Echoing what others say about Inception. Best film I have ever seen, and I've seen Fight Club, Shawshank, Goodfellas etc.
 
Wow, I never heard of this movie before and now I really want to watch it.
 
Oh I also saw Get Him To The Greek the other day. Brand convincingly plays Aldous (not far from Brand himself) and it gives about a million laughs. Feel good, well worth seeing.

It's by Christopher Nolan, and according to IMDb you're getting it on August 6th, while I get it a week later
 
Just saw "The Book of Eli" and it was kinda sorta what I expected and kinda not. I figured the book Washington was protecting was the Bible, but I didn't expect the deepness of the movie. It wasn't that bad, really. Had some awesome action scenes, and kinda gave a "if you destroy the bible, you destroy the world" warning, but it was still pretty good.
 
I thought Book of Eli was alright, but there's some details about it you might want to use spoiler tags with in the future.



Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (John Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, 2008) -- More of the same fun that make Harold & Kumar movies so great, though this one is definitely not a stoner movie. It's more or less the same as the first one, but everyting is more exaggerated, which doesn't mean it's funnier. There's fewer laugh out loud scenes and a lot more disturbing/disgusting/lewd parts. Definitely not what I wanted, but again, nothing unexpected. And while the first one's title was about White Castle, the guys spent all movie talking about going to White castle, so it was a recurring theme. This movie deals with Guantanamo Bay in the first 20 minutes and then it's anything else. Leave your logic at the door again. 6.5/10



Control (Anton Corbijn, 2007) -- A profile of Ian Curtis, the enigmatic singer of Joy Division whose personal, professional, and romantic troubles led him to commit suicide at the age of 23. And as a biographical movie of a rockstar it is indeed a great movie, but it follows along the same, well-traveled path of rockstars and/or (almost) famous people: I'm drunk, I'm no one; I'm drunk, I'm famous; I'm drunk, I'm dead. So, while acting is excellent, the cinematography is great and the soundtrack is very good, it's yet another biographical movie of zero-to-hero-to-death, which is frankly, overdone. 7.5/10

Watched it last night on TV. It's a thoroughly thrilling movie and it's very interesting. Revenge storylines always sell the movie for me (it's why I love Inglourious Basterds and Kill Bill) and seeing as it was (sort of) based on a true story, that just made me think that I had to watch it.
I just wished they shown the most important target, Ali Hassan Salameh, being killed. That sort of spoils it for me.
A few mistakes here and there cost it top marks, but I'll give it 8/10.

Since I play a lot of video games as well, I thought this one would be funny to watch... Being a Happy Madison production you see a lot of the actors known from Adam Sandler movies makes apperances in this movie. In the end its a hardcore stoner movie and its funny at times, but also kind of boring at others.... I think it wouldve been funnier if I smoked a huge spliff before hand.. :p

Män som hatar kvinnor The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – English title (2009)

This is the first movie of the Millennium trilogy books written by the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson. I’ve read the first book in the series which is excellent and the film definitely does it justice even though it omits quite a bit in order to keep the film to a reasonable length. Nothing that is left out detracts from the main story and may have interrupted the flow of the movie.

Set in Sweden it centres on journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander as they try to solve the 30 year old disappearance and likely murder of the niece of industrialist Henrik Vanger. Vanger’s family are the main suspects and are an unpleasant bunch to say the least which Blomkvist finds out first hand. The real gem in the movie is the Salander character (revealed to have a behavioral disorder in the book) who is under the control on a sadistic guardian/parole officer. She appears to be a diminutive outcast cyberpunk that lives in the underworld but turns out to be a very strong and hot headed woman that can more than stand up for herself which is shown in quite graphic but not gratuitous style. Without the great characters I guess it could just be another generic crime thriller but I found it paced fast enough to keep me gripped. The cinematography, beautiful Swedish scenery and score add up to make this a pretty stunning spectacle which I would definitely give a second watch – 8.5/10



An American remake of the first is rumoured for 2012 directed by David Fincher possibly Daniel Craig and Carey Mulligan, I think the story could translate quite well to a remake but it does seem unnecessary although I may still see it. The Swedish sequel “The Girl Who Played with Fire” is due out in the UK on 27th August 2010 which I’m really looking forward to so will need to read the book pronto.

Finally decided to give this movie a chance. First time I watched the movie I shut it off after 25 minutes. So last night I finished the movie. Still quite terrible but there were a couple good parts. Especially the pig launching part. Got a good laugh out of that.

Paranormal Activity
This actually ended up better than I expected. A couple parts made me jump big time. Especially with the surround sound cranked up.

