I just watched Superman yesterday and had a good time. Not making it an origin story (again) is a good decision because we hit the ground running, and the action is almost non-stop. To me it felt very much aligned with the animated Superman movies/series, and the acting all around works, with Nicholas Hoult standing out as Luthor. That being said, it doesn't bring anything really new, thematically or visually, but I think it's a solid foundation for the new DC universe, we'll see. 8/10.

Watched a handful of movies last night/this morning. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Big Parade, They Made Me a Fugitive, and The Fugitive (1947). I haven't been keeping my Letterboxd up to date, but who needs Letterboxd when you can do this instead:

EDIT: 5 more - Man on the Brink, The Golem, Good Time, Way Down East, and Elevator to the Gallows.

Yesterday I watched the Fantastic Four: First Steps and it was just as fun as Superman, and now I can say that The Incredibles is not the best Fantastic Four movie out there (close second though).

The F1 movie was pretty entertaining. "Top Gun with cars" sounds about right.

Camera work is top notch. They capture the intensity of what a driver is going through on track really well. Brad Pitt sells it really well when he is constantly shifting focus between track marks and cars surrounding him.

The opening scene at Daytona might be my favorite race footage of the movie but the F1 race scenes are nice too.

Some dumb and unrealistic stuff is to be expected but it wasn't too bad. Insane speed differentials at the start overtaking 5 cars before the first corner was quite funny.

All the shenanigans of Pitt's character and the team was kind of over the top. But I can tolerate it for the sake of it being an action movie.

My friend who is not into cars and racing at all thoroughly enjoyed it. He also liked how they explain a lot to people like him which added to his enjoyment.

Overall definitely a movie for a casual fun movie night. But also some great footage for racing enthusiasts.

Watched The Revenant tonight and really enjoyed it. The cinematography is just stunning and it is one of the most beautifully shot (modern) movies I have ever seen. The acting was great as well, especially from Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. Fantastic movie!

What movies you seen lately?

Ive seen

~The Lion the Witch and Wardrobe
~Harry Potter 4 (liked number 3 better)
~King Kong(was really cool):) 👍
and gonna watch cheaper by the dozen soon- anyone seen it? wats it like?
Green book 10/10
Thor love and thunder 9.5/10
Green book was an absolute masterpiece
Thor love and thunder was a great movie but the ending could have been better

Yesterday I watched The Rescue (Nat Geo, on Disney+) about the 2018 rescue operation of the Thai children's football team stranded in the flooded Tham Luang caves. It was probably one of the finest ventures in the history of mankind. 10/10

And for nostalgia's sake, I also watched 1985's Ladyhawke (on Prime), a fantasy love film notable for its cast of Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Broderick, and Rutger Hauer. It's a fun film set on real, breathtaking locations in Italy, so it feels very grounded. It has a somewhat catchy synth score, but the movie actually improves during the second act when the score is sparsely used, and then it changes direction to a more orchestral style for the finale. 7.5/10

The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)

I've seen this twice already. That should tell you everything you need to know without me writing another word. The last time I saw another MCU movie multiple times was Infinity War and Endgame. I can't remember if I saw Multiverse of Madness more than once so we'll add an asterisk for that, which would make it the most recent movie but nevermind that — we're talking about The Fantastic Four.

Is this better than the first two non-MCU movies? Yes (RIP, Julian McMahon) and by a long shot too. First Steps has a ton of charm that's almost seeping out of the screen and getting into your eyeballs. Every one of the Fan 4 has chemistry with one another, there isn't a single moment that feels stilted or without nuance. This is perhaps the best MCU movie in a post-Thanos world simply because it legitimately feels like it could have been a Phase 2 or 3 insert. It feels that organic. I won't talk about any one thing as to no spoil stuff, but I wish Ben and Shalla were explored a little bit more but that's what future movies are for, right?

I cannot recommend seeing this enough. There's no misplaced humor and emotional or tense moments are allowed to play out and come to a natural conclusion without being stuffed with ill-timed humor for the sake of being humorous.

8/10. Can't wait for Avengers: Doomsday. The only reason this isn't higher is because I've weighed it against the likes of Winter Soldier, Infinity War, Endgame, Civil War, etc, etc. Those movies all having higher stakes and feel grander because the world and its characters are already established. Whereas with First Steps, you're literally taking your first steps with the Fan 4 and it's an incredible ride.

"What about the other Fantastic 4 movie, T?" I don't know what you're talking about. There is no other Fantastic 4 movie. Now, go see this.

I watched Reservoir Dogs for the first time in about 20 years (heck) last night and I appreciated it so much more this time around. I guess just having a stronger appreciation of what it means to trust someone made all the betrayals so much more impactful. I used to think Pulp Fiction was the better film but not anymore! Also the montage (if you can call it that) of Mr. Orange getting deeper into his role was amazing, such a good sequence. I still don't think his films live up to the hype but it's not hard to see why QT is so highly regarded considering that was his first feature film.

The acting was also all so good, like Harvey Keitel singing "I'm gonna be OKAAAAY" felt like something you'd do if you were panicking instead of a more Hollywood tough guy delivery, and Tim Roth totally sold his injury. Michael Madsen... He may have been a psychopath for real.

