Xbox 360 doomed?

If the Gears Triology moved to the PS3, do you think that would doom the 360?

So, there are two major console exclusives for the Xbox 360 and they are Gears of War and Forza. Those are what one buys a 360 for. However, at GDC, Epic games mentioned that they would "love" to bring the Gears Trilogy to the PS3. And even went as far as saying that they own the series and PS3 owners just might see the trilogy on their console eventually.

Proof: http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/8661.html

So, if that were to happen, what reason would one have to get a 360? Forza? But is Forza really powerful enough to keep the console alive? That about the next X-box? If Gears isn't exclusive any more, would MS even bother with another console?

Microsoft dose seem to be trying hard to revive their old exclusive titles liike PGR and still Halo, but...the Halo's craze has died out, and unless Lucid Games picks up PGR5, I don't see that come out any time soon.

What are your thoughts on this? And just for fun, here's a poll:

If Gears of War came to the PS3 would you still 360?

I don't think it'll be doomed and I think the next-gen Xbox will still be a fan favourite. Playstation has lost a lot of ground and goodwill amongst the casual market this time around.

But Playstation is gaining a lot of that ground back and, internationally, is outselling the 360. And with the PSP dropping in price, the PS3 should follow suit before too long, which will help it gain more ground.

EDIT: Also, MS has been loosing a lot of it's exclusives and Sony seems to be gaining some while keeping others. I mean DC Universe Online, Resistance, Gran Turismo, Uncharted The Last Guardian...I don't know. I think in the end, Sony has won this round of the console wars despite starting out WAY behind. Nintendo jumped out in the lead early, but it's sales have been doing a nose dive as of late. The 360 took a step and fell on it's face, but got right back up and took off, and Sony was kinda the tortoise in the race. Slow and steady, and now we see it pulling ahead 5 years later.

Not at all, Gears of War isn't even that great of a series IMO.

A lot of people don't buy a console because of the exclusives by the way. I bought a 360 but it was for neither Forza or GOW, it was because it was the more affordable of the two at the time of purchase and most good games are multiplatform these days anyway.

This!

It all depends on the gamer. I find my internet gaming more satisfactory on Live than I do PSN. Exclusives really don't hold part in it for me. I've had 2 games on both systems and end up playing them on the 360 more.

it's gears not Halo. gears is easily one of the most overrated games of our times. I have both from their release dates and still haven't even felt compelled to finish gears 2 off in all this time.

Also forget about exclusives, the third party games generally look better and run with a crisper more stable framerate on the 360. And PSN is clearly no match for LIVE. Also most 360 owners prefer the 360 controller to the PS3 one especially for FPS.

So
+ better 3rd party versions
+ Halo franchise
+ better, faster, more robust online service
+ better controller

will keep the 360 alive and well until xbox 3 releases.

If this had happened 3 years ago? Perhaps. But these days no one is going to go "Hey, Gears is on the PS3, so I guess I won't get a 360."

I was always under the impression that Xbox won this generation war, though perhaps all the people buying PS3's when GT5 was released helped in that area (myself included). I don't own an Xbox.

As for controllers "Most Xbox owners prefer the Xbox controller?" thats quite silly, are you surprised that people will stick with the choice they made? Personally i like the PS3 controller, it has taken and passed the test of time, the controller is what? 16 years old now? But for shooters, i would never use a controller, anybody would have to be mad to use a controller when you can use a mouse and keyboard.

That's wonderful for 360 fans.... For PS3 fans its really no big deal since the 360 ports on ps3 still play the same and offer the exact same gaming experience. I own both systems but I buy my multi platform games on PS3 because it is my system of choice for many reasons. One being Xbox live gold is not really worth it if you do not use it to play online and you "NEED" it for Netflix, joykill....

I'm pretty sure others who choose PlayStation as their system of choice do not care for any of those opinionated advantages as they are not substantial benefits. Everything has pros and cons. But no the 360 would not be doomed.... It has it's fan base, they aren't going anywhere.

1. Not necessarily true any more. When the systems were first released, yes. But, it was a gaming PC verses a lot of brand new technology. But now...now you have people saying the the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 is better in every way to the 360 version. And most modern multi-platform games, it's really hard to tell the difference between the PS3 and 360 versions.

2. Halo is Halo and without Bungie attached to it any more, who knows if 343 Studios will be able to deliver the quality that Bungie did.

3. Except, to do ANYTHING online it costs you $60 a year. Literally, to play with friends, use Netflix and a lot of other things you NEEEEEEED a Gold membership. PSN is free and works just as well as Live does. Seriously, my online experience with PSN has been more stable than Live. And Plus...doesn't get you enough to pay for it.

4. ironic statement 'cause when the controller for the Xbox was first realised, it was criticized. And personally, neither controller is really that wonderful, but the 360's controller made my hands hurt more than the PS3 controller.

Here's a better question...why does it always have to be a contest between two systems?

Last time I checked, video games were supposed to be about fun, not about who won the 'console war'.

Exactly. I bought a 360 first because it was so much cheaper than the PS3, and at the time it basically had all the games I wanted to play.

I only bought a PS3 after the slim price drop. The PS3 was just too expensive at the beginning of this gen for the average joe. It's always been a better product, but the price difference wasn't justified for most people.

A keyboard sucks hairy donkey balls for FPS. I'll use a flightstick/trackball over a keyboard/mouse any day of the week on the PC. I play Crysis Wars online with the 360 controller. Sitting hunched over a desk to play is lame.

Don't think so, Gears is big because they pushed it massively, same with Halo, when underneath it is just another well produced but story and gameplay-wise very conventional shooter. MS could have easily turned another franchise into Halo and GOW.