Land of the Lost (2009)

It's based of a TV series I've never seen so I had no idea what to expect. The story isn't good, nor is the acting and special effects. There were also some parts that felt like they were ripping off "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". There really isn't anything remotely good about this film. 1/10

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)

As with the first one the film focuses more on awesome visuals than having a good story line and acting, unfortunately it's even worse than the first film. It felt like there was a good 30 minutes of crap that could have been cut as it was just unnecessary and didn't move the story anywhere. There is only one good thing about this movie and that is the fighting scenes which are spectacular, although the final battle between the bosses(best title I can come up with without spoiling) was rather short. 6/10 (purely for the special effects)
 
Wow, I used to watch Land of the Lost as a child. Never knew there was a movie about it.

I also grew up with The land of the lost. The Land of the lost movie above with Will Ferrell is terrible. 0/10 👎

Pretty much, that was the last movie with him in it that I had any interest in, even than I just wanted to see if it was as bad as people said it was. Thankfully he is not in any of the movies in my queue.
 


The Killers (Robert Siodmak, 1946) -- The story of a murder of an unresisting victim and the investigation done by the insurance agent, which uncovers a web of deceit, violence and sex, starring Burt Lancaster and an amazing looking Ava Gardner, both of which were in their first starring roles. The movie is told in many flashbacks about the character's life and at times it seems a bit confusing, but it's an awesome piece of film noir filmdom. There's also a great amount of film noir lighting firsts (or starts) and they work perfectly to create the mood, as well as a few long tracking shots that were just something completely unheard of at the time. There's also a couple of shooting scenes that are just a textbook blend of all the movies are supposed to be about, great acting, camera movement that means something, and brilliantly layered music. Great movie 9/10



The Dam Busters (Michael Anderson, 1955) -- One of the better British war movies, it's the true story of how the Brits attacked the German dams in WW2 by using an ingenious technique to drop the bombs where they would be most effective. The movie never stops being entertaining nor interesting, especially because though it's a movie about the pilots and their lives withing the RAF leading to this event, it's also about the planning and testing of different materials and altitudes to drop the bombs and the people involved in all the steps up to the actual attack. The special effects are both very bad (obvious scale models) and very realistic in the parts of the planes flying at low altitude (well, it's actual footage) and the ending is entirely predictable, but it's a very well done war movie that doesn't pretend or try to be something else. Please don't be offended if you're black when watching it. 7.5/10
 
Pirate Radio/ The Boat that Rocked

Ehh.... decent I guess. It could have been so much more, but I found it was one of those movies with just a few too many heart-warming moments, and silly over the top things. I just found it too heart-warming, and too "righteous", to the point where it makes you sick. I was disappointed with it, because it starts out meh, becomes good, regresses back to meh, and then falls hard in the final bit of the film (too righteous & heartwarming). All in all, a movie ruined by trying to tug at your heart strings too many times, to the point where you lose interest.

4/10


Note: I don't have a problem with heart-warming, "righteous", or epic moments, but there were just too damn many of them in this movie. I also recently found out that the "Pirate Radio" version, released in North America, was cut by almost 20 minutes, and dumbed down for American and Canadian audiences. Perhaps these 20 minutes change the film enough to warrant a different rating.

I agree Land of the Lost was terrible... But Old School and Anchorman werent that bad, were they? I think those were his better movies, and also Stranger than Fiction... for the rest its either "meh" or crap...

Step Brothers was my favorite movie with Will Ferrell. One of the most funny movies I have watched in a long time. Other than that, he is indeed a really bad actor.
 
^^^ And that one yes... I forgot about that one... I think I prefer that one over Old School even...

Gotta side with the mob here, Neal. The only thing that he has has been in that has really made me laugh was the needsmorecowbell skit and that wasn't even because he was in it. Anyone could have replaced him and it would still be just as good.

Nonetheless, you are completely entitled to your opinion. Twould get pretty boring real quick in here if everyone agreed on every movie every time. :)

Jackie Brown (1997)

First off, Netflix really mis-categorized this movie as it's more a drama or dark comedy than an action film. Anyways, the movie is about a flight attendant that smuggles money for a weapons dealer and after she gets caught she basically becomes a double agent. It's rather well done with great acting and a solid storyline. It takes awhile before the story really gets interesting but it's still rather good up to that point. 8/10

Side Note: De Niro looks horrible in a mustache. :yuck:
 
I saw the infamous The Room last night, the first time it's been shown in NZ in an actual cinema.
Just as hilarious as the first time I saw it, you wouldn't think that a film could actually be made more entertaining by people yelling at the screen and hurling spoons but clearly you have yet to see The Room.

Anyone else seen it? So dreadful, and yet so amazing.

I enjoyed this too but the vast majority of people I've discussed it with don't rate it highly at all. There are a lot of great characters in it and it's a great "slow burner" story. One of Tarantino's better films before he got so far up his own arse he couldm't see daylight!

Until Inglorious Basterds came out, I considered Jackie Brown to be Tarantino's best movie, if anything because it wasn't as 'tributary to the b-movie genre' as other movies by him and because at no time it tried to be something it's not. Jackie Brown is one of those hidden treasure movies that get better and better.

I've got it yet I still haven't seen it (hang head in shame smilie) but I'll pull my finger out and watch it soon after that recommendation 👍
