Which racing game has dissapointed you the most?

I just want to say that i am very tired of these big companies that prioritize $$$ over innovation.
Not only in the racing genre but all the PS1 era titles that have been remixed over time.

Forza 6 is the biggest lie ever and is basically a copy of the 5 with new menus.
So when i find people praising the game on Youtube like this game is so amazing etc i really don't get it..

Younger players seems to be amazed by nothing nowadays... Seriously, what are the innovation of this game?
Just pure marketing.
 
GT6 career mode was the biggest bore-fest. While I did enjoy SOME ia events like the Super GTs (played it like 10 times) Group GT3s, Like the Wind and World Circuit Tour. Everything else was just plain terrible.
 
Bloodborne! A friend of mine said this game would have me racing towards death. Well my heart was racing, but I hated the fact there was no handbrake, dynamic weather, or a cockpitview!

Such a disappointment

Didnt tried the new NFS yet (waiting for the pc version) but so far Project CARS was the most disapointing game for me.

It's not that it's bad or anything but people in here talked about it so much that I expected a much much better game that we had at the end.

Forza was another letdown, the career is just stupid and it's not racing. It feels more like a track day or event day game.

As I said, it's a marketing tag. It applied in the 90s and maybe to GT3 but it just became a meaningless marketing tag to sound catchy and link the series together. Marketing 101, really.
A marketing tag like that is a claim. If we're talking marketing 101:

"Attributes of a product or service that are announced to an audience through marketing channels."

Being a "real driving simulator" is an attribute of the GT franchise PD has been announced to its audience for years. "It's not fair to expect getting what it says on the tin because PD has been BS'ing you for years" isn't exactly a great comeback to that, either.

And I loved GT4, for that matter.
 
Again, it is a vague statement. Yeah sure he goes for 100% in all aspects of every game, but (and this is where the PS2 bit comes in) he was limited by the PS2 hardware whether he said so or not. He, and his studio, would never be able to simulate real life like a modern sim because the PS2 is incomparable against the later consoles, not to mention PCs (the main platform of sim racers) so you'd have to compare it to contemporary games on the same system rather than any PC based sim to get a fair result. Something you don't seem to want to do.

You'll be able to use this line of reasoning on every single iteration of GT. No game will be able to simulate real life, current games included. You're really reaching to defend GT4 here - and the sentiment of that game having some physics issues is not a new one. A few of us have had issues with that one, that have otherwise enjoyed the rest of the franchise. @Tornado and @Wolfe both come to mind first. Not comparing it to current games either, but comparing to other early-to-mid-naughts ones. Enthusia did things better, and in some ways, so did GT3. Heading over to the PC, the F12k2 mods of the day were better, Nascar Racing 2003 was, and of course GPL, despite being barely younger than the first GT.

As for my vote, it's a toss-up between GT6 and PCARS. I haven't played AC or iRacing so can't comment on those two. NFS has set the bar low for the past 10 years, so I can't really be disappointed by that. GT5's long gestation didn't have me building it up pre-release, either: I expected it to have issues precisely because PD seemed to fumble with it for so long. Conversely, GT6 was a disappointment, because after three years, we were sold on the idea the second game on the PS3 would fix a lot of issues. I saw Kaz in NYC a few months before release and really believed GT6 would be a return to form. Instead, it was plagued with new issues in addition to carrying over some from GT5, or in a handful of bizarre situations, actually brought back issues from the early days of GT5 that had been fixed!

I had my personal issues with GT5, but I played it for quite a while. GT6, sadly, was played less than any other full GT title I've owned.

PCARS, on the other hand, has just been a disappointment. I'm not seeing what others see, I guess. Admittedly, I'm on what seems to be the worst platform (XB1), but I just have not got along with it. Admittedly, my tastes lean more towards road cars though. And it does have a superb track list.
 
