why did PD map the stars?

Mapping the stars probably didn't take them long. But recreating the moon and moon rover was surely a waste of time.

Not really. They already had a pretty accurate moon model, and the physics were only a math problem away from the engine they already have. and the rover got modelled while they were at GM (they have the rights to the car and were showcasing it to PD on a tour/meeting) from the interview, I'd say it was a convenient "hey, thats cool, lets add it" thing. Kaz didnt even hint toward any hard work going into it.

The moon rover. Yes its cool. Its got an engine and 4 wheels..so qualifies..but its purpose here is just novelty.
Im no astronomer, but dont you guys think driving and jumping around on the moon the way GT portrays it would most likely send youinto orbit..unrealistic in theory?
Anyway, the rover will get old Real quick. If it hasnt already. After that its just a useless feature in the game taking up space.

The X1 was a better novelty item. It definitely had more uses, was equally uncomparable, had better longevity.
And it really showed PDs dedication to pushing the boundaries of physics and creating futuristic, yet believable concepts.

Moon rover is just boring...imo. Couldve done all that on a rally track with a diminished gravity setting..And we'd have a blast trying out the 1200 cars with low gravity gliding.. That could add a whole new type of race here. lol...im going too far.

Kaz appreciates the accuracy and perfection in the design and cyclical events found in nature "smooth transition of day and night/night into day" the "rotation of the world" and its miniscule role within the Universe created by The "Grand designer & Simulator" of all things way before we even surfaced on it and started shaping things around us.( to now where we're simulating these within virtual worlds )

We within our limited capacity actively try and design beautiful objects and designs taking inspiration from the naturally created things around us.."GoldenRatio/bionics/colours" Car designers are heavily invested in this area.

Kaz wants you ponder, and think about the beauty in every form, from Racing around timed cyclical laps with lush backdrops and skies from different parts of this habitable piece of rock we call Earth.. even then..it only forms a part of what he is directing you to.. Kaz has a Gran Vision which he is sharing with us..which Ultimately I hope will lead you to the "Great Fashioner" himself.

It’s mostly the ears that drives the sound to our brains, not the eyes.;)

Having realistic milky way coordinates doesn't involve hiring the MIT’s hall of fame. It is (caricaturatly) a simple equation organizing the rotation of a spherical texture mapping.

Integrating a solid new sound engine is a lot more demanding thing. They are aware of the flaws, they are working on it, and will eventually succeed in integrating it on a relatively limited and aging platform.👍
Let me see ...
If I don't have sound, I can still driver the car.
If I don't have eyes ... that will be a problem.

If you got my point.

We're all made of stars!

Seriously though, i've no idea. Just one of those quirks you don't get in Western developed games!

Yeah but I'd take the "western" sound, damage and AI models over PD's pointless quirks any day. Don't get me wrong it looks cool, but it is so low on the priority list for a racing game it's not funny.

Kaz says he wants to simulate everything but he hasn't even managed to simulate the core feature of the game: the cars! No realistic sound, damage, interiors... This is a driving simulator isn't it??

If GT didn't have accurate star maps, driving missions on the moon, and old random cars from a ton of different racing series I would have picked up something like NFS and Grid etc...

The reason I personally like GT is because you can appreciate driving from so many different perspectives, it wouldn't be GT without all those quirks and 40 variations of the same car..

I suppose because they are just that little bit different from most mainstream developers who make racing games. I think it's a very interesting addition.

Whats the point of PD accurately mapping the sky and stars?
sure its pretty, but what does it have to do with a car racing game?

I understand your frustration with some of the persistent issues in the series, but I think you are vilifying the starry sky unfairly. I doubt it takes away from any aspect of the game.

On a personal note I'd love a modern racing game that completely drops textures in favour of super-fast frame rates, complex sound generation and 50+ on track opponents with human-like AI. But that would look something like this much loved relic, and I'd probably be the only one who'd buy it..

Racing games sure have come a long way. Some of y'all youngsters have no idea :dopey:

It was probably added late in development. I don't think Kaz walked into the first GT6 meeting and wrote "STARS" on the whiteboard.

I remember when this came out in the arcades!
It was the most advanced racer out and it was "real life good" lol

Maybe PD just misinterpreted the whole idea being watching a "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car"...

Incidentally, I was trying to use the stars to (roughly) locate Apricot Hill... Ursa Major points straight to the North Star (Polaris), and at Apricot Hill, it appears that Polaris is almost on the horizon, which would put Apricot Hill roughly on the equator - which means that Apricot Hill is either in South America, central Africa, or Indonesia... or in the Ocean. Maybe I'm reading too much into this...

At first I didn't really put much thought into this idea about the sky. When I watched the trailer for it I thought it was very cool. Again I didn't really put much thought to how it would play out in the game.
To be honest I think it is a great feature that really does add to the night racing. I still remember the first time I visioned it. I was on bathurst coming out of the Quarry heading up to The Cutting it was a time change race. The way the sky looked in the background really did make the race something I will not forget for a long time. The same is true on the feeling I get when I do the 3 lap race at LeMans. Very nice touch to add to the realism of time changing races.

haha, i was waiting for someone with some astronomical knowledge to chime in.
imagine, you figure out the gps location, goto google maps and find deepforest in mongolia...lol

You'd still need a lot more thrust and momentum to go into Moon orbit, far more than the ol' Rover could muster.

I have been wanting to make this comment for a while now, but resisted in fear of being called 'Grandad'.

Now the floodgates are open, I'd like to wholeheartedly agree.

Some of the comments around here have been a little ridiculous of late, with heart wrenching tales of tearing artificats and unmodelled dashboards. Wake up and smell the coffee kids, GT6 looks amazing.

A few of us are alot older, sure, been through the atari, commodore era
Yes i agree, gt6 is great, better than its predecessors in every way.
But I want it to be the best there is, since im a loyal fan.

And since its a driving game, im hoping PD gives the actual driving experience a higher priority than all other details.

We complain, and it might seem ungrateful. I can see that. But if PD does read these forums theyll know what their fans actually want from the game. Theres no harm to this, only benefits.
