Why are there now off-track shortcut penalties in seasonals?

Hopped onto GT5 since I had a few hours free from college work this afternoon. Took my 2J into the new "Real Circuit Tours" (or whatever) seasonal. I was doing fairly well, until I got to the end of the back straight of Spa Francorchamps. I usually dive off-track and drive on the rumble strips (I don't know why, I just do) and as soon as my car left the track, I received a 10-second penalty. I was barely crawling with my throttle disabled. I got a few other penalties during the race, all for going "off-track." Why is this? There didn't used to be penalties. That's part of what made the game fun, being able to goof off a little bit while driving. I don't really understand why they did this. Any insight into this would be much appreciated.

Because you are supposed to stay on the track :odd:

Some of the penalties are stupid though. Maybe the Ai brakes to early and you slam into it (the 2J doesn't have brake lights), or you need to pass an Ai with no room on either side. Maybe use a runoff to overtake an Ai and you get a penalty.

I remember PD released a seasonal events in Le Da Sarthe (With Chicanes) and I swear I lowered my car PP so I get more money and I just remember myself cutting those chicanes getting like 4 second lead or something close to that so I wouldn't be suprised if PD introduced off-track penalties.

@Gerarghini:

:sigh: really mature picture you've got there. That's really cool.

OT: I think this may be a good thing. Less money for us and a more difficult race, but it:
A) Requires a bit more attention in the otherwise dull rabbit chase.
B) Keeps things a bit closer to real life.

So, I won't complain.

Couldn't have said it any better my self.

Also, like TwisyDrift said, it's probably to keep people from cheating.

I'm all for it, i think penalties for aggressive ungentlemanly racing and cheating are spot on. 👍

To prevent people using AI as brakes and cutting entire corners? (Le sarte's Mulsanne chicanes or Dunlop chicanes anyone?)

It's a bit militarian about what it considers a cut corner compared to time trials but it's a system that works. It stops people driving like idiots.

With all the debate about SRF it's nice to see at least some semblance of "Expert" coming back into seasonals.

I agree with the penalties, don't see why anyone but the most exuberant of corner cutters wouldn't agree. However, I think rather than the penalty system they should just update the tracks and put some barricades up at vulnerable corners and stop it at the source.

I don't agree with this.

I think the way Forza handles corner cutting is superior, IE causing cars to dramatically slow down so there is literally no situation where corner cutting is faster 👍

It's more subtle and doesn't ruin the aesthetics :)

Doesn't say much. It's offline. Do what you want.

Also, like TwisyDrift said, it's probably to keep people from cheating.

You can't cheat offline anyway. This is just another example of a developer trying to keep a game from being too fun.

And to top it off, the penalty system is broken anyway, at least it is if it's the same one they use online.

Forza stick grass...

It's more subtle

There is nothing subtle about going a tiny bit deeper into a corner to avoid contact with a close car only to have magnets from Mario Kart grind you car to a halt. Sticky grass and penalties go together in the garbage bin IMO. Track barrier should not be considered either for the sake of accuracy.

I just don't see the aesthetic quality of a gravel pit, personally just a tiny barrier around the corner wouldn't hurt it too much. I will take your word about Forza though as I have not played it, so the system you mentioned might also be better as you say. 👍

When I say subtle, I am referring to aestetics.

Foam barricades that are made of concrete when you hit them aren't subtle either

I'm not saying that method is perfect, but I'd prefer it over barricades or invisible walls.

Because there aren't gravel pits in real life. That would just be absurd.

The penalty system is imperfect but I think it's a good idea to have penalties on Seasonals, along with all aids being optional. I've raced with a lot of guys doing their "first time" online over the last couple of years and almost always it's with a flood of, " I used to be able to do that with AI's" sort of thing. If you can just smash and bash your way to the front and drive anywhere on the circuit it's doesn't train anyone to be a good driver, nor to respect the rules of the game, track boundaries, other drivers etc.

This sums up the way I feel. I'm all for making the game more realistic as long as there are options that make it accessible to the casual racer. This is still a console game that doesn't require a membership the last time I checked.

This also sounds like they have or are slowly eliminating grinding the seasonals for money. An odd decision considering the amount of people that do this.

I'm all for penalties. Since we aren't going to get more skilled AI or proper chassis damage for leaving the track, at least it makes people run the track as laid out.

Track barrier should not be considered either for the sake of accuracy.

So one should be able to slam into ai cars, fly off track and rim ride corners with no effect on performance for the sake of...umm...accuracy? Agree with penalties or not, how they are handled or if they should even be included is one thing, but using accuracy as an excuse is a lost cause!

Completely irrelevant from the questionable usage of penalties as a blanket against poor AI (and how out of whack the application tends to be for them anyway), so long as SRF is forced on in the Seasonals when there is no reason whatsoever for it to be, there is no point to having penalties.

Barriers that you can't disable are inaccurate. Allowing you to ram and cut lets you choose to be accurate or not. In fact, you could be more accurate before the nonsense penalties because you could choose to do something realistic, like stop and go, rather than becoming a ghostly road block. Additionally, there could be some sanity to penalties so that someone ramming into you from behind does not end up being a strike against you.

So yes, lack of penalties are superior to barriers.

Not really. Especially when GT5's penalty system is so terrible.

And SRF is forced on?

PD has lost it.

Penalties are fine, I like them, I use them online all the time. Stops people cutting corners, braking using other cars, etc, etc, all listed above. What I don't think has been mentioned though, is the difference between offline and online. Online, you can at least set the penalties to 'weak', which in my opinion is perfectly acceptable. You can clip corners and you can bump each other, but if you really take the piss, you get penalised. They should probably adopt the 'weak' penalties for Seasonal Events, or perhaps give us the option to choose. I know PDiddy isn't in the habit of giving us choice, (F)SRF anyone??

This is what baffles me. Why have track penalties yet have SRF forced on? Let's make our players respect the track but make them use a completely unrealistic aid!

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Agreed. Penalties are what made the rally challenge so infuriating for me.

Which is why I won't be playing the new seasonals anymore. It seems very draconian to set penalties for offline races.

Could be worse, imagine if we had the penalty system from F1 2012!!
Penalties are there to stop you from thinking your amazing because you finish about a week in front of the AI who stick to the track whilst your off roading.

I do think some of the penalties when you nudge an AI car are a bit harsh, but it promotes clean racing, which will make you many, many friends online.

It's a bit rich to tout "realism" in a game which has no clutch simulation, 80% of the cars don't have interiors, and you can get 500+ HP out of an STI.

This is by far an invalid argument.

If the game isn't realistic, then you can't get onto them every time they fix something to bring it one step closer. No game is 100% realistic at this point and no game will be for a long time.

Gran Turismo has some large faults against its realism, I'm not arguing that. But it's still one of the most "realistic simulator" console games available right now.

To me its just a game with cars, i enjoy smashing AI's. As a game however, gt5 has the responsibility to mix things up. I never race online, so I could care less if people learn to race correctly. If u are in a room that everything goes , then get out or race by those standards.

Simply put ... it will make you a better driver by having these in the game. It will make you tactical, not a cheater.

Going off topic here.....

When doing seasonal events when your tyres touch the grass/sand does it suck you car? If it doesn`t I would love to see it get implemented so drivers would be extra careful
