I searched the forum for a while and couldn't find something similar so here we go - a new mini game where reasonable and down-to-earth decisions are of huge importance.

There are three roles playing the game - Host, Judge and Rival.

HOST - Each week the host announces new conditions which Rivals have to follow when deciding what car they would buy if they had an opportunity and the budget listed within the conditions. Usual format the host should submit should look like this:

Budget:
Family:
Expected Driving Routine
City Driving:
Off-Road Driving:
Sports Driving:

Under Budget you have to select amount of money others can spend on their car. Currency can be set in British Pound, European Euro or American Dollar (e.g. Budget: 10,000 $).

Under Family list number of children you have, whether you're married or single and how many parents you have (e.g. Family: 3 children, wife, 1 parent).

Under Expected Driving Routine distribute Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Yearly to each driving condition: City, Off-Road Driving and Sports Driving. Under Off-Road Driving you can also designate type of terrain you may drive on (Light, Medium, Heavy, etc.). Under Sports Driving you can designate how and where would you race (Circuit, Drag, Public Roads, etc.)

Of course, the Host can add more entries or expand current ones. The more detailed the conditions are, the easier the job for the Judge and Rivals will be.

Before the week is complete, the Host must select a GTP member who will play the Judge role for that week. The Judge then inspects all the submissions and proclaims a winner. The winner is the host for the next round.

The Host must not be the Judge, but can post as Rival.

JUDGE

He gets selected by the host of a current week. His job is to examine all submissions and pick the best one from rational and down-to-earth viewpoint. Age is not important, but to be on safe side the Host should aim for senior members.

The Judge cannot play as Rival or Host.

RIVAL

Rivals are all members posting their own car choices to match Host's conditions. To participate simply quote the conditions set by Host and submit a photo of a car of your choice, along with the full name of the car, its engine level and overall power. It is recommended that you submit price of the car, drivetrain and mileage as well. This can all help the Judge do his job properly.

Use internet sale adds, brochures, car magazines from your local stores... everything that you would use if you had to buy a car on your own.

Rival cannot play as judge, but may appear as Host.

Okay, I'll be the host for the first week:

WEEK 1
Budget: 10,000 $
Family: 3 children, wife
Expected Driving Routine
City Driving: Daily
Off-Road Driving: Weekly (Light terrain, mostly macadam)
Sports Driving: Monthly (Local uphill course, sharp turns)

Weekly Results
WEEK 1 Conditions
Budget: 10,000 $
Family: 3 children, wife
City Driving: Daily
Off-Road Driving: Weekly (Light terrain, mostly macadam)
Sports Driving: Monthly (Local uphill course, sharp turns)

Judge: @AudiMan2011

Winner: @Joey D
2006 Volvo V70R, $8,995 130,894 miles, AWD, 6-Speed automatic, 296hp, 300lb.ft., 2.5L I5 Turbo. With the remaining $1,000 going towards a set of winter tires and steel wheels.

The Volvo is sporty, roomy enough for a family, has excellent safety, has AWD for dirt roads/snow, and with it being newer than 2005 it will be more reliable too since the the issues with AWD were worked out for the 2006 model year.
WEEK 2 Conditions
Budget: $35,000 USD (about £25,000 or $49,000 AUD)
Family: Married, no children, 1 dog
Expected Driving Routine
City Driving: Daily as the family lives in a condo in a downtown metropolis, works 20 miles from home
Off-Road Driving: Weekly (Trails, mud, deep ruts, some watercrossing)
Sports Driving: Rarely, a bit of slow fun on sweeping mountain roads

Additional Info: Uses the vehicle to go camping in mountainous areas and brings the wife and the dog with them. Height of vehicle is of some concern as the driver works in an office building and needs to be able to park in a parking structure. The weather is sunny and warm with occasional rain, it does not snow.

Judge: @Murcie_LP640

Winner: @Legro
2005 Land Rover Range Rover Vogue 4.4, 138,000 km, 26,000€ ($29,000)

4.4 petrol V8 (302 bhp)

Hmm. Seems like an exciting idea. I could spend some time searching used cars online.

From my local craigslist:

2004 Land Rover Discovery
4.6L V8, 217hp.
Used, 120k miles, $8500. Tried to balance "off-road" and "Sporty driving" the best I can. Depending on the city, though, it might be a problem w/size. And gas. (But gas prices are dropping, so....)

Potential cars I'd buy.

2007-2010 Dodge Grand Caravan ($6000-8000)
2004-2008 Chrysler Pacifica ($5000-8000)
1997-2003 Dodge Durango R/T ($2500-4500
2007-2009 Chrysler Aspen- ($8000-10000)
And of course, the 1987 Dodge Aries K Station Wagon (Below 1,000)

@FerrariF1GT @DCybertron - Your detailed submissions encouraged me to alter the rules a bit and edit conditions for the first week. 👍 Nothing special, but you may want to read the conditions again and replace your choices if required. I apologize for inconvenience.

The good thing is that the challenge is now ready for submissions. :)

Potential cars I'd buy.

