Nope, I never tried that. Did that help fix the fried motherboard issue? It was fried when it was near many of my own electronics in my room.

Depends if it is fried or not, what exactly happened?

The first point helped revive a late 90s Thinkpad when I thought it was suddenly dead but just needed a power drain to get it back running. The other option helped an early 00s Thinkpad, figured that out by luck really at the time but probably helps flex the motherboard a bit to work correctly again if you find the sweet spot. Maybe a better temporarily solution could be the oven trick people used for RROD, YLOD but no guarantee it will work or if it does, not for long. As you mentioned it was fried, could be any component failure so unlikely to be economical to repair.
 
Well, the laptop worked fine when plugged in (i.e. laptop battery dead), and I made the mistake of putting it in my room, where one of the plug holes in tge first plug extender were daisychained with the second plug extender to add more plugs. I connected my old laptop on it, only to have it pop.

It could be just power supply that broke or did you hear it come from laptop itself? Have you tried getting another power adapter to see if it works?

I don't have any compatible power adapters... Am I pretty much screwed and just wasted RM50?

Most likely if something has failed, laptop could be fine if just a power supply failure. Cost of a universal power adapter will likely cost more than that though. You could probably sell it for parts.

If you get another Acer, it might have same kind of power supply to utilise current one if it is not dead.

Actually, I'm looking for a Dell, after finding out that 2000s Acers have BPD. It's honestly my own fault for not doing actual proper research before I even went ahead and buy the thing.

What does BPD mean? Personally, never had an Acer laptop from the 2000s fail on me. That kind of era hardware, reliability is more dependent on what kind of chips they use. Any reason why you are looking at such old laptops, even newer generation Intel Ivy Bridge laptops shouldn't cost much more if you wanted XP support. If your old Acer laptop came with XP COA, you might be able to sell that for more than you paid for laptop if you wanted to recuperate the cost in a different way.

Brittle Plastic Disease

I had just found out after purchasing the laptop. It turns out this not only affects 90s Macs but also 2000s laptops, especially Taiwanese ABS plastic. Japanese ABS plastics also get affected from this too, but they held up slightly better than the Taiwanese counterparts do.
