Yes! It is known as Twilight Samurai when it was released abroad. The protagonist is played by Hiroyuki Sanada, better known as the kick-ass samurai in The Last Samurai.

Sanada plays a samurai whose wife has passed on and must take care of his senile mother and two daughters.

Does Sanada sparkle?

👍

I noticed that too, and the Exorcist II is also on the store - although it is apparently rubbish. I really like The Exorcist, and I still rate it in my Top 10 of all time, despite the fact that it is a little dated. The Director's Commentary on the special edition DVD is well worth listening to, it explains certain parts of the film that are otherwise quite easily over-looked. (It also makes the film more watchable if you are watching it alone :dopey: )

I was going to rent it from the PSN store but found out there was a directors cut so got that on DVD instead, I've heard Exorcist II is pretty dire too so doubt I'll be watching that!

I think the DVD is about 10 years old, it's quite amusing how limited the extras are on it. I'll have to try it again with the commentary, I don't normally bother with commentaries but I'll give it a go as I'll definitely be watching again...by the way is it more watchable on your own with commentary because it's less scary :dopey:

Good film 👍

"Your mother cooks socks in hell!!!!"

The language in it is class. I'd heard most of them before but it doesn't take any of the impact away from it. I've lent it to my mum...I did tell her it was pretty shocking but I think she'll still be unimpressed!
Omen is next on my list of classics I've never seen.

I must've gotten another version.. I don't remember that line

Just replace the "cooks socks" with something more imaginitive, that a demon would say and voila! you have your film quote! ;) Or am I missing some sarcasm here again and you do know what he means?

Good Luck Chuck (Mark Helfrich, 2007) -- Where to begin? Chuck (thought they never call him Chuck in the movie, go figure) is living every bachelor's dream; women throw themselves at him because whoever he sleeps with finds Mr. Right relatively quickly. Imagine his predicament when he encounters the woman of his dreams. Unfortunately, the woman of his dreams can't act and is the only "major" name in this movie, which further proves people will swim in [crap] if you throw a few shillings in it.

The plot is paper thin, acting is below average by all the players and the humour is just immensely sophomoric. Though it's aimed at a younger audience the amount of T&A + F-words is simply stunning. Also, there's a collage of sex scenes which really makes you wonder what the producers were aiming for. 4.5/10

I take it you are unfamiliar with Dane Cook? He is a foul mouthed stand up who made his way into movies. I gave him one chance with Employee of the Month.

Ya, never heard of him before. He seemed to me something like a 4th choice actor who didn't really have the appeal to play a lead role in a romantic movie... even one as lewd as this one.

I think that for a bit he is the new lewd comedy star, filling in the void left by Ryan Reynolds when he decided to try serious and action. Dane Cook is big enough in the US that Comedy Central gives him specials and begins advertising them months in advance. I will honestly be surprised if he doesn't get a few more starring roles in bad comedies. Actually, yep.

Looking at his list of movie credits I have seen three of his films, two that he starred in (the fact that I forgot some should say something). He had a bit part in Waiting, with Ryan Reynolds (shock), and then I have seen Employee of the Month and My Best Friend's Girl. Oddly enough Dane Cook acts just like...Dane Cook.

"The Adventures of Pinocchio"

Not the 1940 Walt Disney movie. I can't find this movie on IMDB. From the looks of it it appears to have been made sometime from the 60s-70s.

Anyways it sticks to the original book unlike the Disney version which tones way down the situations Pinocchio gets in. I also like it much better then the Disney version. For instance Pinocchio was rebellious, mischivious and hateful from the get go while in the Disney version he was kissing all over Gepetto from the get go.

Not even 15 minutes into the movie Pinocchio has his father thrown in jail, he kills Gimeney Cricket, he burns his feet off, and he sales the spelling book his father sold the jacket off his back to get for him for just 4 pennies. And all this is true to the original book.