Well, for me the absolute biggest letdown was GRID 2, and I never even played for a single second. The reason it was so bad for me was because of the way GRID played. Even though it had some totally fictional racing series in it GRID played heavily to the side of an all encompassing racing life sim. You owned cars, you signed to race for other teams, you signed teammates, you do most of the things a team owner has to do in that game except R&D to make cars faster, pay entry fees, and fix totalled race cars.

Then this weird thing happened when GRID 2 came out where you started as a street racer and some millionaire hires you to get drivers for his worldly racing series. My brother got the game and played it, and I curiously watched his first play, and when I saw that I was so turned off I wanted to make my own game.

Ugh, GRID 2, the biggest game disappointment of all time.....
 
If you take GT4 for what it really is, a simcade (or whatever the term is nowadays) it's a really enjoyable game...
Not sarcasm. I haven't heard this kind of take on GT4 before, ever.
I couldn't enjoy it for anything, realistic or not. Gran Turismo 4 was a rigid and stubbornly understeer-oriented mess that made driving a chore and squandered all that amazing (for 2005) content. I'm aware of the other things the game has going for it, but the physics were so needlessly punitive in such inaccurate ways that I've had a lot more fun playing other "broken" games like Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero, The Fast and the Furious (PS2), or Shift 2 Unleashed.

If this poll had been made before the snafu that Project CARS turned into (particularly as someone who wanted the Wii U version), I'd probably vote for GT4. Gran Turismo 3 had been a huge thing for me and my friends at the time, and I was first in line to pick up GT4 on launch day. Actually, I originally created this GTPlanet account just to view a preview video of GT4, because you needed to be registered to open it.

How do you expect them to innovate on a racing game? Experimentation netted us GT5 with Lunar driving for GT6.

As for GT4, that's easily the worst of the series for me, too. Understeer everywhere and a resolute ban on lift-off oversteer. No thank you.

Racing game are no exception to innovation and new gameplay idea.
I am just saying that Turn10 release their game as quick as possible to make as much money as possible.

In the case of the lunar driving of GT6, that's not really the innovation i had in mind lol.

Added night races and rain, both firsts for the series?

More cars then FM5 plus new tracks? Updated physics (for good or bad...)?

What kind of innovation are you thinking of then? I can't think of much to do to make it some kind of big new thing for racing games everywhere. People praise it because it's a good game, that's why. It's not something so far out that it's unbelievable like you're making it seem.

Still though, a lie? What exactly is it lying about? It doubled the amount of cars in two years, introduced a bunch of new tracks, introduced weather(somewhat), updated physics, things you'd expect from a game in this genre. They can dabble more into actual regulated racing, but that's hardly new or innovative. A game that tries to do too much usually ends up falling short as it spreads out through many catagories.

I am just saying that Turn10 release their game as quick as possible to make as much money as possible.
Making money is everyone's goal. 2 year's for a game isn't exactly a quick pace, but I'm wondering, how long would you prefer them to wait? What is an acceptable time frame? 3 years, like that of GT5-GT6, or maybe 6 years like that of GT4-GT5? I think they have a good sweet spot in development time. They support the game for a year, and that's usually is enough to hold people off until the next iteration.

The weather addition is still not convincing. Graphic wise they could have done a better job as well. Not even close to drive club.
Adding more cars is not really a feature. More tracks are always good addition tho.

If you like Forza the way it is, its good for you. I just pointed out that they could have done a better job and i am not the only one to think that.

I don't think there's any racing game that's close to Driveclub graphically aside from maybe Need For Speed.

Driveclub runs at half the frame rate, it can afford to focus more on the weather.

I didn't forget Horizon, becuase as mentioned by @SlipZtrEm, that is not T10, that is Playground games using T10's assets.

As of right now, nothing is close to Driveclub on console, but that's the kind of things you can achieve with a small on track car-count, halfing the framerate, as well as having physics that are diluted compared to Forza's(Not necessarily a bad thing, as it's a totally different direction.). Driveclub is currently one of the most beautiful racers on this genre, but that's because they route they chose to take is what allowed them to do that.

