A "copy" car based on a real life car. Because of the lack of choice in cars in GT5 (or so it seems), players began to create "replicas," using what there is in GT5 to copy another car in real life.
For example, a "replica" Camaro ZL1, which is not in the game, could be made using the Camaro SS, which is in the game.

Replica's don't only apply to GT5, it applies to real life too. You can take a normal car and turn it into a a different car. For example, in auto class back in high school, we took a Pontiac Fiero and turned it into a Lamborghini Countach. It didn't have the power and handling as a Lambo, but the exterior look almost exactly the same. So another way of looking at it, a replica is basically a car that you transform/replicate to look like something else.
My buddy has a Supra Celica, sounds weird but he took the front of a '90 Celica and used the back half of a '90something Supra and put the two together. My brother has a 2002 Civic but rebadged everything and changed it into an Acura 1.6 (leather seats and all).
