I didn't see a thread about the testing so I opened this one to keep the discussion on all teams' first rounds in one place.

So far, we can really see how difficult it is for all teams to even start testing. After an entire morning only Mercedes and STR have timed laps.

Meanwhile, Lewis hamilton now owns the dubious achievement of first crasher in 2014.

And Lotus is really missing out.

Lots and lots of running this morning. :P

Autosport live commentary confirms Hamilton's crash caused by a failure on the car.

I think it's important to note the only 2 cars to run for more than one lap at a time (Mercedes and Toro Rosso) were teams which used 1 of their allocated filming days to shake down the cars, could be a smart move whilst the others have all lost half a day of testing.

Ferrari, with Kimi, finally managed a lap time (1.33 ). It takes at least three consecutive laps (outlap/flying lap/inlap) to do it, quite an achievement today!!!! :D

Here's a shot of his front wing on track after it popped off, this led to him losing turning ability and crashing straight on into the wall:

Two years in a row that he lost the ability to the turn, last year with the break failure and this year with the wing, guess that means he'll have a pretty good year :sly:

Didn't this happen to Rosberg in Korea last year, or was it different this time? Has anyone seen footage?

Yeah don't need the typo fix BHR, it's 6 am in the morning here and I'm just waking up for class...

And it did happen but I'm not sure if it was Korea...

EDIT:

Checked and it was

According to reports, what happened to Lewis was pretty much what happened to Alonso in Malaysia last year:

Except Lewis was the only car on the track so couldn't have hit anybody, maybe a similar problem to Rosberg's at the Korean GP last year?

btw Caterham are launching any minute now.

And Williams just promised on twitter that we would see their car soon.

I guess we'll see them running their traditional dark blue livery instead of revealing any new colours today (Petrobras comes to mind, I'm not believing the Martini rumour yet). One-off liveries are always nice though :)

Yeah, not saying he ran into another car, just that he went off in a similar way to Alonso. Not talking about the cause of the front wing failure, just the result of it.

I know :) I was making a point about Mercedes having problems with how the nose is mounted in the recent past.

Mercedes have confirmed that their running for today is over because of that crash, probably more down to a lack of spare parts than the amount of damage looking at the car.

A bit of a setback for Mercedes, for sure, but if there is a fundamental problem (rather than a freak incident) with the front wing or the pylons, then it's good that they've discovered the problem early. That's the way I'm seeing it, anyway, as a Mercedes fan. :P

:scared: I hope they haven't made it up to the mid pack just so we'll have the pleasure of not seeing it on the TV screens too often!

This concept was pretty accurate in terms of the idea, but it looks a lot better:

Such a weird shape for the vanity panel though. Really? Just a wedge?

The Caterham looks great from low down, from an higher angle however...

Hopefully this isn't their final livery because I miss the yellow already.

Woah...

'Okay guys, testing starts tomorrow!'

'There's been some new rule changes, what we gonna do!?'

That seems to be the gist of it. They've merely shoved that on the end of their existing car.

I find this situation crazy, 12 days to test the cars, and here we are with installation laps being started with only 20 minutes to go! It's like college days when the library is full of students rushing to finish their project by the 5pm deadline...

Ironic how one of only two proper front wings fails. Hopefully Mercedes and Ferrari prove the rest of F1 and their frankly offensive designs.

Red Bull's is close, but not really cigar.

Edit: never mind.

Actually i had one of the first cheesy jokes for the 2014 season lined up, but then i realized the merc isn't a schlong car... :( :

"Seems his schlong absorbed the brunt of the impact there".

(remember that one boys ).