El Secreto de Sus Ojos (a.k.a. The Secret in Their Eyes) (Juan José Campanella, 2009) -- When I put this one in tonight and saw the first 2 minutes I thought to myself this was another Argentinean movie with Ricardo Darín (who is in every movie that comes from Agrentina)... this one was no exception, but that's where the shortcomings ended.

The story, set in 1999, is told in flashback form: in June 1974 a federal justice agent becomes spellbound by and subsequently entangled in the investigation of the crime of a young woman, brutally raped and murdered inside her house in a Buenos Aires neighbourhood. What follows is a movie about police investigation, legal loopholes and ultimate revenge that kept me glued to the screen in every surprising plot twist.

Now, one thing I dislike about Latin American movies that take on genres they don't usually work with is that they tend to be predictable and only good when compared to movies within their market... but this one is different. The plot and the story rival any Hollywood blockbuster and it also has very convincing and thought out acting, amazing cinematography and maybe the only problem with it (aside from the casting of Darín, which is really a personal thing) is that there's a few flashbacks that lost me completely.

In any case, if you're wondering if foreign cinema is for you and you're not sure where to start: watch this one! 10/10

Se7en 1995 (Freeman, Pitt)

A movie about a crazy serial killer who kills his victims according to the 7 deadly sins. It's a very dark, dark movie. It's disturbing, but incredible.

drag-me-to-hell-horror-movie-poster.jpg

Drag me to Hell (Sam Raimi, 2009) -- Having liked the Evil Dead series, I thought Raimi re-venturing into the horror genre would be a good thing, especially since Evil Dead was charged with funny-ish moments. If you haven't heard of this one, it's about a loan officer ordered to evict an old woman from her home and finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse, which turns her life into a living hell. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point. And it just falls short of being anything but a completely predictable and pathetic attempt at horror. One of the things I liked the least about this movie is that the dialogues are at -5 volume, but the horror parts are at +12, so I constantly had to turn it up or down... which basically turned into a constant scared-by-volume movie. Not recommended at all, unless you want to waste your money, which would be better used y donating it or something. 4.5/10

Could this be it?

Wow yeah thats it. I remember seeing it when I was a child but recently my brother found it on amazon and bought it for a few dollars on DVD. When we got the disc it had scratches on it and was nothing but a VHS recording burned onto a DVD.

Nethertheless the film played so we did not complain as it was only just a few dollars

I'm guessing you've seen it as well? I think this version is way better then the Disney version.

As a matter of fact, I'm in the middle of watching that.

I won't lie, I've only watched it a few times for Alba herself just because it's one of 2 movies she actually looked attractive in. Of course, that'll probably change when "The Killer Inside Me" comes out.

*Abnormally huge pic of Groundhog Day*

Last night on TV Land

They're showing Groundhog Day in Spanish now?

Let me guess, the other one is Into the Blue?

I just watched:

Александра (a.k.a. Aleksandra) (Aleksandr Sokurov, 2007) -- An elderly woman takes a train trip to visit her grandson at his army camp inside Chechnya. It's a very observational film on the conditions of Russian soldiers in Chechnya and the conditions of the Chechns. Though sometimes the relationships between the characters and Aleksandra seem odd, it's mostly due to soldiers not being very communicational people and not knowing what to say... at leats in this movie. In all the movie is subtly anti-war, but rarely does it venture into saying what is good and what is not. I also points out the fact that most soldiers in any army are little more than armed kids. It's a very good story which is probably very hard to find but leaves little to think about and it's probably why it doesn't score high for me 6.5/10

I FFWD through a few stupid movies yesterday. All very bad. They were Freddy Got Fingered -1/10, The Day The Earth Stood Still - 3/10 (2008 piece of crap and not the original) and 12 Rounds - 2/20 with some wrestler dude from the late '90s.

I gave TDTESS higher than 1 point for some of the effects and GORT was still bad-ass.
