As far as I am concerned the map is not much of an assist. If someone needs to refer to it to get around a track then that person is not going to be very fast. It can help people learn the track at first and it is good to refer to for position of other cars when they are not close enough to see otherwise.
The driving line is a huge aide that is much more unrealistic than a map would be and some really good drivers use it in every race. I personally was hoping that they would not include this in GT5 but it seems that almost every game over the last few years includes this now.
I hope that in multiplayer mode there is an option for the host to disable this feature for the lobby. I know some people on Forza who are crazy fast with the line on and all over the place with it off meanwhile I learned the tracks the old fashioned way. Lap after lap after lap on GT4 until I figured them out. Nurbugrring took a while and that full map up in the corner was very little help on that track. You could look and see oh there is a tight right hander coming up so you slow down a bit only to discover that turn is still a mile away. The map was good to see oponent position and when they were pitting.
The shift/brake indicator was not so bad as it only warned you a bit if you were going to fast whereas the line shows you where you should drive, where you should brake and how fast you should target a corner. Fine for people who are learning the track but way over the top for experienced drivers.
