Why does AI insert a white background?

Anytime I try and export a jpg or png file, and then load it into Illustrator and auto trace it, all of a sudden any transparent areas are filled with white. It also means any black and white logos are either on a white square, or black and transparent. Why is this and (how) can I stop it?

Having not used AI, it probably defaults to a non-transparent background when importing a non-transparent image such as a JPG and many PNGs. In Inkscape you can go to "Document Properties" and click on the "checkerboard background" that you see if transparent images. You can then select the background layer, which is usually just the imported image in what I have done, and delete it. Auto-tracing may add a background because of the import but I would look for a similar option in AI.

EDIT: This clip seems promising but probably depends on your version.

I switch to transparent background. Image is perfect. I trace it. The trace inserts a white background onto the artboard around the logo. Unless I check the ignore white box. Which is fine, unless of course there is white in the logo. When Im lef with either the white box or a transparency in the white bits of the logo. Its completely illlgical captain.

Edit: I can prob try that, but it sounds like thats just for a ong file and not a traced svg file.
