Tonight I finally get to try Guinness from the tap!! The place we went to last weekend didnt have any Guinness at all. :dunce:
I am going to try a regular Guinness Draught then after that I will try a Black and Tan. :)
Heather will be driving.

I've never tried Guinness and I don't think I know any pubs in Auckland that would serve it on tap, I'm sure I could find an English/Irish pub that would serve it.

Guinness really doesn't 'travel' well anyway - even when transporting it over the Irish Sea to England it looses enough of its quality for it to taste different :(

- Forget transporting it halfway around the world!

I'll be going to wedding and BBQ tomorrow so I'm thinking about trying a black & tan. Any purists got suggestions for what to use?

For the tan bit, try Tennent's Velvet or Belhaven Best. For after 8 pints of it, try a haggis supper :p

Well, I have sold another man on Guinness. My brother-in-law went with me to see Superman and while waiting for the movie we decided to go to my favorite bar and get sloshed. It shares a parking lot with the movie theater so why not, right?

At my suggestion he started off with what the bar calls a Blacksmith (Guinness and Smithwicks, very tasty) and had two more of those and then a straight Guinness. His exact words were, "This is really good!"

It feels good to teach a frat boy that increasing the beer budget is worth it as long as it doesn't mean more watered down American beer.

Thanks. Got some Belhaven Best, they never had bottles so I had to get cans (shouldn't make much of a difference should it?). I'll try one later on to see what it's like, both on its own and with some Guinness.

DRIFT GOD
tomarow is my birthday (32) and my wife took me to my favorite pub 👍

Happy birthday bro!
I had my first Guinness from the tap last night. All of you were right..I cant believe how good it was. It was so good I felt like I was drinking ice cream!!
I also had a Black and Tan. It had harps on the bottom and that was also very good. 👍

Never had any dark beers.
I'm currently partial to Blue Moon Belgian White Ale.
I also like Sam Adams Light.
My neice keeps telling me how good Guiness is.
I've yet to try it.
Some day perhaps....

The Guinness Can

I had the good fortune to be invited to attend a very special beer happening (am I dating myself with that term?) recently by Tom Dahldorf of the California Celebrator. The event was Guinness' unveiling of their new product, Pub Draught Guinness. Now, I can hear the lot of you saying to yourselves "Yeah, yeah, another 'draft beer in a can', big deal". But this one is different. For the most part this product actually does what it is supposed to do! Anyone who has had Guinness Stout on draught and from a bottle knows there is a vast difference between the two brews. The brewery makes no secret of the fact that the recipes are different not only between the kegged version and the bottled, but also between different bottled markets. Now the folks at Guinness have developed a system which dispenses their stout from a can in such a way as to rival a pub tap. They have been working on this for some 20 years and the final method was preceded by over 100 failed attempts. The problem has always been the fact that draught Guinness is (or should be) dispensed with a mixture of Nitrogen and CO2 gasses rather than the conventional CO2 alone. The nitrogen is used because it makes very fine bubbles while it is not absorbed into the brew as the CO2 is, thus it does not "over-carbonate" the beer. Also a special faucet is preferred which, in combination with the gasses, creates that wonderful creamy brown head which lasts to the bottom of the glass. The new can combines the original kegged stout recipe with technology which creates the draught effect to a tee. Dr. Alan Forage, creator of the technology, was on hand to explain the mechanics of the new can. This is the way the system works: The 16.9 ounce can (containing 14.9 ounces of beer) is fitted with a small plastic device (Guinness calls it a "smoothifier") which sits in the bottom of the can. This device has a pocket or cavity which is open to the atmosphere via a pin hole in its top. The can is evacuated of oxygen and filled with beer. Prior to sealing the can, a dose of liquid nitrogen is added to the beer. The can is closed and as the liquid nitrogen warms a pressure is created. The pressure forces about 1% of the beer and nitrogen into the plastic cavity. When the can is opened, the pressure is released and the small amount of beer in the cavity is forced back through the pinhole quite violently. The agitation created by this "geyser" mixes the nitrogen with the beer in such a way as to reproduce the tap handle character. Open up the first empty can you have in order to see what the "smoothifier" looks like. Prior to serving, the beer must be chilled. Guinness suggests a two hour stint in a refrigerator, with a target serving temperature of 45-50 degrees (if opened while warm, the beer gushes with excess force). This is the one area where flavor will be variable since most American refrigerators hold their temperatures closer to 35-40 degrees. We all know the colder the beer the less the flavors are perceptible. Education will be the key here. The entire contents should be emptied into a 16 ounce glass. The head which forms is exactly like that of the draught version. And yes, it does last to the bottom of the glass. How does it taste? In my opinion, this is virtually the same as what you get at a well maintained pub. The texture is right on. The flavor is wonderful. I suspect there may be some slight differences as a result of the volume of the package (14.9 ounces vs. 15.5 gallons) but I didn't notice any. According to Declan Maguire, group marketing director of Guinness Import Company here in the U.S., extensive taste comparisons were made throughout Ireland and England during the development of the product. This includes side-by-side blind tastings with the original version. The stout is 4% alcohol by volume.

After a couple of drinks, anything tastes good

There's plenty of decent American beer out there. Sam Adams and Red Hook are good places to start.

