GT 5 has gotten the feel and physics of driving down to a science .. OK we already know that they got that part of it.

**But how else have they pushed the racing/car boundaries ?**

1.other racers already have rain.. (day/night is cool)

2.other racers already have online mods **some may argue better, or better attempts**

3.Other racers have customization **some may argue better**

So How exactly the "leader" or original sim racer pushed the racing genre ?

What does GT5 have that others can not implement...
What does GT5 Do that others racer can't do.

Back to my original point How has PD raised the stakes for others with GT5?

My opinion : I can't see any developers worrying about the GT franchise as a threat.

so list the real innovations that you think they have made with GT5 only, that has change the racing genre. Or are they falling behind in features that other racing dev have done or at least attempted to do? :

You don't need to be innovative to be a threat, but that's not the point.
I've never seen anything like B-spec before so that's one thing. I know people who will buy it just for B-spec, it brings in a whole new crowd of people who love cars, but don't like be the one doing the racing.
Most of GT5's features have existed in one way or another before, but they've never all been in a single game until now. And being able to combine so many different features so well is why GT5 is innovative IMO.

What a rediculous thread. Innovations? There really hasn't been that many since the first racing games in the 70s and 80s.
The main things that have been pushing the racing game genre on are advances in graphics and physics simulations. Racing games don't really change up much, weather, night racing, tyre wear, fuel wear, tuning, etc have been around for years.
Let's turn the question around, what was innovative about Forza 3? F1 2010?

What sets GT5 (and the GT series) apart from other racing games? The crucial part is the "feel", how the physics feel, how the cars look, etc.

might be off topic but this is something ive noticed on how GT games add things
GT2 added rally
GT3 added rain in 1 track.
GT4 added LMP and b-spec and snow
GT5 added nascar/oval

Absolutely nothing, which in retrospect, when you think of it is quiet pathetic of Polyphony.... or shall I say Polyphaily?

Then again when was the last time a 5th iteration of anything was inovative?

uh.... Being able to Export high res photos easily?

uh.................
...
:dunce:

you're right there is nothing innovative about gt5.. however there is no other game that captures the feel and look about the automobile quite like this one. you can tell that this game was made by people who truly appreciate the awesomeness that is cars and honestly i can't see this feeling in any other racing game

Bringing them altogether is not innovative nor is throwing on 1 new feature to the mix.

The B-Spec feature is quite neat itself & how it works, but the idea to let the AI race for you has been done before.

Personally, I don't think there are many games that can truly be called innovative anymore; a lot of the ideas that people want have been done. It's just a matter of who can now bring all those ideas together & for now, GT5 at least does a solid job.

There is a limit to innovation for any game genre that attempts to simulate a aspect of real life.

Look at flight sims, asides from prettier graphics each year there is simply nothing left to add. The hardcore war sims are the same, the only feature they are missing is a random SAS guy smashing through the players window and double tapping him if he dies ingame.

Nothing truly innovative really. GT is like pokemon... you get another one and with little exception, it's more of what you had before. If you love it, you still love it, if you hated it before... probably not much going to change now.

One needs only to look back at Test Drive Leman on Dreamcast to see how much we haven't innovated outside graphics. 24 cars on track, real 24 hour race at Leman with day night change and changing weather.

The things I have felt revolutionized racing games are:

Switch from vector graphics t bitmaps
Switch from sprites to 3D polys
Force Feedback
Advanced tuning options
Online/multiplayer
Built in user customization/editors

Short of that there are constant improvements but very little in terms of revolution.

One of the things innovative about GT5 over other today's console racing games, it doesn't have a rewind feature in SP. Grid, Dirt 1&2 and worst Forza 3 all has rewind. Even f1 2010 has rewind. This proves it is possible to have a console sim without a "easy" button/rewind.

For me, when it comes to GT5 and being innovative....It's the "Authenticity" of the game. The elevation changes in the tracks, the subtle small details in the accuracy of the tracks compared to what they are in the real world is what I love about GT5. Other games attempt to create real world tracks, but they more or less look like a computer generation of what they THINK the track feels/looks like because they watched some videos or looked at photos.

The Nur in GT5 is created from actual experience of being on the track. If other dev's actually sent personnel to the track to get actual data, then they must suck at conveying that into their game as it's no where near having the same accuracy that GT brings. How many other Genre of games are there, where the actual face behind the game competes in real world Motorsports like the 24hrs at the Nur or something?

There are other games out there which already feature GT5's 'innovations' so on the face of it, you might say 'what does GT5 bring to the table that is new'? Well while other racing games might have some of this and non of that, GT5 seems to have some of just about everything, so in that respect, its innovation is bring all the many aspects that are found in isolation in other games and making them all work together.

It's not the only game with dynamic weather
It's not the only game with hundreds of cars
It's not the only game with depth of tracks
It's not the only game with detailed physics
It's not the only game with a comprehensive online mode
It's not the only game with great graphics.

Yet its the only game with all of these. Which is perhaps why its one of the best racers money can buy.

Stevisiov,

Define Comprehensive online mode and depth of tracks.

Thanks

The rest is spot on : )

Perhaps GT5 brings the "threat of innovation" to the other franchises and in doing so helps the others raise their game?

Can't think of any "sim" conslole racers with a course creator.

You just know it'll crop up in FM4 and I have a suspicion it'll be added to Shift 2, too.

Stevisiov,

Well lets be honest, it has a good 30 courses, with a decent amount of variation add to that the ability to make your own tracks, and well I would describe that as sufficient depth, particularly in relation to other racing games.

