What is your upload/download speed? This is how to improve.

That would make some sense. Gears of War seems to be quite demanding, as hosting is okay at 6 players, but when I start the match at 8, people start to complain about lag. That's where it's hitting the peak of my connection... Whereas hosting races in PGR3/TDU, it can take it. Shame I can't afford to upgrade it any further.

It seems to me that my upload speed should be faster, what do you think?

Yeah download is usually much faster than upload and yours looks about right for basic package. You should contact your internet provider and see if you can get a faster package for your area. They will usually double your upload speed for only $10.00 extra a month. Most people have the basic package.
Aparantly I am the only person that plays games online anywhere within a couple blocks of where I live. They never even realized there was a problem until I called. No one with regular internet even realized something was wrong. But once you start gaming online you truly test your internet connection.
Hopefully today they will have it fixed but I guess we will see.

Its been about 2 years of trial and error and a lot of patience. Oh and more frustration than you can possibly imagine. I was so tired of Comcast cable that I already ordered DSL and it was going to be hooked up tomorrow. However they finally ended up repairing all the cable lines to our house, replaced just about everything outside, and got us a new modem.
We were able to host a room in GRAW 2 last night with 14 people, didnt kick everyone from the room, and no lag. It was just amazing. 👍 👍
Our last tests were over 9megs download and 750kb upload. Sometimes it even reached 11megs download! I was just shocked to host that many people in GRAW 2 for the first time with no problems. :dopey: :dopey: The next time I am on I will try to host 16 people.
Current speed tests with repaired internet.
9megs download
750kb upload

Well looks like persistence finally paid off. Not only is my internet connection finally fixed, and we get a new modem for free, now Comcast is also giving me 4 months of their highest speed internet and cable tv for free as an apology for all the inconvenience. 👍

I don't know if you're smoking anything... but 17 megabit connections aren't BASIC packages. Lol.

Fastest connection in the area, AFAIK, is 10 megabit. I think we pay for a 5 mbit connection. My modem supposedly doesn't sync properly with InsightBB's servers so we're gonna go exchange it for something new for free.

i dont know too much about computers but more than the average person.

Is this good?
Below average, especially for the US.

If you click on "Global Stats" on top of the page, you'll see the averages for many countries.

Yeah below average is right. If you were playing GRAW 2 on the 360 you would only be able to host maybe 5 or 6 player rooms max. So if you host games and people get disconnected, now you will know why. Thats not a good enough connection to host some of the more demanding games. But if you call your internet provider you might be able to double that speed for only $10.00 more a month. (make sure your upload gets increased) That would at least get you around 700kb upload. The upload is the most important part for HOSTING.

Not neccessarily. Not all ISPs offer the same download/upload ratio. With one of my previous cable packages, they doubled the download speed, but the upload stayed the same.

The upload is the most important part for gaming.
Just to clarify that part, the upload is the most important part for hosting.

If there are 6 players online in the same game, the host is receiving (downloading) info from 5 players and sending (uploading) info to 5 others. Each of the players is receiving (downloading) info from 5 players, and sending (uploading) info from only 1 player, themselves.

Thanks for clearing that up. I updated the thread accordingly. Yes the upload is most important for hosting. And he is also right that they might only increase your download speed so keep an eye on that if you as for upgrades. You want your upload upgraded if your going to host.

just upgraded for $10.00 a month more

15mb download

1mb upload

when i run the test i get:

14232kb download
977kb upload

Congrats bro!!!! You shouldnt have any problems hosting any game now! That upload is very nice :) 👍

I have around 1100kb/s maximum download (cable company advertises 9mbit), and upload is around 60-70kb/s during the day and 120kb/s at night (so maximum 1mbit).

I used to host a server for like 6-8 people total in AvP2 and the original Call of Duty and some other games, but I dont do that anymore.

thanx bro, i really dont care if i host or not but we can try a 16 player defend and see how it works.

its funny how different tests give you way different results, this is one i ran today:

Well you will also help out other people when you join their rooms because your connection will be so good. It will be less stress on the host. Yeah we can try it out some time this week in GRAW 2. That game is a very good way to test your conneciton online.
As for the speed test the download will vary a lot depending on location but if you notice your upload will be quite consistant and thats the most important part for hosting.

Great hosting last night on GRAW2. Solid connection. I'm running a 3mb Cable connection, about a 468k upload and only had the game lag on me a couple times the entire night, most of which you were hosting 16 players. I'd say it's working out nicely!

The new DSL service is finally available in my area so I just upgraded to the "Up to 10mb" service, they say the upload is between 768-1024k. I guess we'll see on Monday when the modem arrives and the DSL gets activated. I will be saving about $20/mo over my current cable connection, so what the heck...save some money and upgrade the service...life is good.

Yeah I agree. It was a very late and fun night. Driftgod hosted lots of 16 player rooms successfully. 👍 👍 I was also glad we helped everyone get the Ultimate Defender achievement again.

Just got my DSL running. Notice the speed differences from what the DSL router reports vs. the speed test with a server 150 miles away:

Ive been having a little bit of trouble with my download speed.

Supposedly I have comcast roadrunner, and should have a 10-100mbs download speed according to my father. The thing is, on most speed tests, i hit an average of 3000-4000kbs

Is there anything thats stopping my download speed from reaching its full potential?
