"Why Nerds Are Unpopular"

i can't imagine a school with more than 500 kids, imagine having them all in one building:scared: it's so crowded in the large rec centre with 300 kids

Omins and Casio, how many kids per class? we have 20-30 (24 in our class i think) per class, and 24 per class is too much
 
20 kids. lol. I've had classes with 40+ kids. No fun. Middle School (6-8) is the worst when it comes to population density (kids per classroom). It's no wonder there's such a gap that's created with the culturally literate and illiterate. 20 kids in a classroom may learn a lesson, but not all of them will know the background information to understand the lesson, and if the teacher teaches the background information, some kids still won't get it. So, assuming that scenario, only half the class would understand the face value of a lesson, and maybe only a quarter or a third will truly understand what is being taught. I find that to be one of the bigger flaws in our school system. By the time we're in high school, half of the student population is totally air headed, and a quarter of that is drop-out material.

Cypress Bay High School, the 5,000 kid school, is a HUGE campus. All of our schools are campuses; I've never been to a school with just one building.

Basically, the story behind it is that there's this new(er) city for rich folks and snowbirds called Weston, and, it's way out west on the edge of the everglades. So, being rich and stuff, the city voted to build a new school for the area instead of having everyone bussed or driven all the way across creaton as more and more families with kids moved into the city. So, it's the city's only public school, and it's hugely populated, hugely huge, and backed by lots and lots of money.

My stuff doesn't really fit into a category. My school may not be huge - 1500 students, Years 7-12. Since it's Israel (Including "End-of-the-world" feel), we don't have advanced classifications, and we don't have any school-organized sports which could rank people.

I'm considered a Nerd/Weirdo. I'm not sure, but that's my guess. I don't study, and I can't concentrate, outside school, on learning. I still get 100s at the tests (This year, I've dropped a point or two due to not-paying-attention to mistakes). However, that's not what makes me unpopular. It's not that I'm totally a totally unpopular outcast - I've got a few close friends. But I've got too many enemies, partly because I don't give a damn about them, partly because of my appearance, partly because I don't know. Actually, I've got some ideas about why - Long hair, Weird music-preferences (Jazz, '60s-'70s Rock, Blues).
However, the main thing seperating groups is just the "kind" of people - one (Me in there) includes quite a few who excelin classes, but get along good with each other. Some are (Dunno the name), I guess, what would be "Footballer" in the US - they have friends across the classes, all together for one purpose - to make others miserable. They're usually pretty bad in classes. Others are ultra-outcasts. Nobody really likes them, because they lack any kind of social skill or tact. They're not smart, they just exist.
I take Physics and Advanced Physics/Computer-calculations (MatLab and stuff). I tried to take a course that stuffs 5 years of math into 2 years, but failed the end-of-year test. I'm considered a nerd by some, because of those classes. However, I have buddies and friends from all groups, because I'm not casting myself out. For every friend I have, I have 5 enemies - people who don't even know me, recognize me by name because I'm "That long-haired freak". I'm in a weird position, because even some from my "group" are pretty unfriendly to me. I dunno, I guess I'll repay them when I get some well-paying advances-physics job and they only get a high-tech job.
 
why do you suppose that people pick on nerds so much? Because were interested in science, and don't have the latest "south pole" underwear, doesn't mean we sit home and study all day. I don't see why people insist that if you get good grades, or you are smart that you suck at everything else..
It saddens me, to think that some "idiot"(comparitively) thinks I am a book whore, and don't have any athletic, or "cool" fun. :grumpy:
I dont mind that they don't hang out with me, I am glad but something about nerds they just don't like, or somethinn has taught them that we can't/don't do anything cool, but they don't know what they're talking about.
openly picking on us nerds, getting "respect" for disrespect, what makes them hate us...

I thought it was cool to be a nerd? I was a fairly popular kid in High School, and still am for the most part today despite my love for all things Star Wars, LOTR, Marvel Comics, videogames, electronics, etc.

...Maybe it just depends on your approach to the whole thing, but I don't think I've ever really been called-out on the grounds of being a nerd. That being said, there were quite a few kids who were in High School, at work, and even in college today. I think it likely depends, as mentioned before, as to how you go about it.

I'm proud of my nerdyness, and often make fun of myself with it. Transformers and Spider-Man have been hot-topics with me as of late, and I love sporting my t-shirts that go with them. I've never been afraid to quite Star Wars or Star Trek at work, and I'll even make jokes about it when I do.

I dunno. There are the social nerds, and then there are the anti-social nerds, and I think that may be where the problem comes from. I dunno. There isn't anything wrong with being a nerd, as its all about how you go through it...
 
People who do that are insecure, it makes them feel better about themselves. Just dont let it get to you and be who you are. Dont change to try to get people to like you. I never really noticed bullies that much when I was in school.

Very true. When I was at school I was just average at most subjects except history and P.E. The group that I was with were the same but we never really picked on nerds. There were the people in other groups who to be honest came from disadvantaged areas and were notorious for generally bullying everyone. I left school seven years ago and when I see those people now it couldn't be any more different.
 
I've always been a nerd. I play PS2 and computer all day, I used to write up stories, liked watching pretty nerdy T.V. shows, was obsessed with learning all about the Mafia as a kid, etc. But I still managed to get along with practically everyone in my grade at school.