I forgot to add my thoughts because that didn't turn out too well. I tried it later that night and didn't enjoy it and the BBQ I was supposed to be going to didn't work out as planned either, so I've yet to have a decent one in company. Maybe soon.

I was out the other night to see a mate's band and got a bad pint (was very watery looking back but I didn't think too much of it at the time because I was getting my ears slaughtered by live music). Almost broke my 4 and a half year long stretch of not being sick through drink but luckily I held it together

Mixing drinks (Guinness and Magners) might not have been such a hot idea either.

Now, since I'm a nancy boy, I enjoy Mike's Hard Lemonade. Oh well.
Hey, that's good stuff!

The problem with beer is that there are deeeeeelicious beers, and a whole host of beers that taste like **** (anything that high school/college kids drink, basically). Once you find a good beer (in 7 years, of course, when you turn 21 ;)), you'll like beer. As a rule of thumb, if the beer costs only $8.99 for a 24 pack, don't drink it.

I only like the Sam Adams seaonal brews and Redhook is pretty good.

I saw a 17-year-old girl drinking one of those at the party I went to Saturday night. :sly:

After that I have to confess, after drinking myself to my happy place I hold the buzz by drinking Smirnoff Ice. It's not strong enough to get me drunk, but it will hold my buzz after I've reached where I want to be.

I used to enjnoy the odd pint of Guiness now and then, that was before I found out I was alcohol intolerant.

Didn't like the last pint I had though, ended up having to eat it with a spoon. :yuck:

Love the stuff. It slips down nicely wherever and whenever I feel like a drink.
Best I've ever had was at the brewery in Dublin.
Worst mistake I ever made though was 5 pints of guinness followed by a variety of spirits. It curdled in my stomach... the rest though I'll leave to your imagination!

From in the stomach, much confusion.
From out the mouth, vile extrusion.

Sorry.

After much experimenting lately, I finally found a way to get a taste as close as possible to the bar draught.
My girlfriend got this mug from her mom that is about $2.00. Inside the lining of this mug is water or some liquid that freezes. I simply leave the mug in the freezer upside down. Now whever I drink Guinness I just use a violent pour from a bottle or can and let it set in the mug for about 1 or 2 minutes. The violent pour activates about 1/4"-1/2" of head at the top of the mug.
The taste is as close as you can possibly come to draught at the bar!! Like drinking liquid ice cream. :dopey: :dopey: :dopey:
The best part is the mug is always ice so even a warm Guinness will be freezing cold in about 2 minutes. 👍 👍

20 years after they were invented and you're just discovering freezer beer mugs?

Hey, the 60s called, and they want you back!

Do you know how cruel this is, making me read this while I still have 2 and a half hours of work left? :irked: :p

I agree. I still have 7-8 hours to go at work!! I will probably leave early today though so I can get this holiday weekend started early. Definely getting some Guinness tonight. :sly:

I know that feeling. It is 10:00 AM here and I have a fantasy football draft party tonight at 7:00. I am just counting down the hours until alcohol and trash talking commences.

I have just bought a circa 1960's Guinness glass tankard off E-bay for £10.50.inc P&P
guinnesskc1.jpg

Just to take down the pub so that I know which is my pint, in-amongst the 4 other Guinness drinkers on my pool team!

Also I have a bid in for a 2 pint cut-glass Guinness tankard to go into my collection!

How anal is that?

Get in trouble I may, but I've had a draught Guiness or two before. Absolutely delicious, at least as beers go. I'd still rather have a Coke, but Guiness is way better than the light Bud and Miller that everyone else drinks. People I know say Guiness is "a man's beer" and "that craps for a certain breed", but I think it's alright. I actually drank it without thinking otherwise, unilke that damn Bud Light when I was like "Dude, I can't finish this crap" after every sip.

Ever heard of a glass kept in the freezer section(ice-box), and cans kept in the fridge also! (an ever lasting supply helps)
I have a 36 can 'Stella Artois' fridge in the bedroom, right next to my computer/PS2 setup. Perminantly set to 'summer/max' setting, and cycle the Guinness through!
I always have 'Guinness extra cold' on 'ring-pull'
Only the misses' bottle of wine spoils the perfect system!
(Got to keep the beer and wine out of the foster-kid's mits ain't I?)

Failing that (on VERY short notice and/or dire circumstances), put the cans in the deep freeze for about 20 mins (in-amongst the frozen veg), glass in the ice-box, pour gently( as the frozen glass adds to the 'life' of the pour), perfect head, nice flavour, good settle!

Amen! Brother!

Guinness is the drink of the truly relaxed, laid-back drinker!

It takes over a minute to pour (correctly), it requires taste and time to savour!
A 'man's' drink? maybe?
But a 'drink for a certain breed' NO!

The Fallasy that only the Irish drink and enjoy Guinness is CRAP!

Anyone that has taste for a good, well brewed, satisfying beer should enjoy Guinness over a pint of chemically enhanced lager, any day!
It has depth of flavour that only open-air fermentation tanks can provide (even the occasional added rodents and insects add to the character:sly: )
(BTW I used to work at a real-ale brewery, so I know what goes on!)
