Why do Drifters have odd Wheel colors?

I always notice drift cars with a good colored paint and then colored rims that don't match the call at all making the car itself kinda look bad. (no offense)

So why do drifters do this? Is it like a trend or soemthing?

What looks bad to you may not look bad to others. Everyone has there own style and taste.

yeah i figured as much as that :) My friends are the ones that actually got me thinking about it though. I didn't even really notice it till they brought it up.

But like pink car with idk lime green wheels, idk how thats attractive, but everyone has there opinions :)

After 2 years looking to the "Show your Drifting Cars" thread, i noticed that things are changing. Slowly people are stoping to mix strong collors and going back to the basics, trying to replicate more realism to their cars.

Like i said already in that thread:
"The classic is the new excentric".

I'm thinking it's to draw attention. Face it, you made this thread about why they do it, they've accomplished their mission .

You always got that one "hot shot" that wants to stand out and be noticed, they don't care if the colours necessarily match, it's about what's gonna draw attention and get them noticed.

My favourite colour is matte white for the car and either matte black, gun metal, isotope green or matte white.

All comes down to personal preference :sly:

Hmm. Ok these reasons make a lot more sense now. I thought it was mainly because they just liked the colors together but using it to draw attention seems like a lot better exuce

:)

Actualy this happens following what can be seen in the Formula D and such competitions around the world. It makes a lot more sense if it was possible to edit livery, cose without vynils all we can get is generic looks. Thats why the back to the original / realistic looking is a new trend.

Uhh I would not give total credit to formula d on the wheel issue. Look at you local car scene you are bound to see pink wheels somewhere.....

Because #YOLO

HAters be tots jelly of dem pink rimmys, brah.

Honestly, I think it's an attempt to draw attention to their car. You're obviously going to look twice at the car that catches your eye running fluorescent pink rims. Personally, I prefer sleeper/classic style cars over flamboyant paint jobs.

In regards to the "bright colours" for rims...if you look at any action sport over the last few years (skateboarding, snowboarding, bmx, drifting, etc etc), really bright colours have been very popular (similar to late 80's, early 90's). The car scene in general, but especially JDM/EUDM "tuner scene" has really taken the whole "bright colours" idea and ran with it.

Formula D, and D1 cars both tend to be painted really bright colours, because that's what's popular right now. I'm on my phone right now, so cant be bothered to post a pic...but someone should post a pic of Ryan Tuerck's Retaks Silvia...that's a bright car if I've ever seen one. Whether or not pro drifters are soully responsible for popularizing bright colours or not I don't know...but they're part of the reason the popularity of that style has grown.

In GT5, I think a lot of people use bright rims on their cars both to sort of mimic the popular styles of the day, but also because rims are one of the only way to add your own personal flare to your car (too bad we aren't allowed 10 pieces of flare :sly:). I can gaurentee you that if there was a livery editor in the game, you would see a lot more very brightly and crazily painted cars...not just rims.

Those wheels on the pictures you guys posted match the car though. fore example for first car i think is a GT-R (idk cant tell) But sponser and orange stripe match the wheels.

I guess since GT5 doesnt have much sponcered cars though i can see were people are trying to replicate. I never noticed the colored wheels on D1 cars other than on the monster mustang. I guess ill have to pay more attention

People like their cars to have an "obnoxious and in your face" look while drifting.

While a lot of their road racing cars may not be like that.

Yeah, the GT-R which was Robbie Nishida's. And the Monster Mustang is a Formula Drift car.

Here's an actual picture of it from this season:

Most pro drifting cars i see, has well thought color combinations of body/rim paint. Most of them are complementary colors which seem very pleasant to a viewers eyes. Like in Eric's example the red-violet of the body and the yellow-green of the rims are opposite on the wheel of colors.

As you see colorful don't have to be odd at all. ;)

I think it's a 'drift style' kinda thing. Like people have posted in this thread, a lot of drift cars have brightly coloured wheels. Having a strange colour makes you look different and interesting, especially when sideways.

I totaly agree on that. This visual trend doesn´t started in the motorsport´s scenario, for sure. And even before the action sports, we could see this comeback in the vanguard culture, since maybe the half of the 00´s decade.

We also can not forget of that rule of the 20 years. Right now, 2012, the vanguard culture (designs, music, fashion) are drinking from 1992 or any time near to it. Some specialists denies that these 20 years rule stills clear as in past, some people says that now is 15 years instead 20.

Anyways, same as the last decade was too inspired in the 80s, now the 90s is the new thing. We gotta remember about the grunge, the MTV in the 90s, the fuzzy combination of elements, the tokusatsu references, the retro JDM trends from the 90s and so on...

I guess that will be the next step, in general. At least for drifting.
