Motorsport is still a deadly sport, unlike football, so the drivers have good reason to be superstitious about the numbers on their car. Many still have their pre-race rituals.

F1 used to allow teams to choose the order of the number (instead of championship position) per team (Ferrari always used to run 27-28 I believe), just so long as the champion had #1.

#0 was only offered to Damon Hill twice because the previous season's champion did not return, so there was no one to take #1.

As for ranking the drivers based on their numbers, the numbers are assigned based on TEAM results, not driver results. Hence Hamilton having #2 in 2007, even with having no previous experience, simply because his team had #1 and #2 assigned to them.

Car numbers aren't like jersey numbers. They're assigned by the Formula One Administration at the start of each season - the Championship-winning Driver gets car #1 and his teammate gets #2 (unless the winning driver has retired, then #0 and #2 are assigned to the Constructors' Champion). The numbers are then assigned, in pairs, to the teams in Constructors' Championship order - #3 and #4 to the highest-placed constructor without an assigned number, #5 and #6 to the next, and so on.

Senna drove with a variety of numbers in his F1 career - #19, #12 a few times, #11, #1, #27, #1 again twice, #8 and, finally, #2.

I know that but I was pointing out since he died with #2 then that should be canceled too, at least the other incidents involving number 13 didn't result in death

Deaths for drivers with #13 likely occured before Formula One existed.

If we took out Senna's number, we'd have to take out the number of every other Formula One driver who died. We'd have no numbers left.

That's what I said - the exception being that the team with the champion driver always has #1 and #2, even if they weren't the champion constructor.

As The359 points out, that'd be impractical. There have been thirty-six deaths in Formula One events, and seven in testing

The most recent deaths were Senna in car #2, Ratzenberger in #32, De Angelis was driving car #8 in the season he died during testing, Palletti died in car #7 (I think) and Villeneuve in #27.
