Hyde, you could just read the last few posts. Sony fixes them for free, and when you get the PS2 back your warrantee is renewed.

{edit}post irrelevant to main topic of thread-only relevant to spin-off topic{edit}
{edit 2} The wait isn't a month, more like 2- 2 1/2 weeks.{edit}

nah, i think this one worked out just fine for me. maybe it wasnt quite "will my old ps2 play gt4?" in the end.. but "will my Japanese ps2 play Japanese gt4?" outdoes it anyway. woo. i think :indiff:

(to SaintKamus. (G) snuck in ahead of me there)

i bought my ps2 4 years ago (i have no idea what the model number is) and it started disc read error about 2 years ago. but it is very easy to open it up and clean it. theirs about 8 external screws and four internal on the disc drive itself. i use a tweezers and a q-tip to very carfully clear the lens of any dust. this works really well for me and everytime i do it, which is about 1 time every two months, the system become fast again. just like new. all games new and old work just fine. does anyone else do this? im sure some do.

If you have problems with PS2 like it wont read (dics error) then open up the PS2 put some grease on the laser rails and take the q tip and clean the laser and it will work like new

i wanted to open my ps2, too. but i just found ONE screw! i know, that's mad, but please help me!!!!

and some more questions: if i run really old games, like motoGP, which are burned on the old BLUE ps2-dvds, my ps2 vibrates and screames like hell. what's that for a sh.t, can it destroy my black baby and is there any possibility to solve that problem?

I also have a very old one. I've never had it give me disc read errors, but it has gotten very slow. I've opened it up and cleaned it once - still working well now.

Makes a lot of strange clunks and noises, and it creaks when I open the tray, but the old girl still works :D

LOonIE: Did you remove the rubber pads on the bottom of the PS2? All the screws are under little covers like those. Just peel them off with your fingernail.

My ps2 runs GTA:SA fine.. never a problem... but it totally refused to run GT3.... can anybody help??

Maybe your GT3 disk is scratched in some way - if it was a laser problem wouldn't run any game at all - so might be the actual disk.

If anyone here vistits the GTA:SA forum they will know that R* (I think it was) raised some concerns that the older PS2s, mainly that they would be unable to cope with the advanced graphics and would slow down badly.

I think what wgt4 is trying to ask is whether his PS2 will have the same problem running GT4. The answer, I don't know.
But I haven't heard of any older PS2s having major problems with GTA:SA.

swap disk?? is this something special?? what does it do? i have a chip in my ps2 for imports...
i was talking about actually taking the disk (cd) and swapping it for another one...

after i came back and complained about the problem (both times) they put the cd into their machine to check... worked fine...

Ok ok my misunderstanding. To answer your question. The swap disk is $18 and you dont have to mod your PS2 to play burnt or import games. Cheap awesome alternative to modding your PS2. You dont even have to take the PS2 apart to use the swap disk. 👍

but what is it??

by the way... my ps2 was modded BEFORE i bought it, but yes - brand new

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought with a swap disk, all you had to do was let the PS2 boot up with the SD (Swap Disk) inside, then remove it and insert your import game and then BAM! You can play the game...

Yet, when I look at that web site above, I see this....
"You just have to use our PS2Cover or Slide Card."

What gives?
Am I missing something?

TIA

Yeah, I use the Slide Card. You boot the swap CD or DVD (depending on what format the game you want to play is) normally, and then need to swap the discs. However, if you press the open button, the PS2 detects that the disc has changed and tries to load it normally, which won't work with burned/import games. So, you have to swap the discs without the PS2 realizing it. The PS2Cover/Fliptop replaces the top half of your PS2's shell, incorporating a flip-open disc cover much like that on the PSX - you open it, swap the discs, and close it, and the PS2's electronics don't realize it happened. The Slide card uses the same theory but has a different approach - you must remove the (cosmetic only) disc tray faceplate (the little piece that has the rotatable PS2 logo on it - it separates from the tray itself), and then you can use the Slide card, a thin plastic card with a hook, to release the pin that holds the tray in place. You can then manually pull the tray out, swap the discs, push the tray back in, and replace the pin with the slide card. Again, the PS2 electronics don't realize it happened.

Fliptop is easier to use, but it voids your warranty since you must break the seal between the top and bottom half of the outer shell. The Slide Card only requires you take the tray faceplate off, so your warranty isn't voided.

As far as San Andreas, my PS2 runs it without slow-down, so I hope it won't for GT4 as well...

Hi Heep,

You seem to know your stuff about SwapMagic, I bought version 3.3 off ebay last week in preperation for GT4.

I am a little concerned it may not work though, as GT4 will no doubt be DVD9 (dual layer DVD) so I'm worried SwapMagic will a have compatibility issue.

What do you think?

