Hi all,

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why PD implemented a one-use, paint chip system? It is inconvenient, and I really don't see any advantage of it. Plus with the DLC paints, you can only paint once with each colour :ouch: If this has something to do with realism, it is a piece of realism I think we can all do without.

If this has been discussed in any other thread, please link to it and close this one. I have not been able to find any yet. Thanks!

Well they had run out of things to develop, then one day a low level programmer had an idea. He suggested they make a pointless paint system that no body cares about. And Kaz said yes, because it gave them an excuse not to do the things we actually want, like tracks and cars.

👍

The whole car system Kaz for some reason farked up badly. I mean you can't buy brand new standard cars. You got to get them used with horrible amount of miles on them and never their good peak hp. Then you can't revert them back to normal when you do certain upgrades. I mean seriously Kaz needs to rethink his system he had setup. Should be a option you can pay with credits to turn a car back to its brand new stock state. That would be awesome. Then a store with paint chips and chips of the dlc we got.

Well I like it. The idea, I believe, was to make car collecting more unique and interesting, finding cars of a certain color and then allowing you to use that color on existing cars. Of course duping and the like killed that idea, while most may find it annoying, I like the added element, just adds a bit of personality to the game in a unique way.

Someone send Mr Kaz to Halfords to pick me up a tin of BMW Arctic Silver :sly:, Maybe then he will realize that 1 just isn't enough.

It is a pain that's for sure .

A better way of doing it might've been to make the DLC paints dupable , but only to accounts that are on your PS3 / IP Address . At least then you could make a few copies .

On the flip side of this issue , at least we're not seeing everyone paint all of their cars Gold & Silver Chrome again.

Man that was tacky. :yuck:

matty it's like you slapped the face of PD and said "I've brought you the book of Reason! Better known as Common Sense"

Comment is too funny +1000 of these things 👍

Well, your question is valid because it discuss actual design-decision and its influence at actual gameplay.

First, I like the overall Item system, Paint included. I also understand how many players are annoyed by it, because they feel and find it as unnecessary complication. However, that system is pretty unique from many standpoints, not just actual execution.

From my perspective, initial foundation of the Paint Chip system lays in one of the unique aspect of Gran Turismo series where all cars have "real-life" paints/coating for every model. From the very first 1997 game all dealership-cars are painted into their original paints, named with proper manufacturer-names and GT series is really unique because of that. Development of the "GT Auto" feature introduced a Paint Shop as a part of the overall ownership/maintenance philosophy of the GT series and Paint Chips are created as a tool for the usability of the Paint Shop.

Second, creating a live and vibrant "community" was obviously one of the main focuses while designing community-goals of GT5. From the very functionality of user "Lounge", over options for "sharing" things (B-Spec drivers for Remote Races, Cars over Profile functionality), all the way to "Gift" option that allows gifting of all items in the game that corresponds to the "Item" category (driving gear, tuning parts, car tickets, actual cars, horns and - paint chips).

Third part of my rationalization is existence of the Used Car/Online Collector car dealerships.

I presume how Polyphony's intention was to create a "game inside the game" aimed at the community and Friends in primary-focus, where players would be given Paint Chips as a bonus for buying the car in color they like (at least for the majority of cars). Obtaining a Paint Chip allows a player to either paint a desired Used Car to color he wants, use that color on new Dealership car that does not come with his preferred-color or to gift it to his friend who is fond of particular color/manufacturer.

Also, Special Polyphony Digital Paint items (chrome/matte) were obviously created as a way to additionally award players for their progress in Collector-aspect of the game and to create a Special Items that are awarding some accomplishment.

*Problem* that many players have is - at lest I presume that way - because all other games in the genre went easier way and just allowed for a car-painting as a given, fee of hassle and free of charge.

Another *problem* is how introduction of the game-backup functionality - which was needed - allowed for development of the "dupe-community" where "trading" became more important than "gifting" (worth noticing is how same happend to car trading, gear trading, etc.).

Personally, I like the Paint Chip system and I really have no problem with it whatsoever. I love white cars with black rims and during last 12 months of play I really had no problem whatsoever to paint all my cars in different shades of white. Besides having great amount of Paint Chips from my original Dealership-purchases, many of my game-friends were gifting me white-chips and I was gifting them their color of choice. No duping, trading or exploiting a system was needed. Further, I really enjoy in that small "game inside the game" aspect and have been painting Used Cars into original manufacturers colors from the very beginning. All my used Nissans are painted into shades of Nissan's whites, Mercedes at Mercedes ones, etc.

