The sixth picture you show is very famous, one of the most famous from all of World War 2. It supposedly shows a small submarine, suspected to be Japanese, shooting a torpedo at one of our ships. I saw a "Histories Mysteries" or some similar show on the History Channel about it. It was very interesting.
Anyway, just to the left of the center of hte picture you can see a small black object sticking vertical out of the water. It's short and hard to see. Behind it, to the left, you can see three things that look like water spraying in the air. This is supposed to be the propeller slapping the surface of the water and causing a roostertail. You can follow a line from this "submarine" down and to the left, straight to a ship where there appears to be an explosion of water. That is supposedly the torpedo hitting the ship.
There have always been rumors about the Japanese getting a sub into Pearl Harbor but it has never been proven. You know those mystery shows never actually tell you the answer. I've never seen this pic in person, only on the show, so I couldn't tell how clear this image is. I'm kind of awed looking at it; it seems to me that undeniably that object is a submarine shooting at the ship. But it could also be the mark left behind by a torpedo dropped from a plane. I'm about 50/50 on both theories.
I don't know if you knew that and that's why you chose the picture, but if you didn't now you have something to research. Awesome finds.

I didn't know the history of the picture, but that's an aweosme story behind it:tup:

I can see the "torpedo", I sorta find it difficult to believe that the Japanese had a sub in Peal Harbor, but it sure looks like it!

It is hard to believe when you read the usual history about Pearl Harbor. But, looking at this picture, it is also difficult, for me, anyway, to doubt that it didn't happen. It looks so possible, but it has never been proven. I wish I could watch that show now, it was so intersting. They analysed every aspect of the events and that picture and all that stuff.

Beautiful pics, skip. 👍 I think it's a Hellcat, but the plane in the third pic look really badass. :D I liked almost every plane from the WWII era, no regard to nationality. They were so beautiful....... I hope we'll never see a war of that scale again though(or any war, really). Politicians start them, "people" always lose.

My grandfather was a crew on a Japanese submarine during World War II, I think the sub was called I-25 or 26 or something. I can't remember. He hated that war, never talked about it. I found out what he did during the war, after I came to the U.S. I was reading a book about Japanese subs in my middle school library, I saw his photo and name in it! I called and asked my dad, who was in Japan. He had absolutely no idea.

On the Pearl Harbor sub thing. I believe that Japanese (mini)sub was sunk near Pearl Harbor, just day or two before the attack.

Yeah, it was called a minisub. I know there was one sunk in Pearl Harbor, but this picture supposedly shows that it shot at one of our ships before it got sunk. I wish we knew If it was true or not.

Very cool pictures. 👍 Photo Journalism is definately a very interesting field.
I love photos of WW2.

You can only imagine what he's saying.

The picture of the 5 TBF Avengers was on the cover of a Talking Heads album.

My friend from high school's father was a PT boat skipper in WWII. He wouldn't talk about his combat either, but we found him in a couple books, and he did some pretty intense stuff in combat.

a6m5- That's pretty messed up that your grandfather made his way into a history book!
It's not too bad. According to the book, he was just one of the crew members and I don't believe he made any important decisions(maybe except what's for breakfast or something.). My mom made a photo copies of those photos in the book, but we haven't seen them in few years, so I might have lost them. :ouch:

Battles back in WWII must've been intense. It almost never involved elctronic or computer anything for most combatants. You manually aimed and pulled the trigger. They also shot and blew up more, because attacking wasn't very efficient back then. :scared:

Edit:

I love this photo of the D-Day landings. In fact, I'm using it as my wallpaper at the moment.
Whoa. "Saving Private Ryan"!

It's just a tad too big to wrap in image tags. ;)

That was my wallpaper a few weeks ago. 👍

My friend's dad was in Vietnam and killed a few Vietcong in hand to hand combat. He gets really quiet whenever someone says anything about it.

I also know a man that was exposed to large ammounts of Agent Orange. He was also zipped up in a body bag and left for dead because he got knocked unconscious and his pulse dropped so low they couldn't find it. He would have died if he didn't wake up.

Awesome pictures, that must have been a suprise to find your grandfather in a history book a6m5. :)

I thought that picture was of the second flag raised at Iwo Jima. The first one was too small, so they raised a bigger one. I can't remember, I saw it on the History Channel, again, a long time ago.

Oh, Omnis. It looks like Babe Ruth dressed up in a Darth Vader mask and cape. I never knew he had stripes in his sleeves and pants.

Greycap
Is that the first US flag on Iwo Jima?

Actually no, it isnt. The first flag went up on Iwo Jima without a photographer. When the newsmen on the flagship realised this, they sent up another group with a flag and took that image. It was on the History Channel.

Great find skip 👍

Indeed, you're right, I should have remembered that... :banghead:

The first one was the "real" one and the second one was the publicity one. :)

I always enjoy looking at pictures of WWII. Fascinating period of history, but of course a very brutal one.

The only person I know of in my immediate family that fought in the war is my (now deceased) great uncle who fought with the Polish Underground. He never talked about it when he was alive, since I only found this out after his death, while reading his obituary. But I can see why, since after the war was over, he was captured by the Soviets, and was to be sent to a gulag. Fortunately, he managed to escape before being sent and made his way to Sweden. Would have been a great story to hear, but I can only imagine the horrific memories it would bring back.

Yeah that sub was saposable the one that fired first. I saw that same show, and i saw somthing smiliar when i went a show at pearl harbor 4 years ago on december 7th (the day pearl harbor was attacked) (well at least the date) and also went on the Arizona Memorial very interesting stuff, and i'm a war freak, so i'm really digging this kind of stuff, awsome find though!
