Hello,
I'm doing some report for school.
Tell me please about the latest trends in music right now, for teenagers.

Can be anything, from the way they share music or the latest genres.

Thx

To be as terrible as possible.

I think for a lot of kids the hardcore/emo/screamo whatever subgenre of it is one of the biggest trends. Do some research on it, and do some research on the lifestyle that comes with it. I wouldn't say it's so much a lifestyle; it's more of a fashion or a way you present yourself. I've never seen a genre of music bleed over into fashion so predominately until now. It seems now a days it's one thing to like a band; but it's important to dress like them/emulate them. It's buying into the label to assert yourself into a collective in an age full of diversity. I think the music addresses a lot of the alienation and frustration teenagers feel; but it's been around long enough that record labels have realized it's a cash cow and are now trying to cash in on it (My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, etc.)

Another major trend but might be dying soon is the emergence of indie/artcraft/whatever music. Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, etc. are all leading a musical movement that pushes for something different. It's very in touch with itself, intelligent (or trying), and a close relative to the art scene.

I can't say much for the commercialization of music since I'm sure it's been around for a long time but it just seems to be present everywhere.

The new dance music like Justice and MSTRKRFT.

Popular music is getting sexier and sexier. Younger and younger kids are listening and they themselves becoming too sexual for their ages.

Sharing is pretty obvious. Peer to peer blew up, it's unstoppable. The industries tried to reject it/put a stop to it but when they realized they couldn't they've been trying to adapt to it. Radiohead and NIN are prime examples for releasing music online free (or giving you the choice to pay for it).

Bedroom musicians are growing in number. As the availability of music making software grows; so do the number of kids making music on their computers/at home.

I'm not sure if I'm helping or talking out of my ass.

From what I see Rap/Hip hop is on a slight slump and Emo/Screamo/Grindcore/Glitzcore/Hardcore music is on a big up swing. But the music sucks, the guitars play what sounds like static and all they do is sound pigs. Stupid bree-ing. They do too much.

In other news, a small Aussie power rock band known by the name Airbourne released their CD on american shores January 29, 2008 and have been a mild sucess at the moment. Since having a song featured on a popular ABC FAmily show called Greek, they've probably doubled their American fan base.

I hope this helps!

The latest craze? Trend? Rave?

It's...

SUPERMAN DAT HOE!!!!!

I hate Soulja Boy.. good thing he's not that popular anymore. The sexuality thing is true, also.

e.g.:
She's a very freaky gurl....
Shorty got low, low, low, low, low, low, low... oh!!!
Fergalicious

etc.

Where I live its all Hip-hop & rap. they listen to the horrible ones too, I prefer the rap and hip hop songs that actually have a meaning example Tupac - Changes

Most of my more distant friends will listen to rap, emo, etc...

One of the biggest things that makes me hate rap, other than the fact that it sounds horrible, is that obnoxious black people in my school will run around singing it as loud as they can. They even go as far as going up to random people and rapping in their ear. It really makes me wonder if rappers are somehow injecting stupidity into their listeners brain via music rape.

As a teen myself I can tell you what its like in my school.

You have one group (2/4) that are into dance, rave whatever you want to call it. Personally its the most annoying thing in the world, I don't want to hear what they call as "music" not just beats which are repetively played for 7 minutes straight with some bloke "singing" high pitched about some Soldier or something...

The other group is a small minority, this group likes the Emo, Scream, Heavy Metal stuff. Personally, I don't mind that stuff there are a couple of songs which stand out from it but thats about it.

The last two groups are kind of conjoined, its between pop/rock so stuff like Sum 41, Blink 182 etc which IMO are good bands and I have quite alot of their music. Then this group slowly progress' into softer more indie like rock. This is where I fit in quite nicely with the Foo's and other bands like Feeder, Muse, Kaiser Chiefs fit in.

So as you can see the music taste varies across the school, it tends to also be the most popular teens which like dance music which makes others follow their trend like little sheep and ups the percentage of people who listen to that to about 60%, then Emo/Scream/Metal must be about 10% and the rest is softer Indie type rock and the people who like all of the styles put together.

Rap, hip-hop, emo, trance remixes of classics... One of the larger tendencies is for a song to be REALLY popular to the point that it enters mainstream culture, then it gets thrown out as a new one comes in, a bit like the capitalist society in North America. Green Day's Holiday (whatever it is), Rihanna's Umbrella and other songs are popular examples, however they still lurk in the background of pop culture.

Well, I think we're seeing at least three major trends in the "rock" mega-genre:

- The Scene scene... This is the "pop" version of the emo music, and you're going to see a lot of bands like Paramore (one of my favorites), Boys Like Girls and one of the new ones... Tokio Hotel in the mix. I really don't think the music is too different than some of the stuff we've heard before, but its more about the look/attitude than anything. That being said, I think its fun, and I like going to concerts like these. Scene chicks are hot. Seriously.

- The return of "vintage" rock. Have a look at The Killer's Sam's Town and Panic! At the Disco's Pretty. Odd. and you're seeing a growing trend in slightly more "vintage" music, both in look and feel. Not everyone is jumping on the train, but its something we're likely going to see emerge eventually with more "mainstream" bands in the future. It seems like sounds that mimic The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Doors will eventually dominate this trend. But its harder to call.

- The indie sound... I'd say its still something that's hanging around, but really hasn't "exploded" yet. Cross the Atlantic and have a listen on the BBC, definitely, its a dominant genre. In America, its still the more popular stuff. Bands like Death Cab for Cutie are making it a bit more mainstream... But yeah, the most exposure people get are usually the likes of Feist in the Apple commercials.
