It's so completely awesome and bad-a‪ss and incredible in every way...

Because they don't have an engine they could put in it that would pass emissions requirements. And it can't be equipped with air bags either.

Why why why why won't they redesign it while still keeping everything that matters and adding everything that is required, like Jeep has done countless times with the Wrangler? And the Jeep is probably still better offroad.

Who would buy a brand new 1990 Land Rover?

Me.

Stupidly enough this is one of those vehicles that I feel like I should own at some point in my life. I don't care how inefficient they are or even if they are the best off-road, I just love them.

And we did get the Defender during the mid-90's and they still can be had, there are at least three I know of in the area that are US spec. There are a few that a imported too which are newer (and cooler since the steering wheel is on the wrong side).

The Wrangler will probably remain the best street-legal off-roader until petrol is banned from cars.

Until you posted that I didn't even know they didn't have airbags. The thought never even crossed my mind.

It's okay, all Defenders in the UK are used on farms anyway, and you don't need airbags for running down sheep.

@Keef - they won't redesign it (or at least they haven't redesigned it - since they are working on a brand new version) because the Defender's biggest customer is the Royal Army, and apart from minor revisions they're happy with it as it is. And you don't tend to redesign something if your customers don't want any changes whatsoever.

How does England expect to police the world with a truck no tougher than a Wrangler?

Well, they seem to have managed perfectly fine since the 50s and in some instances the US Army have used them instead of Humvee's...

Modern Wranglers are cars for teenage girls. The Defender is still as awesome as it ever was.

Don't ever say that if you come to America, you will be shot. The only vehicle that is taken more seriously then a Wrangler is a Pickup truck.

I have only ever known one guy that owned a Wrangler, and he was openly gay.

Urban Dictionary also has an interesting take on it.

Stripper Wranglers are the best vehicles that Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge makes. Why? Because they have a smaller opportunity to be awful. The less interior surface area, the better.

^^^ That is going straight in my sig! I suppose it is a good point, going by GM's typical interior...

"Chick car" is the last thing that comes to mind when I see a Wranger.

I'm sure I've posted this before, but...

Though I don't think that stereotype is true - at least not anymore. The only people I see driving Wranglers are the usual Chrysler buyers over here, i.e. middle aged (usually married) men.

Suppose there's not enough of a market too, people can take their kids to school in other things, and if they want off roading they settle for a jeep which is reasonably close in ability.
Modern Land Rovers are getting soft, sure the Wolf is still ace but you have to get an ex mod one couple years old. Do Defenders still have PTO's? heck the wading depth is pretty lame now too, you would think they would improve even more on the first one.
My dad sold a Series 3 to an American guy who imported it, not really sure his intentions, I guess it's just something different and he wanted better than a defender.

Do strippers usually own Wranglers?

oy, watch the gay jokes!

Jeep is probably the BEST product that Chrysler puts out. at least they didn't fall apart on me.

I don't think LR had much success over here with the disco. they had to luxury it to death, and was TOO heavy and thirsty, even for Americans

and yes, you brits, two vehicles are sacred cows in the states...pickups and Jeeps. doesn't mean you won't wind us up over it (yup, i know brit speak, and even a touch of CRS)

No gay joke in my post. Sorry if it was taken that way. Trojan makes a larger condom called the magnum.

Edit: sorry read up further. Not aimed at me :)

Love my 2010 wrangler. Not sure if i like that or my 07 fj better. Leaning towards jeep. Driving around with the car fully stripped is bomb.. wish toyota kept that feature in the fj reboot.

Actually the updated Wrangler is a pretty nice place to be. Chrysler made huge improvements in the interior. Pretty sure the diesel is coming soon also, with ~30mpg.

-> I kinda ask the same question on the Land Cruiser 70...

^ Along with the Defender, I also adore this brute!!!

That's a good point actually. Out in the sand dunes of the Middle East you don't see Jeeps or Land Rovers. They all drive Land Cruisers and Patrols, because the Japanese ones don't break down...

as a reply to the second post, screw the environmental studies there is no global warming, the sun is responsible for warming up the planet not us driving cars.
