Wheel vs DS2

Just got My Driving force pro yesterday, but havent got GT4p yet, so tested it out on Gt3 and within half hour was able to match my dual shock times.
the extra sense of feel and level of control over DS is immense.

Could Someone remind me Which is the best option setting and what the difference are between them in the DS set up menu in gt3:
starting with amateur and ending proffesional, as i lost my gt£ instructions and cant remeber what these options do.

It actually ends with Simulation in GT3, and that's the setting I (and most ace drivers I know) prefer most, as although it is in some ways the hardest (you can lose the rear of your car easier) it also gives the most realistic feedback about the track, and it seems to be the most realistic in general. I love it. Try driving the Arcade Silvia 1800 with it and feel the weight of the car shift from left to right in the corners, awesome. :D

If you want to test 900 degree mode in GT3 though don't expect anything realistic because GT3 doesn't support it properly and gives you the same linear steering at any speed forcing you to steer a lot even in a high speed chicane. This option is only good for setting a great laptime on test course or something similar, or when you drive a Mini, or a very neutral car like an S2000. A car that needs correction for over or understeer won't work, as that takes you too much time ...

But with GT4 Prologue it's sheer bliss ... :)

All I want to know about it concerns the "straightening out effect" mentioned earlier. Arwin, you have lots of experience with both the wheel and GT4:P correct? Does it rely solely on force feedback to bring the wheel back to the center or is there a lot of winding/unwinding/correcting to do? This is very important to me, because I hate the loose feeling many wheels give you coming out of a corner.

Maybe I've just played on lemons, but all the driving force wheels I tried on GT3 left me feeling dissatisfied. I was hoping the pro would take that step forward and offer a firm and tight feel.

Thanks Arwin
I have it on professional and the feel is great now i can really hang on the curbs.
One problem i have now is that many of my modified cars and set ups, which were perfectly drivable with the DS are now all over the place and generally unstable with the wheel.
Good job im not planning on running to much with Gt3 but looks like definatly be DFP only for Gt4 if only to make sure the set ups work.

Funny how different controls can affect how you drive and hence the characteristics of the car so greatly. I suppose that's realism for you.

I thnk that I'm more old-school. As much as I like racing in Gran Turismo, I don't think I can have any racing wheel.

On the other hand, I do have a steering wheel. In fact, I have two. I don't have any games to play it on my PC, but I have played PS1 games with the wheel. The most intriguing thing about this steering wheel is that you can play PS1 games and Nintendo 64 games with it. All you need is an adaptor, and I was playing RUSH 2 with it. It was fun. The bad news is that I don't think it works for PS2, much less GT3. I don't know if the old GT3 wheel will be functional with GT4, but it should be great fun. If I have a chance, I want to try to sell my old steering wheel with one that has a paddle shifter, like those Mad Catz wheels. But to answer the question, believe it or not, I'm going to say that the wheel is better.

Yeah, the Driving Force Pro completely blasts the old ones away. The wheel does come back by itself very well and yes it relies solely on the Force Feedback for this. Of course there are still situations where, as in real life, you'll want it to come back faster than it would all by itself. Try it if you can, I think you'll love it immediately. After I tried this, driving with my Wingman FF (with which I was pretty happy) felt like steering with a really big sponge :D

THAT'S AWESOME!!!!:D :D :D Can't wait, my mom said i have to wait till summer till i get one, she knows how much i play it:banghead: o well, summer's gonna be great!!!:D

Yesterday, I was trying to beat one of the licences in GT4:P. Well that darned EVO VIII MR one at Tskuba. Mr P a while back sent me his ghost for this for a few pointers where I was going wrong. After a while I could see places where he was able to apex the corners more effectively than me with the wheel over the DS2. Also it seemed braking was allot easier. Although i'm pretty sure he uses a wheel, but it may not be a DFP.

I have no place to mount the wheel, so there isn't much point in me buying one and resting it on my lap. :grumpy:

I normally drive with chasecam in gt, so I don't find a wheel very realistic or practical. On the pc I drive racegames with a wheel because they have a good onboard view. As long as gt4 doesn't have a good onboard view(bonnetcam or something) I wont drive it with a wheel.

cool I'll give it a shot when it comes out here. Apparently it's supposed to be released this november along with GT4. Hope it doesnt wind up like my DF (sitting in the closet after realising GT3 was a lot harder to control with an overly sensitive wheel with barely any feedback.)

With the DS2, unless you have perfect stick manipulation, Turns are too jerky. If you enter a turn too steep, you shift the weight of the car to the wrong side and will loose grip if you're using the DS2. The G-Meter on the HUD will go insane with a DS2, resulting in loss of grip and cornering.

Always used the DS, but always wanted to get the wheel. Now I'll buy one for sure but I just wanna know, does it make a lotta noise when turning the wheel? And how's the feedback, can you turn it like in a real car, like for example when you're drifting, can you throw the wheel around and it will turn sortof by itself? Hope you guys understand what i'm getting at, I find it kinda hard to explain. Because of the physics the steering wheel wants to go the way the car pushes the wheels. Hope that makes sense...
And lastly, a test like with the S2000 in the driving park; with the dual shock it's hard to speed between the cones on the part where you have to take a real slow left, right, left corner. Using the dual shock the wheels turn quite slow, can you do this faster with the wheel??

Force feedback steers always make guite some noise. It's because of the gearing inside. Real purists of racingsims don't even use ff. Compared to real life it isn't as realistic as often been said. Many of the real expensive high-spec steeringwheels don't even have force feedback. It interferes with real clean driving, according to some.

I think you can turn a car faster with a wheel because of the faster reaction compared with ds. But because of the ff effect and the gearing in the wheel I am always hesitant of doing that. It's like the steeringwheel can't handle it. As if to much tension is put on the gearing.

And still. With no realistic onboard view in gt3 and gt4 I'm not really enthousiastic on driving with a wheel. In pc games I do, but that's because they have realistic cockpit or bonnet views. If only GT4 would have a bonnet view......;)

It sure will.

In Colin Mcrae 4 the in car/bonnet view gives a totally different driving experience to the bumper cam. Much more realistic as well.

the new gameplay shots look like the viewpoint has been raised from the bumper cam of GT3. hopefully it will add to the feel of this perspective... although i have to say the in car view is better than the 3rd party perspective.

From the sounds of it, the new logi wheel seems pretty amazing and couple with the fact it was made for GT4 i;m sure it will let you get the most out of the game. Prolly take some adjusting, but i think it'll enhance the overall experience, and let you appreciate the driving physics to their fullest.
