Why Gran Turismo 7’s Graphics Look So Different From Other Games

I dont think their is a game that capture as photorealistic graphics as gt7, and the car details is insane. I would say ac evo is the first to even come close to that.

The day graphics are great, but the night is absolutely ruined for me with the absolute nonsense that is the "headlight overlap" mechanism that supposedly is making your headlight take priority over AI headlight if their path have to be crossed, but in the case where your headlights hits the back of a car, the front area of the AI car is not lit anymore and it results in complete darkness. And this is 1 non realistic 2 ruins everything because you can't see anymore there is no more light ahead to show you where you are going.

And after years of release this isn't fixed. It makes mount panorama or the nurb completely undrivable for me because I can't follow closely a car more than 1 second to prepare an overtake without being covered in full darkness because my headlight are hitting the back of the car

I mean… there’s a few things that don’t look right. The trees growing through the barriers at Le Mans, the awful pop in
Circuit de la Sarthe needs a complete rebuild for GT8 as it is looking very dated with it's surrounding scenery being almost nonexistent for about two-thirds of the lap. Add in the update corners and it is long overdue some love.

Yeah I think it’s possibly the oldest real track that they have, maybe Suzuka. It’s definitely older than 2015 as that looks like the features they have i.e. the KFC at Hunaudières

It looks too clean, match that to **** physics, i played it once and will never play it again. There has to be a level of driving physics and FFBthat match decent enough graphics -- that gives the best immersion. So for that AC with CSP and pure wins it for me, it is still better than ACC and AC EVO, AMS2, LMU, RF2, iracing, Forza and Gran Turismo for overall immersion. Each game OfCourse has there own merits, and GT7s only merit is unrealistically overly clean graphics, that still look like a game. On a (good) PC maybe....on PS5 AC is nowhere near GT7.

They've done an amazing job. However, the most realistic lighting in any game depends on what they were trying to simulate. The article says it simulates the human eye but they must have mixed their words up with "camera" because GT simulates cameras that have really poor HDR externally well. I don't want to play like I'm looking through a camera though. Many here will know exactly what my complaint is. Even in the image in the article there's a good example, the cockpit of the car should not be this dark in a tin top let alone a toplesss car. This is not how this scenario would look with the human eye which they're apparently simulating but rather a low spec camera. This is the only thing graphially they need to improve for me. I find it extremely bizarre that they talk this bit up whilst not actually doing what they claim.View attachment 1476484
Is the screenshot taken on PS5? They improved cockpit lightning for PS5 Pro:

For some unknown reason severe rain and thick overcasts in the Gran Turismo series always had that menacing feel to me where rarely other games cause me that.

Why do AC players have the urge to tell anyone they think their game looks amazing if you put 2000 mods in it? No one here even talked about AC.
Adding cinematic effects won't make graphics good btw.

Its funny, Friday I was on here comparing GT's graphics to Forza's to see if GT REALLY looked better. I came to the conclusion it was the "lighting". I guess "Tone Mapping" I was the phrase I was looking for. Great job!
Yea, pretty much this. For the past 10-20 years, my position has always been that GT looks better than Forza, or pretty much any other racing game I've experienced, and I guess it's this. Everything else looks flat to me. That's the best way I can describe it. It's so obvious that I don't know how people argue otherwise, but I guess it could also be related to a persons TV setup or how their eyes perceive things in the real world. Like people having color blindness.

Forza always looked like a "video game" or toy cars to me.. Something along those lines. Nothing in the PC realm has come close either as they tend to focus on other aspects of their games.

I haven't played GT7 in a few months, but I was messing with it yesterday and every time I do, at some point, I just stare at a car at the garage screen and am blown away.

Funny thing is I am on a PS4 slim, and I do see the brake lights on all cars in the orange color mentioned in article "The older system could sometimes cause “hue twisting”, where highly saturated colors would shift their appearance under bright light (for example, red brake lights could appear orange)."
can someone explain why?

Don't know if it's my eyes or my TV, but GT7 photos look worse (especially in Scapes) than GT Sport. I hate the way the tires look out of focus and blurry and "muddy" in GT7 photos.

Gameplay graphics, however, look the best they've ever have.

While I do think GT7's biggest graphical complaint has been its overly *clean*look... I don't see how a game which is usually regarded as the best looking racing game also has to have the best physics available.

GT has consistently been getting better with its physics each game but realistically it will likely never be the best sim in that regard. GT seems to have always pushed as close to reality without it getting in the way of accessibility and pickup and play enjoyment. I personally like that balanced approach.

its also odd to me you complain that the physics and graphics do not match while then complaining about the graphics and the physics.

...because they dont graphically match the physics, & that physically doesnt match with the graphics.
i thought this was obvious.. 🤷‍♂️ :D

So they should make the game purposely look less realistic because they are not aiming to be the best physics on the market?

Is that not due to ACC physics taking most of the power? GT goes for graphics rather than physics?
No, it's because AC is an indie game made by 20 people in a garage and GT is a AAA first party game. The fact that AC competes on graphics at all is crazy.

Bone stock AC can’t hold a candle to GT, you have to modify the living daylights out of AC to make it look good and have a mega pc

AC isn’t an indie game and modern hardware and rendering algorithms are commonly available. AC has nothing to write home about for graphics and deserves no praise either for that. It deserves praise for a good handling model and mod support on PC, but not graphics.

Whilst there can be a good level of realism in GT7 it's too often dull and grey. If that's reality give me some spice. The best game for me that seemed real but also beautiful was Red Dead 2.

first one started development with around 4 people and 30k euros. By the end of development it had around 40 people working on the game.

GT7 had hundreds of people working on it.

No one should be comparing GT7 with anything other than console games, a PC is an entirely different planet. You've got near unlimited horsepower, customisation and what not to make a game look an dplay great. It's also a massive freaking headache compared to a plug and play console. On console, GT7 looks amazing, ACC looks like it was made 15 years ago.

I can see how that can confuse a certain type of person. "It looks real so it must be real.."👀

Overall GT7 really looks fantastic and pretty "realistic".

But nothing's perfect, so here are a few things I hope the next iteration will achieve/implement to make it even better and more realistic:

1: Dirt/Rain/Snow effects on the car.
This is probably where GT7 looks least realistic. Your car shouldn't look like new after a race. And when driving in the wet in cockpit view, especially when driving behind other cars, there should be a lot more impact on visibility. I want my windscreen dirty and the wipers smearing the dirt, not completely removing it. I would even go further and say that insects should be a thing. (Has any game done this yet?)

2: Make the colors a bit less saturated and the glare effects maybe less exaggerated.
