Would you want a Forza style DLC system in GT games?

I know that DLC threads are getting a bit boring now (they all tend to be wishlists nowadays...), but I was wondering whether anyone here would think a "Forza style" DLC system would work for the GT franchise, be it in content and distribution.

By that, I mean stuff like "launch day bonus" and "themed DLC", like the IGN and the Muscle Car pack for FM4, as well as something like the "Season Pass" which saves you some dosh if you want to buy all the content.

I would personally like that approach, though it does obviously have its negative points. It could become incredibly pricey after a while, as we've seen with Forza DLC and other games that are almost reliant on the stuff (*cough*Call of Duty*cough*), and it will be quite annoying if the packs end up being like the first batch that was made available a few months ago,

Though the Scion FR-S at least has been 'confirmed' as future DLC for GT5, so we can expect a minimum of one 2012 car being added to the game's gargantuan car roster. At least it's better than a batch of Touring Cars that look suspiciously like glorified Race Modifications.

Anywho, back on topic. To conclude, would you think that a Forza-esque DLC system would work for the GT franchise, or should PD stick with the system they have now and release content updates "every two months or so"? Would you even want such a system implemented in the first place?

That is not DLC, but money.

DLC on launch day is just sick.

This. I call it a scam. Why release stuff for so much money or even a little when it could be in the game originally? Simple answer, fine how it is.

Because adding it to the release will degrade the quality of graphics/gameplay and other things which have to be put on the disk. I would rather have a great looking game and play a little extra for DLC than a terrible looking game with a ton of extras on the disc.

What about games that already have them on the disc and you buy the DLC just to get an unlock code?

People complain that we never get any DLC, but then when we finally do, they complain about the cost.. So I don't have an opinion on your question and I'm going to keep my mouth shut.

That's like a waiter giving you a plate of food at a resteruant and then saying “And Sir, the cutlery will be £5.50 extra.”

If it means more DLC than yes. And people who say that the current system is fine are insane, barely anything new every 2 months? Give me a break.

Well they've sold a game then they're saying on release day here's some DLC that will make life easier for you.

So you'd prefer to just keep dishing out money?

It's not like they can make content any faster you know. Remember? 6 months for a car, and who knows how long it takes for a track.

Your comment is both for and against the OP's idea.

What Turn 10(or more likely, MS) is doing with DLC for Forza 4 is extremely disrespectful to their costumers. charging money for stuff that's finished before release, and starting on DLC right after release is BS. DLC is supposed to extend the life of the game. In stead it has grown into just another milking process.

Where is the "I'd like it to be different but not like Forza's" tab? I don't mind the every 2 months a DLC, in my mind that's great. I do like that Forza takes what their community ask's for though.

Release day DLC is just an extra money scam..

Turn10's DLC is great in terms of the content. It's not good in terms of how it's shuffled out so frequently for a high price.

PD's first DLC was a joke. A joke. So....it's a tough call.

If PD could shuffle out new and current cars every 2 months, then they should. For a modest price.

So you'd prefer to just keep dishing out money?
If in the end I pay $60 for NEW content, (not just re-done versions of cars that are already in the game,) then yes.

The 2 months isn't the problem, it's the stupid RM cars, the "new" FT-86, which is probably just a re-done version of the one that's already in the game, and the ridiculous price.

This man has a point.

I think a better description of what "Forza style DLC" actually is needs to be given, because the OP (and most of the discussion in this thread) has been rallied around launch day DLC even though GT5 has been on shelves for over a year now.

As 'Mac K' said earlier, you have got a point. I'll try to see if I can add a new tab to the poll (I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to editing threads and forums). Cheers for pointing out an option I completely overlooked!

True, there may need to be some added clarity in the description. I assumed that most people here would know what I was on about with "Forza style DLC" (i.e. not just FM4). But the thread is about such downloadable content being made available in the Gran Turismo FRANCHISE, not just GT5.

You're familiar with Codemasters' business model then...

One thing - as long as dlc doesn't come between me and 100%/trophies, then it ought to be 'anything goes', which doesn't seem to be the case with Dirt3 at least.

Maybe if the games were cheaper to begin with, then you could pick n mix features to tailor the game to your specific areas of interest.

Basic GT6: £20
+ photomode £2.50
+ online £7.50
+ ability to trade tunes £2.50
etc

for instance.

Then maybe if features aren't popular, they'll stop wasting time with developing them and come up with something better.

As for Forza, I can't really comment, since I don't have an xbox, but I know players usually scorn PD and the GT series for lack of DLC, so maybe theirs has something to offer.

Dlc is fine if there is a good balance between greed and respect to the customer and fan base. PD has so far been nothing but 100% respective of their fan base and that is why It has always been a pleasure to buy and enjoy their stuff.

It dtill is, but i feel for the first Time with gt5 they have taken a small step toward greed not because I think its fair to expect them to add all this content for free but because the of pricing the dlc so high

That's not how it works. Well, with the possible exception of the 360. I know that the past two Forzas required a second install disc so you could have access to all the content. But with Blu-ray, space for content of all kinds isn't a problem. I've heard that GT5 doesn't even use an entire layer of a disc.

As for Forza style, the reason that they can crank out so much of it is because they farm out contract work to a number of modeling studios. Contracting is more expensive than doing it yourself but it saves time, and Micro$oft is rich out the wazoo. "Release Day" DLC for a price is a rip-off though. Plus, I really don't like doing everything the mob wants, because you end up with a laundry list of almost nothing but supercars and a few race cars. And that's not what I'm all about.

I prefer Gran Turismo's attitude of offering cars you wouldn't think of racing, or that are common but you might think are boring. I've been surprised how much fun it is to race common cars like the VW Golf and Civics, which can be as much fun in their own right as the Beemers and Corvettes. And if you've grown bored of the HUNDREDS of high performance cars and race cars in GT5 already... well, you must not have to work for a living and can race 20 hours a day. ;)

I'd like some mega car packs with 20 or so in them, and track packs with 5 or more, but I can deal with stuff every couple of months or so whatever PD does, and can buy it without any problem.

GT5 already has themed DLC, the theme for the 1st was Japanese fantasy touring cars, 2nd will probably be Japanese classics, then Japanese Super GT cars, Skyline the missing links etc.

You can't call it "Japanese Fantasy Touring Cars" due to the SRT8. :p

That and the X2011 but the majority are that theme. They put in the odd non Japanese car in to keep us happy.

I thought the X2011 would be considered Japanese...?

Yes, I meant by it not being a touring car. Although I don't think it should be considered Japanese either.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. Oh who knows what a good name for that car pack could be? ... "GT5 Car Pack 1" :)
