I used to play Forza 1 with the X-box controller, but I bought GT4 & a G25 at the same time & never even tried GT4 with the PS2 controller. With a wheel it doesn't feel right to drive using anything but the bumper or (in GT5P) the cockpit view.

Last night I wanted to have a good look - "sightseeing" - around the London track, so I drove slowly using the chase view. It occurred to me that, in fact, the chase view could offer a huge advantage when racing, because it allows you to see your car in relation to the other cars around you, giving you more information about where exactly to position your car.

Anyone alternate between cockpit & chase view & notice a difference in their racing ability?

I can't control the car in chase view - it just freaks me out completely. Motorstorm and Wipeout I prefer chase view but GT I have to be inside the car. Don't know if I could get used to it, cos I haven't tried.

i find in chase view i do seem to drive a bit better being able to see into the apex and all but i refuse to use it and i only stick with cockpit view when actually racing. if im just learning a track ill use it to find reference points for braking and learn the apex for corners or if im just sightseeing on the track like London ill use it. other than that dont use it.

3rd person/chase view is the slowest.

There's a french PS magazine that invited some real french racing drivers to test GT5P (with G25 and seat).

All of them choose chase view to have the same advantages Biggles described. It seems for them that cockpit view or bump view were great but not sufficient compare to real cockpit view regarding race conditions and necessity to know what's going on around the car. They also found that chase view allowed them more precision to hit the apex.

Anyway, I still prefer cockpit view for the immersion and sounds. I'm maybe used to estimate others cars positions on games that make the difference with real racing drivers. But chase position is for sure the better way to exactly control others cars positions and moves.

3rd person/chase view is in my opinion for noobs, hehehe.

Why? Well it's basically for people who can't 'feel' the car and have very little intuition about gaming control. They need to rely on visual stimulation for racing, which means that they're rather 2 dimensional in their approach. I don't trust my eyes as much as I trust my 'feel' and the only people who use this view seem to be kids and people who can't play a racing game.

Hehehe.

Oh how I wish for TrackIR support to GT5p.. That would be so sweet....

I use the bumper view because you get that good little mirror at the top which shows when you are clear of someone or if someone is coming up behind, you can also move the camera in this view unlike the view just on top of the roof, which is what I use to use.

I think it also depends on what controls you use. I've tried several racing games using a steering wheel and chase view and it just felt odd. Not so with a controller.

I'm the same with DS or wheel. I can't 'feel' the car properly

I use the roof/bonet cam, not sure which it is called.

I have been using chase view since the 1st GT and I DO NOT need visual stimulation. You must be some kind of expert then.I just prefer chase view.

the only time i would use the 3rd person cam is so i can check out the environment, new visual mods ive made on a car, check my tire position, camber, toe, spring rates, ride height, check how fast or slow my dampers are moving and in GT5P's case, admire the hyper realistic car models.

bumper/roof/in-cockpit is a must for me when racing because its so much easier to see the apex, you get mirrors and its more real-to-life

I find bumper cam the 'fastest'. It gives the widest and lowest view of the track and allows for better precision in movement. The dips during braking and other suspension changes are very helpful feedback; this is missing from roof cam view.

Most fun for me is cockpit view, for obvious reasons.

Sorry, BMFan, I didn't mean to offend, it was just an observation of mine over the years. I used to be a 3rd person driver too before Gran Turismo came out, but I wasn't a hardcore racer before then.

I've found that all of my mates who play GT start off on the chase view and as soon as they switch to the incar/bumper cam, they immediately stop relying on the visual cues and their driving tends to improve. I haven't met anyone who has stuck with the chase view apart from a half Russian mate of mine and he's consistently crashing and unable to keep up. He refuses to let the 'entire car' view go and insists that he must 'see' what the car is doing all the time so he can drive.

Spatial awareness is the correct term for it and it's well known that children and women lack fully developed spatial awareness ability and can't judge distances if they can't see them properly. It happened to the Hampster after his accident and his driving skills have suffered for it.

I think that chase view is indeed more used by people new to the game and racing games in general. Personally I have never been able to be fast using it. I have always used the bumper view. In GT5P the cockpit view is sweet for all the obvious reasons but the actual screen area that you use for track viewing is at least halved so unless you are using a huge tv set I don't think it is worth it. For now, I'm sticking with my bumper cam.

Same here. I'm a bumper-cam guy and have been since the first GT. I tried the chase view when I started racing online, so I could better see who's around me, but the timing seems all different. I couldn't follow my usual line in any corner, it was just too weird.

The only time I'm racing and don't use the bumper-cam is when I'm in the F2007. It's so low to the ground I can't see the corners coming up!

Bumper cam for online racing and testing. I like to watch the front end spring movement under load.

I use the bumper cam when I race online or in a difficult event.
Other than that I like to sit in the cockpit, since it's awesomly cool to see the interior and the racers movement. And it feels the most realistic.

In GT4 I always raced bumper cam because the chase view feels weird with a wheel. I switched over entirely to cockpit when GT5P came along, except when the game starts up & it sometimes takes me a lap to notice I'm in bumper view!

There's no doubt in my mind that cockpit view is the most "immersive", but it's possible that it's more difficult than bumper because of the even more restricted peripheral vision (BTW: a bigger TV doesn't give you any increase in the field of vision).

But the point of my original post was whether it might actually be an advantage to race chase cam/controller because of the perspective it gives you on the action. I know I have occasionally shunted another car on-line, just because I wasn't aware it was right next to me - unlike IRL you have absolutely no peripheral vision to help out.

I don't crash "all the time"and the times of my favorite cars are normally in the top 100 of the rankings, maybe i am 1 of the few that are quicker in chase view plus i like looking at what i am driving.

Whichever view the fastest guy uses is the fastest view.

There is no "fastest view", the same as there is no "fastest controller." It's all down to the guy who is driving.

Agree

That's missing the point: could the same driver be faster using a different view/controller.

I don't have any ability with a PS2/3 controller & I'm not about to waste a couple of hundred hours developing it, but there must be people out there who are good with both...

When i had the DFP it toke me a few races to get used to the wheel and about a day to get my times back-started using manual gears when i got the wheel.kept same view

I can't even stay on the track if I dont have that camera that's right off the track, and you can't see any part of the car.

Same here :) Have been a bumper-viewer since GT1.
As mentioned, I find it the clearest to see tach- and speedometer, and the rear-view mirror.

However, I do agree that peripheral vision is severely limited. Driving side-by-side 200R on Suzuka is...interesting...without side vision :sly:

+1 for this, but I prefer to use cockpit view actually, as the point-of-view isn't dramatically different to bumper in this car.

I too am absolute RUBBISH without a wheel . Can't play any driving games without a wheel! haha

(BTW i think this would be a good "Poll" thread, if there hasn't already been one)

On a similar topic, how do people find playing split-screen 2 player? I find I can't drive in that mode to save my life, primarily due to not clearly hearing engine noise for gear shifting.

you race 3rd person with the DFP? and you're infact, faster that way?

in car view all the way, the mirrors work ( if you can see them) and it gives a great fell for how the car is handling. I cant drive in the chase view at all, it feels so numb and a LOT slower.