Comprehensive is perhaps a bit less known currently. But the ability to make your own private lobbies with your own rules to me is surprisingly absent from many on-line games. I'm just comparing to other main-steam titles such as F1 2010, Forza, Dirt 2. Obviously its not comprehensive relative to say i-racing, which is easily the most developed on-line experience that can be found in the sim world. Of course others like r-factor and the likes are pretty advanced down that line too.

I personally don't think being innovative is the point or really matters much at all.

Gt5 does the same things as other sims but better and more. Its the passion and craftsmanship that makes the difference. Sorta like hand built swiss watch vs a cheap timex, they both do the same thing but for those that can truly appreciate the little details it makes all the difference. And for the people that can't there's really no point in even trying to explain the difference. :)

On a side note I have to disagree about the physics, I've driven and tracked a lot of different cars at the limit and to me GT5's oversteer physics are definitely wrong.

Absolutely nothing. But as others have said, innovation is not necessarily needed to make a game good, and certainly not with a genre simulating a real life sport/activity that hasn't really changed all that much in a century or more, aside from better cars and safer tracks.

These are my answers. I can't improve on their posts, except to add that Gran Turismo games exude an atmosphere that other games don't or can't. Forza is similar, but then it is similar, though with it's own flavor.

And frankly, the only innovations I'm aware of which are truly unique, cool and forward thinking are:

  • Forza 1's drivatar and Gran Turismo's B-Spec Bob
  • Forza's Livery Editor
  • The track creators in ModNation Racers (not a sim, but STILL!) and GT5
  • Gran Turismo's Photo Mode
  • Edit: GT TV

Nothing is innovative. The whole game is a huge letdown for me. Waited all this time, bought a PS3 at launch, everything....to be shafted with a crappy game.

Haha, I love how even now, people tend to refer to him as B-Spec Bob. :D

As long as it's gran turismo, i don't care, just the feel of gt keeps me coming back. I especially love driving an sls amg around the ring. Such good fun. :D

GT1 was innovative FOR ME, because of the RPG "feel" but some guy says me that other game has that RPG part but i dont recall rigth now(i think it was Enthusia)

I am one of the 'there didn't need to be anything innovative about GT5' crowd. If I was worried about big new features I would not have bought GT2 let alone 3 and 4 or 5P. They all do the same thing just each one does it a bit better.

for me it's the details.

No one as PD can capture beauty of cars.
No one as PD can create vast amount of cars from Demio to R8
No one as PD care about menus (GT5 Menus are astonishing beautiful)
No one as PD can create for their game VOD - GT-TV
No one as PD can care about 50 diffrent types od skylines or miatas. (It's a big plus !)
No one as PD can give you some veeeeery rare cars to play like Miura Bertone or old Jaaag.
No one as PD can do some actuall things in car world like Citroen by GT, X1 Prototype, GT-R multidisplay etc.
No one as PD can make you real life racer (Luka Ordonez), even if it's PR stunt it still count
No one as PD can put you in your Honda City Turbo II with dirt tyres on Toscania Gravel.
No one as PD can create vast amount of cars and still their game is considered simulation.
No one as PD can give you fantastic Photomode.
No one give damn about Photomode places. But they DO !
No one as PD can give you virtual museum.
No one as PD can give you proper descriptions of cars with so much passionn :D

I love the most PD for their love for cars. Thanks to them

Can i still go on ?

Please people consider all parts of GT5 or GT series. Yeah other games have some things but not at this scale project. It's easy to create night and day or rain snow etc superrealistic physic, damage if you have 30 cars and 5-6 tracks but for this scale of project everything is hard.

I still didn't see any gliitch or bug. This scale with no bugs ? ...

No...theres a design studio which made a far better render of Koenigsegg than Polyphony have rendered ANY car

Yes...but do we really want to drive such ****boxes as the dreaded Demio or the 328957423985789375498543878 Civics? (yes thats a hyperbole)

Menus that are disfunctional, confusing eye-sores?

Yes... thats the ONLY innovation in GT.

Yes... but having 50 odd versions of the same car is totally pointless, its like NFS including the Porsche Carrera S when they already have the Turbo.

No not really... theres countless games that do, theres TONNES of user generated stuff on things like Rfactor and iRacing.

Yes... but needless crap like that is probably what distracted them from making a COMPLETE game.

Really?... so you haven't heard of Norbert Michelisz? He was discovered on sim racers 4 years ago and won the 2nd WTCC race at Macau.

Yes... but why on earth would you want to rally with THAT car?!! It's like wanting to do a go-kart race with a monster truck.

Yes thats a genuine plus with GT.

Yes thats another genuine plus.

Yes... but no comment lol.

Erm... virtual museum? thats taking abit too far.

Yes, but you'd be surprised how many mistakes there are in those descriptions.

What game is it in?

I do. I want cars which only exist in Gran Turismo. If you don't like driving a wealth of cars, maybe Gran Turismo isn't the game for you.

Menus that are disfunctional, confusing eye-sores?
Well, that's one person's opinion. ;) But I've never played a racing game and lost my jaw over how awesome the menus were. Maybe you know a racing game with awesome menus you enjoy going through?

rFactor... iRacing... blah blah...
I don't care for rFactor, and a game that is only as good as its mods isn't much of a game, is it? Heck, the menu system seems like it was designed by a bunch of drug casualties, with items like auto/manual gear selection buried so badly that it took me almost half an hour to find it! Nor do I want to get anywhere near a game like iRacing which can cost you way more than $100 a year to play.

GT5 does have some issues, but your post is littered with personal preferences versus things we like about the series.
