Why are so many PS3s dying?

Mainly it's the older fat PS3's getting the YLoD. Basically, the more advanced technology gets, the more likely it is to fail. That's why I still have my 1982 GCE Vectrex (those who watch Classic Game Room should know what that is) working in perfect condition, while people have a few year old PS3's breaking down due to overheating.

It's like a very old man (20, 60, and 80GB 'fat' PS3s) who had a heart attack (YLoD)after bedding (installing and playing) one of the sexiest women on the planet (GT5).

Or... sometimes hardware just fails -- often for some whatever inexplicable reason.

Hi, also it might be the case that, the said PS3 has not been in use for quiet a while, collecting dust somewhere, could also be a factor.

See official Sony site.

We are more to play then they expected. LOL

Currently the online services of Gran Turismo 5 (GT5) is experiencing some extreme online traffic congestion.

If you are experiencing the following symptoms, we recommend that you temporarily play GT5 without connecting the PlayStation 3 (PS3) to the network.

It could also be that with so many new posters coming on board or back on board after a long time away, we're simply seeing more reports of failure than before... and the failure rate is relatively static.

It's typically the 60 gig launch consoles that are to blame... and those are approaching a ripe old age at this point.

The problem is easily resolved, correct?

Just curious, Is that YLOD possible on a slim Playstation 3?

It isn't as prevalent on the slims as the phats due to the smaller chip size and, therefore, less heat output. That said, I'm sure it's still possible if it's full of dust and can't breathe properly.

I've got a fat 80 gb ps3. It's frozen up a few times but no ylod yet (touch wood). Although yesterday, when I switched it on, it didn't get past the screen where it says 'Gran Turismo 5 The Real Driving Simulator' at the beginning. So I quit the game by holding the PS button and then started again and it worked fine. Have to admit though, I was really nervous.

Thanks for your response, I hope mine doesn't break down any time soon!
