It's the same thing, only with lower quality visuals. ps2 games look a lot better on a 480 CRT 4:3.

Just to be clear, he means PS2 games being played on a PS3 look better on a 480i CRT, not that PS2 games look better than PS3 games on a 480iCRT. You know someone woulda tried to twist that :P

They look fine. The only problems with standard definiton and the PS3 occurs when you play a PS2 game on a PS3 and connect with an HDMI cable. That's when it "upscales" the 480i signal to 480p and makes things (according to people here, I haven't tried it myself) look like crap.

Actually, it doesn't look THAT bad. It's just a bit more jaggy.

Not all Ps2 games look bad, Killzone may just be the worst example I've seen but GradiusV looks the same and so does a few other games. Square games suffer like Front Mission 4.

do you guys realise that i'm asking about ps3 games running in standard def?

i made no reference to ps2 in my original post

btw i am in the uk which runs on PAL if that is any help.

johngt,

I have not tried it personally, but can only imagine that it looks stunning. I would think that using a S-Video would be minimum to realize the maximum clarity with a standard definition TV. If I get a chance to test it out I'll report back some real world results.

I would have to say it looked terrible on an 8 year old toshiba via S-video. Maybe that's just in comparison to the panny plasma I had it hooked up to 5 minutes before, but it was absolutely terrible. Still better than what the PS2 looks like on either TV, though.

I wouldn't have expected that. I guess I won't test it out. Better than PS2 graphics is nice to know. Better than Wii graphics on Standard Def?

interesting - i have got my ps2 connected via scart to a toshiba crt thats been around for a while.

However, my laptop has an s-video output and a vga output and the screen runs in Wide XGA (1280x800 @ 32bpp) which a wikipedia article told be was similar to 720p ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide_XGA ) - if i set it up right would i be able to get it to run thru my laptop at 720p or Wide XGA?

Probably not, as you stated, both your S-Video and VGA connections are outputs. Now if you had inputs on your laptop, I would say that it would be possible. There might be some USB, Firewire, or even PCMCIA card that will allow those inputs on your laptop.

Thanks very much

So...does all of this mean that I can hold up for a while and keep my standard TV for now? I'm really looking at some HDTVs at the minute, but if it isn't that much of a difference, then I can definitely wait some more time and save money in the interim.

I don't have a PS3, so I can't say for sure, but the Xbox 360 on a normal screen was still quite a significant improvement from an Xbox/PS2, so you aren't missing out on all of it.

I would still suggest you get a HDTV sometime in the future, though, as it is an even bigger improvement than you might think.
