My brain couldn't cope with words ending in the last two letters in that order. I got them the wrong way around on try 2, but every word I thought of ended in the wrong order...

I was racking my brain moving those three letters around and coming up with a bunch of nonsense. Felt kind of dumb when it finally hit me.

I wonder how he got so much for what is the same as the game show Lingo but without the starting letter:

Which was based on MasterMind, which came out in the 70s as a similar board game. MasterMind itself was probably based on Bulls and Cows, which may have been around since the 19th century.

Bad starting word didn't help. If I'd used my normal one, I'd have been much better off...

True....but then what have they paid for? If it gets ads/paywalled what's to stop people migrating to Word Master, Hello Wordl or something else. If it's for the name and recognition how do you cash in on that without monetising it.

I see that Richard Osman was thinking about this too:

They are paying for the group of users that utilize it and its viral status. Trying to monetize it works for the original engineer who created it but whoever buys it from him and changes it to the point where it is no longer popular will be left holding the bag. I will be surprised if the ROI on this is positive for the NYT.

Rhyming!
