shame sony are giving me another one or i would smash a brick in mine
lol would make a nice pic for my avatar

hehe bet the sony boys would laugh when they opened the box and saw a ps3 with a brick in the top

You sure thats a problem with the FW and not just your router? I had a problem with getting signed out every 2 - 3 minutes AGES ago (as in last year) and it ended up being uTorrent running on my PC conflicting with the PS3 (probably trying to use the same ports). Disabling it fixed my problem, that was after about 2 months of trying every single configuration I could change on my router.

Like I said above, me, my mates, and people on other forums are not experiencing issues. So that kind of indicates the problem is at your end. Otherwise everyone would have problems if it was the PSN at fault.

My router worked fine with the console before the update... this is why I dont understand, I only have 1 wire wired connection so it can't be anything to do with my PC because its not connected to the net when im on the PS3. Ive turned the modem off and back on, checked its settings and it all seems fine. Could it be that the firmware reset some connection settings the PS3?

I was thinking along the lines of "2.4 Bricked My Playstation" T-Shirts! :sly:

It could be but check your connection settings if you did not and try making a new connection setting.

Sony probably won't say what happened to protect their propertiary XMB secrets. Firmware's basically a middle man enabling the software (game) to access the CPU and the GPU. Dvd drive and HDD got their own controllers built in, (Can somebody confirm if there's a onboard memory controller bulit in or is it all software emulated) XMB's firmware doesn't regulate HDD access, just merely provides a API for the software (game) to access the hardware features. The Firmware update won't change the data on those onboard controller, It just acts like a gateway (API) for the software to access the hardware. E.G. bluetooth, dvd drive, hdd drive, onboard sound chip, usb ports have their own hardware based controllers therefore they should not be affected by the firmware update. Prehaps the absence of the emotion chip (ps2 cpu) is causing the 2.4v firmware to behave in unexpected manner. Fear not ps3 fanboys, thanks to Sony's world class customer service and relations, your sick ps3 will be well taken care of. (had a sony bravia 46' LCD crap on me and Sony honored the warranty)

1. Yes, the HDD and Blu-Ray drives DO have their own independant controllers. I know this because the HDD is a standard laptop 2.5" SATA HDD and I have had to fix a jammed Blu-Ray drive for my mate, and being an Electronic Engineer (studied a BEng in Electronic Engineering & Computer Science, so I also know some Computer Science as well, but its mainly engineering) I thought id have a wee look around while I was in there, and I noticed there was indeed a drive controller chip.

2. I highly doubt it, this is causing issues for all PS3's. Ones with and without the PS2 Emotion Engine & Graphics Synthesiser.

I have a UK 60GB PS3 (emulates PS2 games) with FW 2.40 and it runs just fine. However some people with US 60GB PS3's that use PS2 hardware are having problems, and vice versa.

It's just as soon as I've updated the firmware its gone like this. It maybe just coincidence, but I've never had any kind of a major problem before hand (apart from bluetooth dropping out twice)

The thing is that if it was some bug or glitch in the update itself, then why would so many more people report having no problems than those that are?

I can only say that for myself, my parents, and everyone I know personally that has a PS3 and updated to 2.40 before it was pulled has not experienced any of the issues you mentioned.

Since the update our PS3 has been used for the following things:

  • Playing a couple SACDs
    • Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
    • Riccardo Chailly, Royal Orchestra - Mahler: Symphony 9
  • Four Blu-ray Movies
    • Pixar Short Films Collection: Vol.1
    • 3:10 toYuma
    • The Departed
    • Mission Impossible III
  • One DVD
    • Spy Kids 2
  • Five PS3 Blu-ray Games
    • SingStar (off & online)
    • Hot Shots Golf: OOB (off & online)
    • Lego - Indiana Jones
    • MotorStorm
    • GT5P (online)
    • GTA4 (off & online)
  • Four PSN Games
    • Opertation Creature Feature
    • High Stakes Poker (online)
    • Calling All Cars
    • Super Stardust HD
  • One PS2 Disc Game
    • Ecco The Dolphin (some Dreamcast Old School) ;)
  • Two Home Movies (converted from .mov to .wmv)
    • In-laws Landing at Airport
    • Fourth of July Parade
  • Kids using EyeCreate
  • Two Video Chats
    • Both to California
  • Viewing and sharing lots of Photos via Video Chat
  • Downloading Content from Four PSN Stores
    • USA
    • UK
    • HK
    • JP
  • Sending and Receiving Messages via XMB

So far we have had no issues with our PS3 through all of that, no problems with our WiFi connection, online play, and no additional fan noise.

