The guy was absolutely in tears last season, and he was in tears at Monza this season. Yeah, he's got the finger and is a shoo-in for the WDC, but racing means everything to the guy and he's been humble about it. I've got no problems with him, go on then, Seb!

I have no problem at all with him, it's the dominance of Red Bull at the moment which is killing the sport for me. Don't get me wrong I love to watch middle of the pack battles going on, but I would like to see other teams competing at the front. Notice how Vettel gets hardly any coverage during the race because he has nobody to compete with?

That about sums it even Ayrton had compitition.

Sebastian Vettel will be one of those all-time greats. I started watching F1 last year, and Vettel seemed like the underdog. He didn't know he would be the youngest driver to be an F1 World Champion until he led the points standings for the first time ever at the end of the final race in Abu Dhabi last year. Now, I don't care that he is the fastest driver in practice and qualifying and the race, because I watched him get better and better all last season. Sebastian Vettel is easily my favorite driver.

This. Although Vettel is my favorite driver, it does become annoying when there is no one with a car good enough to compete with him (well except Webber, who clearly is not doing well).

However, saying that he wins only due to his car is a massive error of judgement:

That's funny, he seems to be the least-hated world champ in recent memory.

After he clinches his title, and starts winning more races next year, I'm sure people we grow weary of the the same-old, same-old. Virtually every driver who's dominant in any motorsport gets a little hatred in return for just being so good; there's always a faction of fans against Sebastien Leob in WRC or Jimmy Johnson in NASCAR. And was it that long ago that Michael Schumacher was usually tipped to win everything, at any time or place? I think there's just a little more apathy lately, because most of our regulars in the F1 forum feel he's really a shoo-in to win.

People were annoyed when Senna, Schumacher, Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, et cetera did all the winning in their years. I'm sure this sort of attitude dates back to when the Silver Arrows were dominant in the European Championship (although, there were valid reasons to Hate Them back in those days), a later when Alfa Romeo, then Ferrari won everything after WWII ended...then Mercedes-Benz made everything obsolete...et al.

That's F1 for you.

People don't hate on Vettel this year, Its hamilton this year. Didn't you notice?

As for Vettel, he made mistakes in the past and last year he messed up a lot, had reliability issues but still managed to pull it together to win at the end of last year. This year he has been flawless, there is no reason to hate on him, he has simply dominated. I find it hard to not like Vettel this year, combined with his car he is unbeatable and that is annoying when the championship is over 5-6 races before the end of the year, But if you look back to the past, this has happened many times before.

Hate is the wrong word. I am British, so support Lewis, Jenson and Paul. This means that I'd prefer them too win. He just needs to let others get close.

I actualy like Loeb alot... he seems to be a very simple man, very good at what he does and he got his first championship at the age of 30... and he finished second overall in le mans 2006 (32) with little to non experience in that area...
As for Vettel he is fast and very good in F1 but I think he is a bit stuck up... there is just something about him that I dont like... and Im beggining to feel the same way about Hamilton...
My favority is Jenson Button and very oddly enough Im begging to like Alonso a all lot more (didnt like him before)...

The finger doesnt help one bit but still better that finger than the middle one...

Exactly my thoughts 👍 I just don't like Vettel, but I can't quite put my finger on why.

That's funny, he seems to be the least-hated world champ in recent memory.

Ahem. May I direct you to this 👍

Seb is fine; but I cheers for Webber.

I just like watching close racing so Seb is usually not in view because he is alone out front.

I hope Seb never uses the wrong victory finger:dopey:

People can't accept that he is the best driver doing the best job so make excuses why their favourite drivers (usually Hamilton) are so far behind by saying Vettel: just has the best car (ignoring Webber can't touch him),He can't overtake (Yes he can, look at Spain this year and what he did to Alonso at Monza, all without taking anybody out the race) Red Bull help him by not letting Webber beat him (even though team orders have only been used once this season and Webber ignored them anyway), Red Bull are cheating (no their wing doesn't flex too much and they haven't spent too much). Another thing is that people are so obsessed with history they can't accept that there could possibly be a 24 year old better than Senna.

I haven't seen a single post here where someone said they hated Vettel (Interludes did however start 5 page thread dedicated to criticizing Hamilton). Sounds like a straw man to me. The 'worst' I've seen is people saying they hope there is some good racing, which isn't hating on Vettel by any means. I think the OP was just looking for an excuse to post some Vettel videos and talk about how much he likes him.

Vettel and Webber may use the same car, but it doesn't mean they are using the same set up. 👍

I think it's just because of Vettel's dominance, it provides a more interesting race if the same guy doesn't win every time, at least I think IMO.

Why would Red Bull give Webber a slower car so he can't score as many points? Points = Prizes in F1

He's winning, that's the primary reason.

^Exactly. Just look at the Schumacher years. Everyone loves an underdog, but despises a winner who wins too frequently.

Mainly because he's winning. Also, he's 24 and about to become a double World Champion. Which may lead some fans to believe he's spoiled and never had to prove himself. Then you probably have other fans who are unhappy that their favorite driver or team is not winning.

I personally like Vettel. Don't get me wrong, I wish someone was challenging him for the World Championship. But Vettel seems humble and I get the impression that he doesn't take winning for granted. Quite frankly it has become tiresome reading comments from fans trying to discredit Vettel. Thankfully, I haven't noticed anyone doing that on this forum. Fans just need to accept that Vettel is the real deal and is only going to get better.