And, maybe best of all, it wasn't even 2 hours long! I think it's just over 100 minutes. Very efficient, effective storytelling, would be nice to get back to that. Not everything needs to be an epic.

Watched The Accountant. Caught me by surprise. I did have skepticism when it first came out. I don’t think I read reviews because I already cast it as another Reindeer Games or something. TB mentioning the second movie, figured I(and my wife) try the first. Good stuff!

I do not recommend the second one!

I caught it a couple of years back, when we still had Netflix and found it a perfectly acceptable film that was entertaining enough - if a little sketchy on the whole neurodiversity front (though the people who kicked off about the autistic guy loving guns somewhat missed the point about his dad basically doing that). I've been trying to get my wife to watch it since and I think we finally managed just before the sequel hit cinemas and managed to spoil the mild twist in the first one.

Of course we like John Bernthal so that helped get it over the line

Yep. Pretty much that. Still can’t get over the fact he’s not Fred Ward’s son. Anyway…
Plus, I always thought(for the past 18 years) my wife didn’t like Ben Affleck. Hence why I didn’t propose this movie and some of his others. She says, “Yeah I like Ben Affleck!”.
Me: :grumpy:

Just watched Audition. Wow, that was definitely a mind**** but I enjoyed it. It‘s a really well made arthouse horror movie.

I really liked how the director flipped the script on its head in the second half. Also the jumpscare involving the bag was genius.

I remember seeing this film during a Sneak Preview…. Totally of guard I was in shock as to what I have seen. In my opinion Miike Takeshi’s best movie. And the casting was just perfect. You really feel for the man.

Agreed, I knew it was supposed to be a horror movie but I definitely didn‘t expect that. Eihi Shiina and Ryo Ishibashi were fantastic too!

I you really want to enjoy “surprises” watch Dead or Alive or Gozu from the same director. You’ll don’t know what hit you. The cinematography in both movies is top notch.

I'll look into it, thanks! I can imagine it, I found Audition to be shot really well, especially things like the camera angles, perspectives and color composition.

I watched The Departed again last night - it still has a few question marks plot-wise for me, but it is largely believable, give or take a bit of suspension of disbelief.

I originally thought that Jack Nicholson was slightly overplaying his role, but I've grown to appreciate it more over the years - and there's really no-one better to convey a genuine sense of the unhinged maniac.

Leonardo DiCaprio steals the show for me though - his is a brilliant performance which makes Matt Damon look quite bad in comparison - which given the plot of the film is quite fitting.

Scorcese is really one of the great filmmakers of all time, and although this is no Goodfellas, it's the kind of film that is good enough to grow on you over time. I just can't believe it's been 19 years since I first saw it!

Went and watched the new Superman today. I used to love superhero comics as a kid. However I have never really gotten into the super hero and especially Marvel craze of the last 15 or so years. Other than Dark Knight movies and the new Batman they never really captivated me. Still thought I might give this one a try since reviews weren't terrible.

Well, … I have never left a cinema screening early. I have never gotten so close as I did today. This is a terrible movie.

The script and dialogue deserves a golden strawberry or whatever the anti Oscar is called. Tons of attempted jokes that totally flopped. A level of inhumanity displayed by some of the characters, especially Luthor, which is completely displaced. This is a family movie I guess (at least for teens) but the brutality of thought would be appropriate for a full on war movie like apocalypse now. Showing a literal baby going through completely traumatizing events for what felt like forever was just insanely bad taste in my opinion. I would never ever let a 12 year old watch this movie.

Everything in this movie was forced. Nothing flowed. Everything was unnecessarily over the top or contrived. Luthor could have been a believable modern day billionaire sociopath but he was just cartoonishly evil for no reason and also detrimental to his own ends. All this while rummaging about his genius. Grotesque.

I stop now. But I could go on and on about the terribleness of this movie.

There were only two redeeming qualities. An army of literal monkeys running Luthor's troll farm to smear Superman on social media was the only thing in this movie that was actually clever and funny.
And personally I was happy to see Wendell Pierce (Bunk in the Wire) as the newspaper boss even though his scenes were limited.

Oh and I hated the dog and how "funny" it was that a being that could literally kill billions of people if it wanted to was oh so funnily misbehaved and uncontrollable. Take it do dog school already.

Second movie by Takashi Miike I‘ve watched after Audition and I honestly wasn‘t too impressed. The first 20 minutes were interesting but the plot kinda lost me after that.

I‘ve seen many people calling it one of the most disturbing movies they‘ve ever seen but I found it more eccentric and weird than anything.

Watched Bad Guys 2 Tuesday night with a good friend of mine. Probably as good if not better than the first one, a lot of parts caught us off guard

Wednesday Season 2, part 2, Dan da Dan, Sakamoto Days (Netflix), and Alien Earth (through Disney+).

Edit: I just realized I meant to post this in the What are you watching thread... Anyways I watched the Space Battleship Yamato live action movie free on YouTube, and I had a fun time, as I have some recollection of watching the animated series here when I was younger (on a rerun must likely). 7.5/10
