not to be rude or pushy or anything, but ive seen der alta's avatar for some time now and i was wondering if anyone else thinks it should be changed? this is only if he wants to though....

You know, I find it quite amazing how everyone knows everyone by their avatars. I always knew that it was Loudmusic when he had that avatar of what looked to be an AVS from Winamp. I always know it's M5Power when I saw that Joshua Tree avatar. I always knew that it was neon_duke when I saw his Powerbook avatar.

I use my Avatar to find my posts. Especially in a really long thread.
I know that "Red 'Bird" is where I should start reading from.
Plus, my first two avatars were of Cobras, and they got "jacked" pretty quickly. So I wanted something exclusive to me.

And no, I'm not going to change it. It's there and it's been there for a while. People see the avatar and know it's me. Should someone feel the need to copy it, I'll know they revere and idolize me, along with having no respect for other peoples property. Oh, and they'd show that have absolutely no originality.

Yeesh, it's his avatar, and he hasn't had it anywhere near the longest.

And like others have said, it's a good visual identifier, because it's easier to identify someone by a 100x100 pixel picture than 16 pixel tall black text.

I try to keep mine the same with minor changes... I'd had the "black square with rounded corners" look for several months now, and before then had a white box with rounded corners, and until the last few weeks, have always had an iBook in the middle. I remember after I had had the white avatar w/ iBook for several weeks, I changed it to something else, and I had several people tell me that they wanted the other one back. People like consistency.

I agree that Der Alta can have whatever avatar he wants to have. And true it is, I can instantly recognize Der Alta's posts from his avatar, even while scrolling down the page. Though other people have had the same avatars for a long time as well, you recognize some better than others. Must have something to do with the content of the posts that the particular person has made and the image you have of him/her.

I've had my avatar since... well, it was a long time ago!

And technically, I'm not allowed to have one nowadays -- I was a member when there were no strict avatar guidelines, and uploaded mine long before prerequisites for custom avatars were put in place.

In all honesty, my avatar is/was part of a long-past inside joke... it reminds me of the GTFers involved, though, and I like that.

As for AO changing his av: Keep the buff guy on GTP forever!!

If I ever need to find your posts I just look for the avatar(s) of those hideously ugly, absolutely useless things you call 'Macs'.






Anyway, I've only changed mine to support The All Blacks at the Rugby World Cup, after that it'll probably go back to the usual black Cobra frontal shot 👍
