you race 3rd person with the DFP? and you're infact, faster that way?

I was faster,i find i am more comfortable with 3rd person view.I don't have the wheel any more.

(BTW: a bigger TV doesn't give you any increase in the field of vision).

I does not, what it does is give you a larger area to see the track ahead, whereas if you're using a small tv you need all the screen and some more for that and can't afford to use cockpit view wasting precious pixels with interior details, as good as it may look.

I use whatever view I feel like using at the time. If I'm using the DS2/3 I prefer Coptercam. If I'm using the DFP/G25 I prefer Cockpitcam (Bumpercam for GT4 and earlier).

In either case, if you think Coptercam and button bashing makes a driver slow and likely to crash, there's quite a good chance you've never driven against me. Or Mr. P.

Also, this:

Whichever view the fastest guy uses is the fastest view.

There is no "fastest view", the same as there is no "fastest controller." It's all down to the guy who is driving.

I've always (since GT1 and before) used chase cam. I've always found it offers the most acurate on-track positioning and more importantly gives you some peripheral vision. Since GT5:P has come out, i've forced myself to adopt to bumper cam - the added 'feel' that GT5:P offers makes this view the most intuitive. I'd probably still switch back to chase cam for the Daytona Oval races since you get a better idea of where other cars are around you.

When i get around to buying a nice big flat wide screen TV i'll probably try to use the cockpit cam. Until then you just can't see enough of the track using a 25' 4:3 TV.

All of my best Time Trial laps and my WR were done in cockpit view. I have always raced PC sims and that is pretty much all I know. I guess it is just an acquired taste.

Every now and then I switch to the "gauges view" when racing a car that has poor visibility, but only to minimize the chances of bumping into someone. My lap times are still better in the cockpit view.

I played around with the chase cam a couple of times and I can barely keep the car on the track! I react to everything prematurely. I can't keep the car on the track with a controller either. :grumpy:

I played GT1 from the chase cam, but dang...that was a LONG time ago. :)

Although I have used cockpit-cam pretty much exclusively since I got GT5P, I ended up playing online last night with bumper-cam instead of cockpit-cam. I'm fairly sure I was more comfortable with this & faster - it just gives you a bigger, clearer view.

It's kind of a shame not to use cockpit-cam, given how much time & effort PD must have put into it. Unfortunately, the truth is, although the cockpit view is amazingly detailed & "realistic", it is really very restricted in its range of vision, & this is not "realistic".

However, my question was mainly addressed at those (like daan:  ) who profess to be adept at both wheel & controller - does using the chase view (which I consider "impossible" with a wheel) with the controller, confer an advantage because of the additional "positioning" information it provides?

I think it's a case of swings and roundabouts. Chase cam gives you a better idea of car positioning, but bumper or cockpit cam give you a better idea of the car's attitude i.e. whether you are under or oversteering.

Chase cam is 'too; smooth. You need to see and feel the movement of the car and using bumper or cockpit view will accomplish that. The apex of a corner is much easier to see and hit with the bumper cam.
For top times, bumper cam. If you are racing online or just by yourself, cockpit cam. The only time I use chase cam is when drifting. It is really hard using the other views to drift. Mainly because you can't turn your head inside the car or on bumper cam. But then again, that would be silly in a car game to try and simulate peripheral vision.

Oh how I wish for TrackIR support to GT5p.. That would be so sweet....
TrackIR isn't possible, it's for pc but the PS Eye, maybe.

Bumper camera is the fastes for me, second view I use is the cockpitview.

I hope that GT5p will have the possibility to create a peripheral view by using a multi monitor setup, like in GT3, GT4.

I like to think im fast, and I use bumper cam. Nothing beats it's precision, feel, and you can see the exit of the turn. It all has to do with seeing as far ahead as possible. With chase view you're looking at the car and what it's doing instead of feeling what its doing, and If you need to orientate yourself with other drivers, use the directional buttons to look left/right. This is what I do for hairpins to see how far to push wide when someone is passing on my inside.

cockpit view has the advantage of wing mirrors and the look left/right is more fluid. Its also a more natural view being on the left or right, all the other camera's are dead centered. There is also more noise from the exhaust inside, on bumpercam the wind noise almost overpowers the engine.

Although it is slightly slower, but you do get a better feel of the car. Oversteer is much more apparent in cockpit or bumper view rather than chase cam.