Hopefully, what ever may be causing or has caused the problems you mentioned will be properly identified and fixed.

I'm beginning to doubt 2.4 had anything to do with these few users who are having problems.

Format your HDDs or call Sony.

To be fair, I dont really think the problem is with the FW, but with the PSN, because those that reported problems are the people who's download reached half way, then instantly shot to the end.

When it does this all CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Checks) are missed out, so if the FW is not downloaded correctly then it will not be installed properly (causing bricking of the console). However if the CRC checks had not been missed out, any people who had bad downloads would have automatically re-downloaded the parts that failed the CRC checks until they passed.

Then once a fully copy that passed the CRC checks had been downloaded it would be installed properly.

I've formated my HDD and now my ps3 is completly working thank you guys. I've upgraded mine to 160 GB samsung hard disk while I'm at it.

Well I've updated my 60 GB launch PAL PS3 with no problems at all , I downloaded to a storage device then did the update .

Every single system update I have ever installed does this. By the time it reached the 50-60% done it then zips to the end. If you go through this thread and search the Main PS3 thread, you'll find many posts from others saying the exact same thing happens to them when they download a system software udate. There is nothing unusual about that at all.

I suspect like most download software programs, the CRC is done after the download is complete (100%), so whether it zips to the end like all the system updates have, or slowly finishes, that alone should not cause the CRC to be skipped.

I do think you are on to something though, and that perhaps for some reason, the CRC was skipped (not from the zip to 100%, but after). The strange thing is why only a few appear to have been effected by this?

Will this fix peoples problems, or just ensure that those that have not downloaded it yet dont get any problems?

Why did you think they pull 2.4 off anyways?

For the people who are having problems reformat the HDD or send to Sony(Also make sure you backup your saves on the computer:tup:).

2.41 should (emphasis on should) resolve any issues with current users of 2.40 (though personally I have had none) and should also be a stable update for those still running FW 2.36.

My euro 60GB is still working great and when I downloaded 2.40 it took about half an hour to get 60% then it shot to 100% in seconds. Could a few people affected have a tiny electric power drop or something or maybe a corrupt wifi download.

It always happens to me... and everything is fine after I install the update.

The strange thing is why only a few appear to have been effected by this?

Most likely because they are the few unlucky people who had a dodgy download, and the lack of CRC meant that the FW tried to install even though it was corrupt.

Where as the majority of people downloaded the file without any errors, and hence they had no problems, even without there being any CRC checks.

However, all this is just a THEORY!!

I really like your theory. it makes so much sense. Courrpt Firmware WILL brick any PS3 period!! so it may be that case. You're a GENIUS! H3rmaN. As of now, Courrpt firmware is on the top of my list of proable causes for the bricking.

Individuals with a bricked system are almost always the victims of packet loss. It will only take a few bytes of information loss to cause irreparable damage.

SCEE has sent us the official statement on firmware 2.41.

“The PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) system software version 2.41 is now available for update from July 8, 2008. With this update, we have fixed the problem that prevented a limited number of PS3s from activating properly after updating to version 2.40, when certain system administrative data were contained on the HDD.

For those users who have updated to version 2.40 and have experienced the problem that XMB™(XrossMediaBar) is not appearing, or no images are displaying on the screen, please contact Customer Service.

We have confirmed that for those users who have successfully updated to the version 2.40 and are able to activate the PS3 system, this problem will not occur on your PS3.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you and appreciate your understanding and continued support.”
