Who told the Japanese...

... that the maximum allowed horsepower for the commercial manufacturer cars was 280?! WHO?! I want to hunt them down.

Does it really matter, since Japanese car manufacturers have been going over that limit for many years anyway? :p

I dont really mind cuz I dont live in Japan. And the new STi comes to us with a 2.5L 300 HP engine :)

I don't know. There's some kind of law in Japan that you can't make a car with more than 276 hp....although many japanese supercars have more hp than that in reality.

It's not a law - it's a "gentlemen's agreement". Which means they all do whatever the heck they want, but they agree to pretend that the cars only have 300 hp.

It's definitely a different world over there.

Seriously it is... The major manufacturers "agreed" to not produce cars with more than 280PS (276hp) - get it right... :D - as they were worried where this kind of space-race might lead. I guess they wanted to make the car cabins suck less... :D

In Japan a gentleman's agreement is nearly as good as a contract (trust me on this).

So they all say "Ah yes. New R34 Skyline, 155mph (limited), 0-100km/h in 5.0s, 280PS". Then someone tests and dynos it and it's 180mph, 4.7s and 310hp...

The Supra kind of got away with it, because it was in production before the agreement. But even so, the Japanese-spec versions have 276hp (really, not "276hp") - the UK-spec ones arrived with a larger turbo and air intake on the bonnet, and 326hp.

mentioned it before i got in:) here its been said to be 206KW (kilowatts) but hey i only work in HP as well

would love to live in that world

Heh, yeh, I always used to wonder why the hell all the Lancers and Skylines came stock at 276 bhp...:D

Isn't kilowatts the old measurements? What are kilowatts based on?

kilowatts is the metric system (kilowatts is newer)
i am happy with both
it is based on watts of energy, ive forgotten the exactly bassis of it

I thought kilowatts measured electrical power.
Sorry, I'm just a dumb Yank using the archaic Imperial system of weights & measures! :p

That'll be "I'm just a dumb Yank using the archaic US Standard system of weights & measures"... Imperial is different :D

Anyway, hp is the "Imperial" method. PS (pferdenstarke) is a metrication of that (1PS = 0.986hp). A Watt is the derived SI unit of power (Joules per second).

I believe you're right. Us Yanks took the Imperial system, improved it & made it OUR OWN

That's Right!

O.K...... I'm with you on the pherhedrenrenrahake..... But what is SI? And isn't "joules" also an electrical term?
Sorry, I'm just not making the connection.

Right... :D

The way science works is that all measures are based on 6 main units. Joules is the standard "S.I." unit of energy. Energy divided by time (Joules per second) is the definition of power. The Joulepersecond is a stupid word, so we use a derived unit - Watt - to describe it.

Joules measure any form of energy - so it can be electrical, but it can also apply to the amount of energy you get from eating foods (look on the back of any food packet - energy is given in calories and Joules).

YEAH!?!?!?! WELL.....MY HORSE IS ALOT STRONGER THAN YOUR STOOPID 40WATT LIGHTBULB!!!!!!!   eatingjewleswithsipersecondpharfegugen........:irked:

Ahh, don't mind me. I'll just look it up later in my Encylopedia........Americana!!💡

Man, look at what happens when I have a day off from work!

I prefer horsepower... :D That and lbft - torque in kgm is lame. :D

It's called a Watt after James Watt who was an important scientist back in the day to do with energy.
At least I think that's what my physics teacher told me, I only know to use it when needed, and not why it's called what it is lol

He was pretty much the founder of the electrical age. I remember this conversation I had with my housemate:

Me - I wonder who invented the lightbulb...
Chris - Watt.
Me - I wonder who invented the light bulb.
Chris - Watt!
Me - I wonder who invented THE LIGHT BULB.
Chris - Wa... oh you bastard...

:D

For something a little off topic, I hear that due to limited parking space Japanese car owners have to replace the entire engine after reaching 50,000 miles(km?). Is that true? They do this to make sure broken down vehicles don't clog traffic also which is a big problem in Japan.:D

yeah it's actually a law in japan I believe..That their engines OR their cars must be replaced after some distance like that...that is why there is such a high supply of japanese engines in america...but it's hard to get ahold of a NEW JDM engine...We get the engines that they had to remove....since we don't have "Distance laws"...We use em