P.S. Hi everyone. :)

I have been using the swap disks for a lonnnngg time. They are wonderful. After I used the slide card for a little while I eventually go the flip top for the PS2. Now all I do is put the swap disk in then when it sais insert disk, I just put in whatever game I want. Only takes mabey 15 seconds for this entire process. Very easy and very cheap. NO mods required. I have played every game out there that I can get my hands on with no problems yet. Including GT4P pal, GT4 Japanese, Kaido battle, GTC2001, GTC2002, and GTA:SA. 👍 Soon to be playing the GT4 demo in about 4 days. 👍 I also have over 110 backed up PS2 games that I play.

It's good to hear that it's so compatible CAMAROBOY69.

Have you tried Metal Gear Solid 3 by any chance? I think that is a DVD9 game also, if SwapMagic is incompatible with DVD9 I will cry.

Question...CAMAROBOY69's post got me thinking....

Will the Swap Magic 3.2 well actually the DVD loader 2.0 boot the GT4 (NTSC-J) disc? I remember there is an issue with dual layer DVDs(?) and the 3.2 discs not loading them? I have an old north american PS2 and play GT4p (NTSC-J) and the GT4 demo with no issues. I did own GT3 concept 2001 and I could never get it to boot with the swap magic 3.2 disc.

Or do I need the newer 3.3 swap discs?

Anyone know the answer to this? I was going to wait until the north american version came out but my Japanese wife offered to pick it up for me when she is in Japan for New Years...I can't say no...haha.

you see.. that's why i'm confused... what's so different about GT3?? as i said, it worked fine on my friend's ps2 and on the store's ps2.. just not on mine...
come to think of it, i can't play MotoGP3 either... (i dont care tho, for a bike game - rs2 kicks it's ass)
yet, i can play MGS3, GTA: SA, NFSU2 and a whole heap of other graphic intensive games with NO PROBLEMS... the only other racing game i've had a problem with was Kaido Battle 2 where my refresh rates were a little slow during 2 player (if there was too big a gap, one player or the other would end up with invisible roads)

from what i understand of the swap disk.. it's just to get past the whole 'copy' and 'import' problems... btu my ps2 is chipped already and doesnt have these problems with any other games...

You are screwed!

my ps2, no matter how thouroghly i clean it still is a rickity noisey machine. works fine though. a friend scrathced his ps2 lens while cleaning and messed it all up. we took apart some deusch bags system and removed the whole lens assembly and transplanted it to his. this is a good method to use only if you have the parts to preform it.

I used swap disks & slide card on my last PS2 which was 14 mounths old, and after 2 mounths of it, the PS2 wouldnt read anything!

Now I only use the swap disks on occasions to play GT4P on my current PS2, and now when I boot up GT4P with it, Instead of the blue speedo(when loading) its red and I cant play it anymore. Quite sad really. My current PS2 is now 4 mounths old, should I do anything about this while the warrently is still good?

I don't know what you people are doing to your PS2s to wreck them. I've had my PS2 for almost 4 years. It is one of the very early North American models bought at the Sony store in NYC about 5 months after the PS2 came out. I've used it to play GT and as my primary DVD player since then. The thing is on at least 2 hours a day, sometimes more, every day. I've never cleaned it, other than blow dust out of the fan twice since I have owned it.

2 years ago I took it apart to install a flip-top to play GTC:2001 with swap discs. That didn't work. Then i bought GT4p when it came out in Japan and have played that just fine for almost a year now. I've been playing the GT4 demo for the past month.

I've never had a problem with the PS2, EVER! Other than with GTC:2001.

I'll just buy the GT4 NTSC-J version and if it works it works, if not I'll ebay it.

no big deal.

Hmmm mabey its the fact I left my old PS2 on basically 24-7 :dopey:
I dont do that with my new one though, Id like to keep it for more than a year.

I've also heard stories about DVD9 discs not being able to swap - I unfortunately cannot confirm nor deny them. As far as I know, MGS3 is not dual-layer. I have a...erm...slightly less than legal copy of it, and I can swap and play it no problem. I'm not very concerned about GT4 however as I fully intend on showing up to the store on the American release day and plonking over some cash...

My PS2 has been very reliable..I got a disc read error once or twice before I cleaned it a while back, but not again since then. I use my slide card on a very regular basis, and leave my PS2 on nearly 24/7 for the past 3-4 years. Noisiest bastard you've ever used, but it works fine.

Oh, I am having some controller issues at the moment (still using the original), but I'm going to get a new one over the holidays and hope that it's a bad old controller and not a bad controller socket in the PS2... Sometimes vibration from games, and sometimes for no good reason, it will "unplug" itself, that is, the PS2 doesn't recognize it and often gives me a message to plug a controller in. I just jiggle the plug and it comes back.

Yes. The day it came out on rental I brought it home, backed it up then played for about an hour. 👍 ALL games play. :) So far there is not a single game I havent been able to play. NOT A SINGLE GAME. NOTHING. EVERYTHING PLAYS.
