Why worry about cars sounds?

Most of the stock exhausts in GT5 actually sound good, like the Gallardo and 458. It's the tuned exhausts that sound like crap. Put a racing exhaust on the Aventador and you'll want to mute the audio. If PD could get the tuned exhaust sounds right, the complaints will halve.
I would like to disagree with that:

Real life 458:

GT5 458:

Real life Gallardo:

GT5 Gallardo:

And don't try to argue with the YouTube quality, and "speakers improve your sound" stuff, because the GT5 videos sound almost exactly the same as on my sound system.

Besides the inaccurate engine sounds, another reason why the cars don't sound like they should is because of the gear changing sounds - the way the engine behaves during a gear change, for lack of a better explanation. If you would look at a video of a Nissan GT-R on YouTube in real life, you'd find that the gear changes are very smooth. In GT5, the car's gear changes aren't very smooth. Same with the Aventador (Note the complete lack of effort at even replicating the Aventador's sound by PD while you're watching):

Does the LP640-4 sound like this with the racing exhaust in GT5? ;)

I may just be deaf but why do so many people care about the sound of the cars? I personally don't care about the sound but I want to know why there are some people that only care about the sounds, especially when the same people want better updates.
Let's take the GT-R as an example. Stock, it sounds like a vacuum cleaner, no? Now, compare it to a quality video showcasing its exhaust. The real life sound is better, no?

Now, do the same thing for worse offenders like the Ferrari 458. Sounds a hellavualot better in real life, doesn't it?

Not to hate on GT, but this is why I kinda prefer Forza - the cars actually sound somewhat close to their real life counterpart and just adds a "special factor" to racing.

Yeah. I'm pretty positive.

Especially when the GT5 sound sample is just one sound pitch-shifted along the rev range, and the one in the video you provided actually sounds like an engine. To say nothing about how all you can hear in the GT5 video when in interior view is a slightly muffled version of the exhaust noise rather than the noise it actually should be (a combination primarily made up of the engine itself, including intake sounds, with the exhaust in the background; among other things).

So would you guys say this car sounds good or bad? It's my favorite sounding car (after the 2J) and I was wondering if you guys thought it was realistic or not.

The sound sample from the ER34 is actually pretty good. The only thing missing is the BOV, suspension sound, etc. Basically, like all the others, the sound is too "clean".

I understand why that is, but I'm with you. I don't care about the sound all that much.

I have a bigger problem with being in the shade and seeing the sky turn into a light bulb. Damn you, graphical inconsistencies!

Some people more than others... But the more I get into racing in general, the more I realize that the sounds are off. When spectating, the sound is probably as important as seeing the cars, since in many cases all you see is a blur!

Watching Le Mans this weekend on t.v-lemans.com, they had different feeds for each of (a few) cars, and a great part of the experience for me was cranking up the volume and listening to the difference in sound. As a car left the race (toyata, for instance) they would replace the feed with a shot straight down the "runway" immediately after the Ford chicanes -- it was awesome to close my eyes and listen to each car as it went by. Go online now and youtube videos of the Vette's versus the Audi R-18's and you will see what I am talking about.

Another interesting note -- the guy who developed the Audi R-10 TDI engine (a very quiet engine) was being interviewed and he was talking about the relationship between the sound of the engine and it's energy output. Interesting discussion. Check the vid out starting at 6:00. http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/FFwoxM1MiBw?hd=1&*********** (note: this video is from the '08 Le Mans).

To answer your question I must agree with all those above who said that it is simply a matter of realism! Crank it up!

People want better sound because we want the cara to sound remotely similar to the car in real life. Like I personally own a Subaru and subarus in this game don't even sound close.

personally, I used the sound to know when to shift gears, I usually don't look at the tach, just listen for the sound to peak and shift. I do the same for my real life motorcycle, it will make you a better driver, bacause you can concentrate on the road, not the tach

Because big block V8's don't ****ing sound like vaccuumm cleaners

Sorry. I just don't understand why people care so much about that stuff. I personally can't tell the difference too much so I am just curious about something I can't really determine.

First off PD claim to be the most realistic console simulator out there, yet how can this be claimed when the competition has the actual car sounds. Gt hasn't ever really had real car sounds since the first one. Secondly most of us are car fanatics thus we can tell it's off. Example all three racing Corvettes (C5-R, Z06 rm which is the 06 C6.R, zr1 newer C6.R) the sound is not even close to the real life counter parts.

So it becomes an issue of how realistic is the game suppose to be?

You use the engine note to make gear shifts at the moment it is nearly impossible when you have cars near you . It's so annoying now I've put SBKX back into my play station please SORT it out .

I think as long as the sound is half decent then that's good enough, I pay more attention to the in game music. It's a big ask to get the car sounds spot on for so many cars and for me there are more important things for PD to focus on.

Assuming you are a petrol head, how can you say that:crazy:

Of course you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that, just that I do not understand. There are many important things that need PD's attention, and the sound is one of them IMO. :)

It does the job, when I'm racing I'm not thinking about the sound. As long as the cars that matter sound alright then I'm happy, it's like how the 2D trees in the background don't bother me because I'm not paying much attention to them.

For the same reason you would buy a V8 muscle car over a 4 cylinder import...

I actually prefer the scooby rumble over any V8 and I know a bunch who would agree. :p

At first I was the same. I didn't really care about the sounds as I was blown away by everything else in the game. After a year of playing though (and after watching Forza videos ) I've started to pay more attention to the sounds and some of them sound absolutely terrible.

Having a nice aggressive sound on a car would help create a better sense of speed and power. I sure hope the cars sound nicer in GT6.

This.

I always feel better powering through a corner when the engine is thrumming.

From what I heard from a friend, PD used digital sound, Forza & NFS use analog. Apparently, analog is better for true life sounds. I would say that Forza and NFS have wicked sounding engines, even NFS on PS2.
