When I first started watching F1 in 2001-2002 I used to hate Schumacher for making the sport quite boring. 2003 brought some more interesting results, but still hated Schumacher for his "dirty" driving and so on. The Adelaide '94 and Jerez '97 debates that were still ongoing at the F1 forum I visited didn't help.
It wasn't until a few races before Schumacher retired that I began to appreciate how awesome a driver he was. And before that, I realized I wasn't watching the sport just for the results.
Watch F1 long enough and it will make you quite cynical, given enough time. Then you realize that what you want to watch is the races and battles, and not just the championship standings. Even though Vettel looks certain to win the rest of the races this season, I have no hate for that. I've been around long enough (though not as long as most people) to know things change very quickly in F1. I have seen Williams fall from top team status in just a few years. That is the proof of the rapid changes that happen in this sport.
So I can understand why Vettel is so appreciative of his wins, because in a few years or possibly next year, he may not have the car or opportunities to win it again. It can happen just like that.
