With all the excitement around GT4, I can't help but remember the release of the PS2 itself:
I camped outside of 'Target' with my two roommates. We arrived at about midnight, and got in a line that was already building. We were about #17-#20. Other friends joined us, and other then drawing a short straw later in the night to go get food, I sat on the sidewalk until the store opened in the morning. By that time, there was quite a line. We had taken it upon ourselves to write a list of everyone's name in order, to avoid confusion, and that list was given to the store manager when she arrived.
After buying our playstations, one roommate returned home to find his EBAY auction ending, and sold his playstation for $950. I drove to a local Best Buy, which had 300 people lined up outside, along with a news crew. I strolled down the line with my PS2 in hand, and I was stared down like they were a bunch of hungry wolves and I was a ribeye steak. I said I'd give it up for $700, and was laughed at. I decided to go home, and as I was walking away, the best buy store manager came outside and passed out a voucher to the first 200 people in line - that was all the PS2's they had. After that, the 100 voucher-less people stopped laughing, and I sold it for $700 to the first person that walked over to my car.
My 3rd roommate kept his, and we all 3 used it. A few months later, I bought my own for normal price
The point of this: How long, if any, do you expect the line to be outside of your local gaming store, when GT4 hits?