Part of me appreciates what we are seeing. 15, 20, or even 30 years from now, I think fans will still be talking about Newey's RB7. And how a "drinks company" along with a young German driver were able to take it to the likes of Ferrari and McLaren. We are witnessing F1 history. I think we should TRY to enjoy it as much as possible.

Formula One is competition; and competition is excitement; that is why there is a race; or football game; cricket match; etc.

No competition means no interest. How many watch a taped sporting event when they know the outcome? The minority would be my guesstimate.

I liked/enjoyed Schumacher when he won with Benneton; less so the winning years with Ferrari.

Everyone prefers a 'fight' for the world championship.

But again, Vettel is a great driver; has a great car and team. I am sure every other driver would like to be in a Red Bull :)

Except maybe Mark Webber

Actually I cheer for Webber; I hope he can win at least one race this year 👍

Vettel is like Christopher Nolan: he experienced some success early on, but when he became a household name, it became popular to hate him.

I hated Schumacher not for his dominance, but for his arrogance and seeming disdain for his competitors and team-mates during the Ferrari years. When people call Schumacher dirty, this isn't just an opinion, but an opinion backed up by some very convincing evidence... evidence which has gotten him penalized quite a few times.

Alonso is in a similar vein, but less likely to drive his car into someone solely to end their race... which is why I like Alonso.

Vettel... I have never had any animosity towards the guy. Sure, I've felt that he lacked racecraft in the past... but honestly... the RB of that year was obviously unstable coming out of slipstream... this year, with a good car, Vettel has shown he can race and overtake if needed to. He has been fantastic since he entered with Toro Rosso, he was fantastic in terms of pace when catching up with Button's Brawn GP car. He has been fantastic in terms of consistency and qualifying ability all season long.

Does he deserve to win? Assuredly. Would I feel sad if this ushered in a new Schumacher-esque era of dominance? No. Because at least Vettel is (so far) an honorable driver.

The ONLY reason why sports exist today is for the entertainment.
Without a good fight for the lead, there is no entertainment.
Granted their are plenty of mid-pack battles, but there is still always a single-man who likes to point fingers that wins.
Formula 1 has become a race for second place.

Then why was he hated last year?

I think you're overstating the whole "good fight for the lead" thing. We were absolutely spoiled last year with the way Vettel did not actually lead the World Championship until he won in Abu Dhabi, so the 2011 was always going to be hard-pressed to match it.

Last year I despised Alonso due to the German GP scandal, and wanted so much for him to lose, or at the very least, win the championship by enough points for that free pass to not have mattered. And then I watched my man Petrov ruin him in the last race of the season to great satisfaction. But this year I had absolutely no grudge against him.
I was happy to see Vettel win the championship by all means, and I knew it would quell that rage he had.

Then here we are in 2011, and it felt like after 10 laps into the race he was a minute ahead of everyone else, and then it happened again and again.
It all got very boring very quickly, and his over the top celebrations became increasingly annoying, it's like it's his first time winning an F1 race every time.
The finger thing itself doesn't bother me too much, but he shouldn't do it every race, it's just silly.
Unless he has to actually fight for more championships in the coming years, his hatebase will grow.

Having said that, even at this point you have to say his Singapore drive does deserve a bit of praise, for driving for that long in that heat and to have what may have been a perfect race and drive, he didn't get much screentime so I don't know, but less screentime for him is good.

I liked that they muted (well, chose not to broadcast) his radio screaming for one or two races, a few races ago.

As above, 1 driver dominating for a few years will drive people away from Formula 1 again, just as Schumacher did (I wasn't into F1 at that point and thus I have no grudge against him, would like to see him fight and win an 8th).

Most hate him because of what? Dominating this year's and most of last year's championship? The finger? Being a favourite to the Red Bull team? Being able to win the champonship at a very young age? Already got a very fast car at the start of a career? Building a massive gap in just 5 laps? Almost all and perhaps many more...

But the reality is, he's a damn good driver. Look at how he fared in 2008 with the Toro Rosso, winning in a treacherous Italian GP by 12 seconds and I remember him beating Heidfeld in the Chinese GP. I was fumed (was a fan of BMW Sauber and Nick) but at the end I have to appreciate his effort to bring the car there. I tried to like him this earlier this year but in the end got stuck up with Jenson

Well to be honest, I'm pretty sure everybody hate him not because of his attitude. Because I think he's a very likeable character in the paddock much like Webber and Jenson etc. But in anyway I don't hate him, just not a fan of him. He's a great talent in hands much like Alonso, been doing a fantastic job so far this season and look to be clinching his 2nd title. Nothing much can be said only he's done a fantastic job...

Haters gonna hate.

But seriously, people just hate him because he beats their favorite drivers every race. I'm sure if Vettel wasn't my favorite driver, I probably wouldn't be too fond of him either. But he is my favorite driver, so :p.

Vettel is a fantastic driver with a fantastic attitude. How can you fault him for being happy when he wins? Wouldn't you be happy everytime you won a Formula One race? I know I would.

I think he's absolutely fantastic on and off the track. Like Brundle says, its incredible how relaxed he is, very approachable, likes to have a laugh with the mechanics and understands all the banter. The way he handles it all for a young age is impressive.

He could reduce his after race interviews to 45 mins each and stop saying "yeah" and "but yeah" after each sentence, but yeah, he seems a top guy so far. :)