Like I said, tracks and cars and racing things is about as innovative as it will get in a racing game. They are doing exactly what you would expect a game to do in this genre. However, I asked what you think would be innovative for this type of game?

I do like Forza, and I know what you pointed out. I'm just asking for you to elaborate on why you think it's a lie, which you still haven't. Since two years seems to be a short time to you, what is a reasonable time frame?

I honestly don't think I've ever felt so disappointed and underwhelmed by a game as I did with GT5. Gran Turismo 6 is just a continuation of that. Sounds, AI, framerate, gameplay, the whole package - it's been discussed to death by this point.


Also, all this talk about GT4 made me realize I shold be playing Enthusia far more often. As much as I might have enjoyed GT4 overall, the physics engine constantly trying to fight you was really aggravating. The game's saving grace was the amount of content it had to offer.

Well i was too extreme ;)

@ImaRobot 2 years timeframe seems okay, i thought it was less than that, i am getting old, time fly slower in my head.

For the 60fps vs the 30fps you got a strong point here.
I am making my own racing sim and making it 60fps lead you to many graphics sacrifice.

When i talk about innovation, its about new stuffs to do that you would probably not expect in a racing game, new ideas of single gameplay / multiplayer.
The steering Lock at 90 in interior view where Assetto Corsa is doing it the right way. (Despite the fact that they have so much less resources).

Turn10 have strong position in the next gen market, and they just did their job without adding any extra.
I think that the fact that Gran Turismo is not on Next Gen give Turn10 a lot less pressure to surpass themselves.

You're lucky you are not like me. I only completed about 12% of GT4 and sold it, I just can't have fun with any game that handles like that. GT4 was the ultimate troll being the first GT with actual drift cars from D1gp and the first GT that had forced understeer, anti fun physics.

I was also very disappointed by Dirt rally as that claims to be a sim, but doesn't feel realistic enough for me. While before I was pleased by WRC3 because that didn't claim to be a sim, yet had convincing enough handling for an arcade game so I enjoyed it.
 
Gran Turismo 5 by a mile. Bland, unusually unrefined and very clinical feeling, even more so than GT4. At least that game had genuinely interesting stuff to offer which made it fun all the same. Also, I went into it blind; I'd stopped following any news outlets for it since they kept throwing out phony release dates and info. When I heard it was out, it was a straight-up impulse buy. After all, my family had bought a PS3 (3 years prior don't forget) solely for it. The disappointment of seeing the standard cars, bad audio (admittedly something none of the GT games did well in hindsight; though again, the older games had cool turbo noises and some of the digital sounds were actually quite nice regardless) and just clumsiness of the game's layout was intensely annoying.

Forza 5 also gets a mention. Unlike GT5, I knew what I was getting with that, and figured the cries of people saying "you'll get bored, there's barely any content" would not bother me. Oh how wrong I was. Slidey physics and general 'launch game' design choices really didn't help. Forza 6 amended practically all of these issues thankfully.
 
To this day I'm still not entirely sure what happened with Most Wanted 2. All of the pieces were in place that they should have been able to put together something that hit everything out of the park since they already did that with Hot Pursuit 3. Then... that happened.

I could compare GT4's physics to other GT games on the same system (which all still used the same progressively tweaked game engine from 1997) and GT4 wouldn't come out looking too sparkling. It was a very pretty game. It was a game that had a ton of love put into developing it, and it showed in spades (though it was also the start of when the series began sterilizing itself of all personality). The physics in it were still not very good, and I honestly hated playing it as a result with all but a small handful of cars. I still put a ton of time into it, trying to carve out my own fun with it (so I can't really call it a disappointment like the train wreck that GT6 was); but this was still a game where there was clearly large effort put into trying to better model the effects of more subtle things like weight transfer as it acts on each tire (something GT1-GT3 basically just didn't even bother with), but something as simple as power oversteer was practically impossible except with FWD cars.