Freaks me out that some people cannot orientate themselves with their surroundings from within the cockpit of a car.

Odd, i don't see how a view can be fastest. It's all driver preference, i use chase view online to make good, clean overtakes and see people coming easily. Then offline i use cockpit because i enjoy it more. It's that simple, i have no trouble running similar lap times once i've adjusted to each (although generally im fastest on chase from so much online play) but im also one of the cleanest (on the whole :sly:) thanks to the see-all nature of chase.

I like the advantages mentioned to the chase camera but I actually seem to have reaction time problems with it, something about the other modes helps me know what the car's doing a little better.

Love the cockpit view but too much of a newb to be able to properly tell how much room I have on the track so far, particularly if the wheel is on the right. Love the sights and sounds in there so use it quite a bit, but if I'm having a good competetive race I'm usually using the bumper cam.

i ahte the chase view you feel slow and you cant feel the car i use the bumper view where you have great sight andi think you can hit the apex perfect alos you have a mirror so you dont have to look behind when pressured

Again, I feel that it's weird to use chase view if you're using a wheel, but it might make sense if you're using a controller which IMO, is more like "playing a game" than actually driving. When I was using a controller to play PGR2 & Forza 1 on the Xbox, I found it more fun & easier using the chase view than the bumper view.

As I suspect it's harder to play GT5P without a wheel, I think that racing in chase view might provide some compensating advantages in terms of perspective & situational awareness.

I don't understand. Are you saying that playing with a wheel vs controller has a better advantage in terms of perspective and awareness?

I use bumper cam about 75% of the time and cockpit the other 25%. Depends on my mood, where I'm racing and whom I'm racing. I use the SIXAXIS controler. I'm not the best racer nor am I the worst. I have my good days and my bad days, but the bumper cam gives me a better "feel" of the handling. The only down side is I can't see to my left or right. :nervous:

i use the cockpit view and the bumper view...i am equally as fast in both, but i prefer the bumper cam because i find it easier to clip the apex...i can do this with the cockpit view too but i find one side easier then the other depending which side your sitting on inside the car. i also find that with bumpercam view i notice the car getting out of shape quicker then i do with the cockpit view.

I can't imagine even trying out any other view than the cockpit view. I play the game for the rush of being as close as i can to being inside of a race car. Lap times really don't matter that much to me. I would rather have an intense race then a boring victory. The cockpit just brings me so much deeper into the game, the sound, the speed, everything just seems faster and louder. I've waited on this view since the beginning of the series, I can't imagine using anything else.

No. I'm saying that chase view may offer an advantage in terms of perspective & situational awareness, & playing using a controller & chase view may help offset the disadvantage of not using a wheel.

I tried using chase view, but I found myself constantly oversteering! Now I use the cockpit view, bonnet view, or bumper view for all my driving in any driving game/sim.

Are you aware of using the directional buttons on the controller to look left/right. If someone has disapeared from your rear view and you last saw them moving to your inside or outside-you can use the directional button to look over your shoulder and spot them, this way you dont run them off the road(kinda like you did to me that one time at suzuka turn1:lol: J/k J/k :dopey:

I have mine setup so L1 and R1 are look left and right, because they're easier to reach, and Ive moved look behind to the down directional button, because I dont need to look behind as much, I use the rear-view mirror mostly.

Also, to help with launch control, Ive put the RA Function menu to the Up directional button and placed the increment and decrement functions to L3 and R3.

Oh, and the view I use is now mostly the bumper camera, purely for the rear view mirror. I would use the roof camera because I find it easier to drive and a better view, but for some silly reason, PD didnt put a rear view mirror in that view.

right now I am using the in car cam, but after reading a couple of the replies I might try the bumper cam, I get my driving force gt on friday, can't wait.

In GT5P I use nothing but cockpit cam, as for which is fastest? Daan set it straight earlier in the thread, it all depends on the driver and which he/she is most comfortable with.

I can't drive in anything but Cockpit view in GT5:p, anything else freaks me out because I don't get the feeling I'm actually driving the car, which is something I do get in Cockpit view, I find I'm also much cleaner online when I use Cockpit view, but when I use bumper/hood cam/chase, I always brake way to early.

From,
Chris.

i have always used the bumper cam but have quickly adjusted myself to the cockpit cam and that is all i use now.

Cockpit ftw. I have my left/right on D-Pad set to look left and right so its perfect! :)