YSSMAN has it right. It's how you approach it. You have to have thick skin, a decent sense of humour and be able to make fun of yourself a little, as well. It's mostly about your personality. If you crawl into a hole or get your back up when someone rags on you a bit, then you're asking for more. If you take it with a grain of salt, laugh it off and move on, and not be so anti-social, then you're going to be fine.

But at the end of the day, anyone who gets on your back all the time and upsets you isn't really someone worth worrying about. Laugh it off and move on, and worry about your real friends.

Correct. Also, when you're in school, popularity is everything, so you're more inclined to be upset about it when someone is condescending towards you. But it doesn't actually matter a damn now, because schoolkids are all about the potential, and nothing about the delivery. When you're out in the real world, it's more about what you can deliver than whether you're good at ballgames.

I may just be an ass (which is probably true), but I'll make fun of people for NOT being nerds. I pick on my girlfriends all the time for never seeing any of the Star Wars or LOTR movies, as if they are culturally inept beings who have missed out on a huge cultural phenomenon. When other kids would attempt to make fun of me or my friends for liking Star Wars or whatever, all you would have to do is insert a quip about how they've probably seen it, probably liked it, etc and then parallel their tastes for other crap-tastic films, music, movies, television to our own.

What it comes down to is that everyone is a geek/nerd to some extent. You could be the coolest kid in school, but you may have a secret love for Legos and maybe some kind of electronic lust that only DL.TV can satisfy.

We've all got our own little quirks. Its just a matter of accepting them as your own, and using them to your advantage.

I completely agree. Occasionally my wife will see me watching some sci-fi movie or playing some video game annd make some comment about me being a nerd and how cute it is. I usually just come back with, "And you like The Bachelor and Dancing with the Stars. I love how trendy you are."

Nothing confounds me more than seeing some Britney Spears wannabe make fun of some guy for liking a 20-year-old classic space opera. I wonder if she is even aware that she acts the same way, but at least the nerd is into something that actually has some form of lasting effect on society over time.

In reality trendy and nerdy are the same things, it is just one defines something that is socially popular. Trust me, I put in more time studying for my fantasy football team than I ever did for my college classes. Whether I am reading a video game magazine or a fantasy football magazine will determine who comes up and makes a comment to me. Whichever it is the conversation is very similar.

I think that's sometimes because the some of the straight A students don't have the people/job skills required. For example, I have a friend who studied all day, got almost perfect marks in school, yet has trouble getting a job. This is because she's 19 and has never been employed. Also, she gets very nervous in interviews, isn't comfortable around people and places she doesn't know, because she's spent 95% of her time devoted to school.
 
I seriously disagree with the whole intelligent=unpopular theory. There were plenty of stupid nerds at my school. I think the formula should be more like: painful to look at + unpleasant smell + creepy/no personality = unpopular. You can still be a nerd and have plenty of friends.

Google tells me the original nerd was created by Dr. Seuss.. I found that interesting =)

nerds arent necessarily smart, they're just socially inept. The whole stereotype comes about that they have no friends, so they devote their free time to studying. The nerds I knew in high school devoted their free time to "LAN" parties, so all they had were the few they joined with and bawls. They had friends, just no sex.

Now what about geeks? I always took a geek as someone who wasnt necessarily socially inept or smart, but they knew a lot about a particular fictional subject, (i.e. star wars, star trek, comic books). I guess the above described gamer could fit this description.
 
I didn't think the word "nerd" had anything to do with looks or popularity or social ability. I thought it was all about unusually strong interests in things. Like people that read books nonstop or tinker with cars 24/7 or game on computers like its nobody's business. Obviously social hardships could stem from deep passions like that, but it's the interest that causes the other problems.

The theory is bull****. Me who gets C--Fs ranges from slightly popular--most hated kid in the school. My friends who get straight As are all very very popular.
 
Omnis is a nerd. Man, he was trying to convince me that the stuff he listens to, like that Barman guy, is the greatest rap to ever hit the planet. If you think making two trips to a dictionary just to understand a single line of the rap is cool then I guess it's pretty badass.

A few points:

- I don't think being socially inept has much to do with it. Granted, they don't have the same social skills as everyone else, but they certainly function just as normal as anyone else in society.

Example: Sometimes when I grab things at the supermarket I'll say "YOINK!" just for the hell of it. Sure, it makes me look like a weirdo, and certainly demonstrates my strange social skills, but does that make me a nerd because I have to entertain myself at the store?​

- Hey! Sex doesn't make the man! Some of us are just choosing to wait... I new plenty of nerds in high school that were having stupid amounts of sex. But that may have been because they were A) knocking-up the slutty girls or B) knocking up the slutty nerd girls...

BTW: One of my friends thinks that I'd be a lot less nerdy/geeky if I got rid of my "sexual frustration." Whatever that means...

- I always thought Geeks and Nerds went together hand-in-hand, and although have slight differences, are still one in the same. Although Nerds may be a bit more apt in math and science and the whatnot, generally speaking they share the same interest as Geeks in technology and sci-fi, and whatnot.

...And I would agree that the Gamer category certainly is the completion of the Tri-Force here. They're all interconnected in some way, but the good news is that its kinda cool to be a nerd/geek/gamer these days...
