • Got sucked all the way into Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - oh boy what a game so far.