However, I can also understand how many players find that system as complication and I also think how PD could have solve it - together with the recent problem of getting just one Paint Chip per color in DLC (which I also do not find logical) - with introduction of the real Paint Shop.

In my view, real Paint Shop would allow players to choose the manufacturer and the color (Paint Chip) they like in quantities they want and purchase it with their in-game Credits as a regular "Item". Also, Paint Shop would also offer an option to "Buy" paint-chips from players by discounted price (as an "used item").

In addition, you could only buy colors from manufacturers whose cars you have in your Garage. New manufacturers would "unlock" with obtaining their models

Of course, further functionality would lock ability to buy any "Special Color Item" (matte, chrome or special) as long as you do not actually obtain it in the game (by reaching some goal or buying DLC) which would than unlock it for purchase at "Polyphony Digital Paints". In addition, we already witnessed how "gifting" (trading) ability can be restricted per-tem-basis (DLC paints are non-tradable and non-dupable) so there is an option to preserve "specialty" of the Special Paint Chips even with such Paint Shop system.

That system would preserve original aspects of ownership/maintenance philosophy of the GT series, would expand GT Auto functionality, would allow players to sell colors they do not like or do not want to have back for Credits and would give further initiative in actual gameplay (gain Credits to buy *something*).

Same logic of Shop could also be imposed for non-special Driving Gear items, etc.

Overall, I love the Paint Chip logic from gameplay-design perspective, but I also think how expanding it in form of Paint Shop would benefit for perspective and usability of both gameplay and players.

There are strange things in GT5, i feel the same with the suits/helmets, what about a suit shop? :dopey: you can buy the ones you want instead of having thousands of useless ugly suits.

That is a very detailed and well-rounded suggestion you have there amar!

I always thought that a potential paint shop could work similarly to the UCD (albeit with more options), where 50 paints are slowly rotated through each race (or day or some other measurement of time passing). The paints would be sorted by hue so that a wide variety of colors is always available, so you don't pop in to find 50 different shades of grey at any one time.

However, I like your suggestion much more! Since most paints seem to be model-specific as well as brand specific, you could implement a system that unlocks the colors available to that model, rather than the entire brand, which would encourage players to add to their garage to unlock more paints... which helps unlock more specialty paints since their garage is growing. Speaking of specialty paints, it would've been nice for PD to not give them to us at random. I hate getting Mattes that I already have and didn't like or use the first time!

It would've been nice for PD to give us a heads up too, so we know when we wont get a paint chip for buying a car... since I blew a whole lot of money on an MP4-12C that I only wanted for the orange, only to not get the Orange.

I usually hate quoting an entire post, especially if it's long... but Amar, you've hit the nail on the head on how this paint chip / item system should be implemented. It's brilliant.

Now go and share this with Kaz! :sly: I personally share the same views as you with this item system, it doesn't annoy me too much. But it could be a lot better... as you have just explained. 👍

A paint shop is definitely a nice idea, even though the one-use paints have never really bothered me much, up until now. At least you can get them back, even if you have to trade for them, or wait a long time till you finally come across them again. The bad thing about DLC paints is that you cannot trade for them, nor does it seem you'll be able to get them back in-game, like all the other paints. The only option is to buy them, and not just buy the paints you want, but to buy the whole pack. Multiple times if you want multiples of the same color. It's insane. If there was at least a paint shop where I could buy individual paints, even if it was for real money, that really wouldn't be so bad. I'd gladly pay the price of the paint pack/100 for a single paint of my choice.

👍👍👍 Excellent post on the matter. I also second the Paint Shop, but I for one don't need a color/livery editor. This paint chip system is very interesting to me because I'm very much about using the actual paints with actual names on specific cars in my garage and found that hunting, trading, gifting, and eating paint chips is an extremely unique and entertaining take on something that every other game in the market has sold us short on.

