Why are so many on this forum intent on being faux-moderators?

I myself am slightly curious as to why the members in this forum who learned English as a second language seem to be more proficient than the majority of English natives

Chalk it up to laziness? We all use a fair amount of slang specific to our native languages, but you won't notice this with the members who call English their secondary language, since they've only learnt it "properly". Factor in English-speaking countries' continued text-speak use (I've witnessed police, doctors, and professors all use it), and it's not that surprising, really. Someone who doesn't know the language will be more interested in getting their point across precisely, those that know it know how to be lazy about it too, sadly :)

HERE is a great example of a post that irks me. I'm going to be polite and not say anything, but just giving an example...

Just my 2p...as others have said if you see someone has created a duplicate thread or their punctuation, grammar or spelling is far below the accepted standard then I think it can be beneficial to point them in the right direction as long as you are very polite which should hopefully avoid causing offence. If the other person, or a previously uninvolved member, does take offence though and the thread starts to deteriorate into a argument then I think it's your responsibility to realise when this is happening...

Even if you had the best intentions it's not going to look good on you when a mod does see the thread and you've been in the middle of a flame war.

The GT5 Marketplace is a lost cause. Most of the lazy posters in there only come to this site to use the Marketplace - the quality GTP members who trade and post in other discussion threads tend to not be as lazy. The Marketplace is like an AUP-Grammar forest fire and trying to fix it by telling kids about the AUP is like trying to put that fire out with a squirt gun.

The thing that annoys me most about the GT5 Q&A Section is people posting duplicate threads or just a bunch of useless threads for the sake of being bored, but still, that will probably never stop because that Section is one of the first stops to someone new to GTP. I just learned to stop trying or maybe point one thread in the proper direction if no one else has posted in it.

For the rest of the site, I do think that posters on GTP should be expected to follow the AUP much more strictly and I think it's fair for other members of the site who aren't moderators to nudge someone in the right direction. Fortunately, I don't see grammar as much of an issue outside of the realms of the GT5 Forum. 👍

Quoted for truth.

Why are so many on this forum intent on being faux-moderators?

Because they disagree with a poster but have no valid argument, still feeling the need to say something in opposition it's a logical choice.

They usually have nothing to add to a conversation anyway so if it's really that bothersome just block them, you won't be missing anything ;)

I think you skipped the entire conversation here.

A lot of faux moderators seem to think that if they act like a moderator, then a little moderator badge will appear under their avatar...

 That's what I was thinking.

Na, I read the thread before posting as I always do. I think you might have just validated my point though

How so? I honestly don't see what is wrong with a few of us trying to help make this place above average when it comes to internet forums. Sure we're not full fledged moderators and if I see something I can't fix, I report it. A friendly reminder about grammar is not as big a deal as some of you make it out to be. (in my case capitals and punctuation) Don't like our posts? Then skip them. If you have an answer for the OP, then give it to them.

It's people like you that start the flame wars with your snide remarks. :dunce:

Edit: Here is another great example of a post that I would respond to with a friendly reminder. Better example than my last one.

On a differing note, I suppose there is a line between just giving friendly advice to people, and acting as mini-mods. Saying "I wouldn't use ~~~~~~~~" is acceptable is it not?

👍 Agreed!

By not liking my opinion and needing to respond in a negative way without any substance.

I don't see it making anything about the site above average.

You're not moderators at all.

R1600Turbo
and if I see something I can't fix

What have you 'fixed'?

As I recommended to the OP. I do skip your fake mod posts, can you recall me responding to one?

I did.

Except my 'snide remarks' are not snide, I had a point to make and I made it. It's not my fault you can't accept my opinions on the subject. Especially in a thread started specifically for it, should I be silenced then?

By not liking my opinion and needing to respond in a negative way....

Like your first comment wasn't?

I don't see it making anything about the site above average.

Posts that people can actually read is the first thing that comes to mind...

You're not moderators at all.

That's not what I meant.

What have you 'fixed'?

Helping someone correct their capitalization/punctuation mistakes is helping them "fix" the issue, which in my opinion is getting worse by the day.

As I recommended to the OP. I do skip your fake mod posts, can you recall me responding to one?

Wasn't speaking to you specifically.

Wasn't talking about this thread.

Except my 'snide remarks' are not snide, I had a point to make and I made it. It's not my fault you can't accept my opinions on the subject. Especially in a thread started specifically for it, should I be silenced then?

Carry on...

How is this contributing to the thread it was posted in or being helpful in anyway?

R1600Turbo
I think the biggest surprise here is that a new member actually searched and revived an old thread instead of posting a new one.

:

And no, I wasnt looking for examples. Something in current caught my eye.
