Why still 180 Steering?

Does anyone know why they use only 180 steering wheels in the games nowadays? Is there an issue when they animate 720 or 900 degrees steering? It looks so wrong in the rally cockpit views. Rally drivers are very active with the steering, so are drifters. I know GTHD had more than 180 degrees but why did they change that? It looks so much better.

Polyphony has a high standard for realism, and to be honest, I don't think they could develop a system that looked authentic enough so they kept it simple.

I think they did have a system with hand over hand steering demoed at some point didn't they?

But then later I think the (semi) official reason was that they coudln't get it right enough so ditched it.
 
I wonder if PD bothered to replicate the steering motions of every car. I would be different on all cars like the weird active steering on some new BMWs.
 
Damn live for speed stands for poor realism but that guy drives on the grass (0:47) and it feels and looks like he´s driving on normal street... After watching lfs and then GT5P I think I got to play GT5P again, looks so awesome :)
 
It has been said at some time that they were trying to improve the 1:1 steering to get it into the game. Wonder if they have done that, and just decided to not show it in the demos...

It really doesn't bother me that much that it's off, especially since it's pretty off already that I have a wheel and there is a wheel on the screen too, but if they do get it right I think it would be a very nice touch...

Now that I think about it... a nicer (and even less useful) touch would be able to turn off the steering wheel on screen so I DONT see two wheels... but then I am getting greedy I suppose :)

This is something I've wondered, especially as the debate between interiors and cockpits and all sorts of things escalates. It was kinda fun driving in cockpit view with the Sixaxis, but for the hardcore, racing cockpit builders, with the wheel right in front of the screen... Won't it feel weird to see the shifting hand move with yours planted in the wheel, or the wheel movement not synced?

👍 Completely agreed. It doesn't bother me much. If anything they shouldn't worry about 1:1 steering and instead add the option to remove the wheel because it just makes so much more sense.
 
i much rather seeing the in game steering wheel, at true 1:1, otherwise it puts me off and i change to roof cam :p

That video shows 180 steering with hand movement. I just think it's annoying to see cockpit view of rally and drifting with 180 steering wheels. If I remember it right GTHD was quiet good with this, except the hands got stuck for a few seconds on the straights after. But that can't be so hard to fix...

GT4 had 1:1 animations and they looked ok. Current GT5:P animations look bad compared to GT4 crossing hands etc:



Also animation was fine in GTHD:

U gotta be kidding :) First of all they don`t have a high standard for realism (thats just a marketing hype), and it`s all about that it`s to much work to make 720/900 degrees steering hand animations for 1000 cars, or was it 200 cars....

Wheel is round on all cars.
 
I think the reason for not making 900° synced animation is because the big majority of console players are using a gamepad. And you can throw the stick from one side to the other (full steering lock-to-lock) a few times in a second. And that would look ridiculous. So they skipped that for the pad players.

To me, the whole driver animation is lame. It is a racing game. But it looks like a sunday afternoon drive by my grandfather wearing gloves. And that is especially sad because it destroys the immersion and makes the detailed interior view useless - at lea#st for driving.
 
It's pretty simple, really. The reason console driving simulators don't feature 900-degree steering wheel rotation is the fact that some people use a controller, not a racing wheel. If you're taking a high-speed corner using a controller and push the analogue stick all the way to one side, it would be fairly disconcerting for that to result in full lock on the steering wheel. Whereas PC simulators, such as Live For Speed, can feature this because even those who aren't lucky enough to own a wheel use a mouse to steer.

I believe there is usually input dampening form the controller to prevent full lock to lock in 0 seconds (although it's probably faster than most can spin a wheel) and on PCs I don't think anyone steers with a mouse... it's pretty much wheel or keyboard (maybe joystick).
 
I think that they just couldn't get hand animations that looked good while turning the wheel 900 degrees, so Kaz told them to forget it. I mean look at the animations we had way back at the E3 demo for Prologue. Those hand animations were AWFUL, and I would much rather stick to 180 than to have that ugly display of 900.

They just could have copied LFS animations as option for wheel users. Or use the ones in GT4/GTHD as they were fine.
 
i assume i can still use a 900 degree steeringweel, and the ability to turn it 900 degrees?
i dont care about the animations, i just want to drive :p
 
Ive brought this up 3 or 4 times...

First time I was assured that it would be in the game. It was also suggested that maybe controllers would have 180 steering while wheels would have 900. But later I found it Kaz said it was too messy and dropped the idea. In LFS, the drivers did not have to shift. Imagine driving a f430, with paddles and drifting. there would be a lot of hands going through eachother...
 
There should be option to remove the hands or the the whole wheel if proper rotation can not be used.