GT5 has shown that you can even elaborate on something so simple as paint chips to fuel a community and replay value. When I go into trade rooms, about 50% of the time people are looking for paint chips to trade and some people will give away good, rare cars from the UCD for them. I applaud PD's effort and hope that the paint chip design is properly expanded on in GT6. 👍

I like the idea of unique paint chips like mattes and chromes but the rest of the colours? Pointless. Just make it like any other game where you can paint the car any colour you like. Like you can in real life if you have the cash. Given how powerful the painting and livery options are in it's main competitor, Forza, you'd have thought that PD would have given it a bit more thought. But apparently they were too busy modelling Skylines over and over.

+1 👍

I like to think that those chips are buckets, and that i collect them in a storage hall nearby. When finally time to paint, it's like in the real world, you dive in a big book of available paints and start to look after a nice combo, etc...

I have mixed feelings about the system, but there are only a few things I don't like about it. I'll admit, I like collecting paint chips. Getting a Lagunaseca blue or Grand Prix Maroon is a fun little thing, and collecting them is enjoyable, it adds to the game a little bit. However, one time use bugs me, and I like Amar's idea of being able to purchase duplicates of paints I already own. That way I could use the paint colors I like without losing the chip. If they incorporated that, I would be very happy with the system.

It's not about realism, it's about collecting. I like part of the paint chip system because all the paint chips are made by artists so some of them are actually quite gorgeous. I don't like that they are used up though... sometimes it makes it hard to match a good body colour with a good rim colour, which is annoying. I would like some more freedom when it comes to visual customization, so the paint chip system must die.

To answer your question, I think the reasons why paint chips is in the game are:
1. To promote trading and gifting.
2. To reward frequent playing (log in bonus)
3. To make cars more unique, if you paint your car in a rare colour the chance is quite small that you'll see someone else with the same car-colour combination.

Maybe they got a discount on the licenses of the car manufacturers if they used the paint of that manufacturer.

Why not have the paint and racing gear SIMULATE real life and just have stores to go to?

PD could even have done deals with PPG, DuPont, etc. and Bell, Simpson, Alpinestars, Sparco, etc. to promote their real life colors/designs.

I agree with OP big times but luckly we can still create some good locking tuned cars in GT5 so it kinda save the aestetic tuning for me, for instance an Isotope green Nissan Silvia RM with black matte rims looks really cool to me. And what about all those Lotus, TVR colours or the Maziora line? Great stuff.

The real reason, I suspect is that if paint items don't get used up, our huge collection will drag down to the pace of a snail whenever we open up the paint list in GT auto, not to mention it'll make save files larger than it needs to be.

Your statement (in bold) would be fine IF, everyone wanted a single color paint job, but not everyone wants one single color on their car, what about 2 tone paint jobs, custom stripes in oposing colors, and the like?

I think that all manufacturer paint colors should be readily available in the paint shop and charge you different premiums depending on the type of paint you want to use. We shouldn't have to buy a car just to have the color. The game can continue to award you specialty paint but I really don't need 2000+ paint chips to scroll through since it takes forever for the palate to load up.

I think a paint shop would be an excellent idea and would be a nice feature within GT Auto. Paying so much for certain colors with in game credits would be great.

Along with that, we need a better streamlined way to buy cars. I mean, if I buy in bulk one night getting A LOT of cars, I don't want it to show me the car every time and ask if I want to get in. Plus it has to load and save EVERY TIME I buy a car. It really gets annoying.

The same goes for the DLC cars. Please don't put them in the Delivery Truck, just put them into my garage. I spent probably 10 minutes last night just getting the cars out of ticket form into my garage. That is a poor design decision, plain and simple.

All I really find annoying is that you pay actual money for the DLC paint, and you can only use them once is pretty dumb...

Well, 100% of the times that I had to buy car paint for my real life cars, I asked the salesman for the name of the color.

That's how it works in the real world. Simple like that.

It would be cool to have a flexible pallete together with that, but I want them to keep the system anyway.

I love the paint chip system, cos it means some paints become rare and it's exciting getting new paint chips, but it is flawed. Cos you can't preview the paint, it means I end up never using any cos I don't know what they will look like. So, I just have this massive collection of paint chips that I'm too scared to use so the idea is awesome, just flawed.

There are strange things in GT5, i feel the same with the suits/helmets, what about a suit shop? :dopey: you can buy the ones you want instead of having thousands of useless ugly suits.

That would be cool! Same as the paint chips, make a shop for the suits and paint chips, but you can only buy paint chips that you have unlocked! That way, you still have the cool random/collecting element, but without the frustrating 1 time use element. A shop like this would fix everything!