You can only choose one car. Quote the conditions for this week and submit a photo of your choice, along with basics specs of the car you think are important. :)

And here is the choice of mine:

WEEK 1
Budget: 10,000 $
Family: 3 children, wife

City Driving: Daily
Off-Road Driving: Weekly (Light terrain, mostly macadam)
Sports Driving: Monthly (Local uphill course, sharp turns)

2008 Renault Scenic Conquest 1.9 dCi (96 kW, 86,370 miles, 8,765 $, FWD)

I would use remaining money on gas and better tires when going for an uphill sprint driving.

I think far more of a potential problem than gas prices with a used, Rover V8-engined Land Rover would be "everything mechanical and electrical"

Your entry is not going to be valid if you don't post the photo below quoted conditions for this week. And while you're doing that, you should also state engine level of the car and if possible, price and mileage of the car.

Check posts above to see how other members did it.

@Fastcarguy Could you just edit your submission once again and add appropriate units for price and power of the car? I'm not sure if you're alluding to dollars for price and kW for power or something else.

Anyway, we have four entries at the moment. Keep them coming. :)

By answering to Award Question posted on my status bar before anyone else, @AudiMan2011 earned the Judge title for the first round of our game. Nice! :)

@AudiMan2011 , would you carefully examine all submissions listed below in the spoiler and pick one that you think is the most rational, down-to-earth choice, considering conditions we set for this week?

Simply tag the member who in your opinion did the best purchase. The winner can automatically start hosting the next round. Remember, Host can alter or expand conditions format listed in the OP, set some limitations, etc. Good Luck to all!

After giving it a lot of thought, the winner for Week 1 is @Joey D.

It was very close between the Legacy, S4 Avant and the V70R, but the Volvo wins because to me, it is the best combination of all the criteria; The 296hp is more than enough for sports driving, AWD for handling all weather conditions, a 6 speed auto and a big trunk will make for a comfortable and safe daily driver.

So @Joey D is the first winner.

I now noticed that 'Spoiler' option covered some information that were attached to each submission. I apologize, I hope that didn't affect @AudiMan2011 's judgement. :ouch: I used Spoiler option to make the thread more practical, but now it seems that quoting is the best thing to do it. Previous post fixed.

Thank you @AudiMan2011 for solving the first round! :)

I'll be honest, while I like the idea of being given a budget and a set of requirements, I don't like being told how I would use the car. If the rules were changed so that instead of explicitly saying how you would use the car a set of circumstances were given (your teenage son is an apprentice at a large construction site and you have to drive him there each week) it would be much more realistic and seem far less forced.

Why would it be forced? As far as I'm informed, that is exactly how average senior buyers think before commencing with the purchase. You have to consider car's utility, your own needs and financial wealth. :)

Nevertheless, the Host of each round gets to choose how to alter the conditions within the proposed format, so everything is possible.

Well, in this scenario the judge is telling the buyer how he/she would specifically use the car. Giving a set of circumstances is more forgiving, because it then allows the buyer to make the choice of how to fulfill each of those needs.

So I'm going to do a bit of a personal scenario here...

WEEK 2

Cutting it real close on this one.
2016 Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler W,
3.6L V6 with a 6 speed manual
285 HP, 260 lb.ft of torque
Enough room for wife and dog, as well as camping gear, low enough for a parking garage, and its short so its good for a city and tight trails. Capable of crossing up to 30 inches of water with 10 inches of ground clearance
Some optional extras: trailering package and tube steps.
Building this on the Jeep website brought it up to $32,180 USD. I would spend the remaining $2,820 on some proper tires and a brush bar with some lights up front for offroading, and any other offroad goodies I can afford after that.

2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.5 V6 4x4 ($7,888 - 122,498 km - manual trans. - 116 kW)

cd5372316056118306091.jpg

Given the daily and off-road conditions set for this week, I wanted to pick a diesel Vitara. Sadly, I couldn't find anything that wasn't suspiciously cheap or overloaded with mileage, so I decided to buy an used V6 model. It comes with roof rails as standard and big trunk. The rear seats can be folded to make a flat surface, which is suitable for dog transport or/and additional camping tools.

I would use the remaining budget to buy mud tires and, if it is not already installed, all-weather floor mat. It would still leave me enough founds to cover for the fuel consumption.

I have seen this generation Vitara models with around 300,000 km, so I think this one would last very long.

@Legro You may want to quote this week's conditions to make your entry eligible. Still, it is up to the Host do decide. :)

I updated the OP with result from the previous round.

Cheers @Joey D. It's a tough choice between the Forester and the Range Rover in my opinion - however for the off-road terrain advised and the fact that it's just as accomplished on the road as it is off, I'd pick @Legro 's Rangie, on the proviso that it has a full service history ;)

The Forester is great off-road in comparison of its soft-roader competitors, but it is compromised compared to some of the other more established off-road vehicles on offer.

Honourable mention is the Grand Vitara, which has the off-road capability down to a tee but is a little cumbersome on the road.