1. I stand 100% by my opinion that the VAST MAJORITY of third party titles are better on the 360

2. Who cares? It still has the Halo name, period.

3. I'm not a welfare patient $50 is nothing to me. You can get game/live membership bundles and now PSN charges too, I couldn't download the KZ3 SP demo when it first came out without paying $50(shich I didn't). You don't need gold for netflix, silver is good enough.
PSN does not work as well as LIVE does, for starters LIVE is way, way, way, way, way, way, way faster. Supports party chat, voice messaging, shows friends games currently being played etc.

4. I really couldn't care less about your hands, sounds like your problem not mine and the 360 was voted one of the best controllers of all time.

All in all your thread is a failure of epic proportions because the 360 will be just fine. I'll bet you believe all the 2012 hype too "DOOMED" hahahaha :dunce:

Shock thread title,

Was the PS3 doomed when/has the xbox has Gear of war exclusive.

I own an Xbox and never played Gears, am I missing something?

Except they really aren't these days, so it doesn't matter what your opinion is.

2. Who cares? It still has the Halo name, period.
Halo hasn't been the main heavy-hitter on the console since Modern Warfare 2. And Bungie leaving the franchise was a very publicized and controversial decision. So I will reiterate his point: Halo may not have the momentum that it has had in the past going into future games.

and now PSN charges too,
No it doesn't.

You can get game/live membership bundles
You can get game/PSN Plus bundles, too.

I couldn't download the KZ3 SP demo when it first came out without paying $50(shich I didn't).
Oh boy. A week difference. You know, like 99% of the demos that are on XBL are/were.

You don't need gold for netflix, silver is good enough.
No it isn't. You can't even use facebook without a Gold subscription, let alone Netflix.

shows friends games currently being played etc.
So does PSN.

4. I really couldn't care less about your hands, sounds like your problem not mine and the 360 was voted one of the best controllers of all time.
I want scientific studies proving this statement if you are going to pull this crap.

Except they are and your opinion doesn't change it.

Anything that sells 3.5M copies IN A DAY is a `heavy hitter` (your wording)
and your speculation of the future isn`t even worth beans.

I wouldn`t waste 5 minutes of someone elses time on facebook let alone my own time.

My point about the bundles was to the guy too poor to afford $50 for 13 months of LIVE. And YES PSN charges now KZ3 SP demo was not free when it first came out you needed the $49.99 whatever they call it PSN package.

Learn to use google on your own.

Except the Halo is the 37th best selling series. Yup. 37th. They are tied at 30 million units with Tekkan, Medal of Honor, Street Fighter, Kirby, James Bond and Tony Hawk. Yeah. They've sold slightly better than Tony Hawk and when is the last time that series produced a good title? Even combined with Gears of War sales (11 millions) the 360's exclusives don't sell all that well.

And the really sad part? That's the 360's best selling exclusive title. GT5 has sold over twice as much and Nintendo...still has the best selling franchises. And you can't forget GTA. It's sold 9million more units than GT5 and it started out life as a Playstation exclusive.

In fact, game for game, Gran Turismo and GTA are the two best selling franchises of all time.

Never see Nintendo in these disputes these days, when i'd put a bet they are up there. Wii sports sold something like 75million. With that said, they are probably still leading the way.

Both GT and GTA launched in 1997, Halo didn't exist until 2001 and hasn't had nearly as many titles to add to their sales numbers.

Grand Theft Auto has 14 titles under the name.
Gran Turismo has 12 titles under the name.
Halo has 5.

The fact they've sold as much as those titles you listed is impressive as they've all had way more titles as well.

Except Wii sports sales don't really count 'cause it was bundled with the system and, of course, Nintendo cheated and counted the console sales as game sales. Just like they counted the Wii Fit balance board in with hardware sales.

Nintendo has the two best selling console exclusives...but...there's been a Mario game every year since 1981 and their other console exclusive is Pokemon. But who knows what Nintendo includes as "sales" for that. I wouldn't be surprised if DVD sales were included in that number. There's also 45 titles within the Pokemon franchise.

Also, the two best selling Halo games were Halo 3 (8.1 million) and Halo 2 (8 million). The worst selling non-portable GT games are GT5P (5.2 million) and GT5 (6.37 million) and sales for GT5, at least, are climbing.

And Halo has 6 games including Halo Wars.

Forgot about that one, still half of what GT has out.

Also, the worst selling GT game was actually Concept 2001 with 440,000 than Concept 2002 with 1.12 million and GT4P with 1.4 million.

Although I still prefer the PS3 hardware and software exclusives (I have both so I'm not really biased), I don't see any indication that PS3 will ever overtake the 360 in the near future.

  • The 360 consistently takes the lion share of FPS sales (still the biggest, most important gaming genre to the mainstream US audience).
  • The 360 has a better online multi-player architecture. Whether you like it or not, the online subscription model works from a profitability standpoint, and just about ensures that the online architecture is going to scale, and remain robust. This is also a reason I think they always overtake PS3 by a large margin in FPS sales.
  • Microsoft has more money to buy exclusives AND timed exclusives of games and DLC. I think going forward we're going to see less and less exclusive titles, and more and more timed-exclusive DLC. Fallout Dead Money comes to mind.
  • The 360 hardware has always been marketed as the cheaper platform. Not by very much, but it's a significant psychological barrier for first time "current gen" console buyers (read: parents buying for their kids).

Microsoft has proven time and time again that you can win the war despite having inferior technology (Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, etc. etc. etc.).

Do you even own a 360?

If not, then why does this bother you so much?

The 360 has firmly established itself as the best selling HD console in the NA market, is doing pretty admirably in the EU/others market and might as well give up in Japan. So it might be accurate to argue that the 360 would not enjoy the position it has without the contribution of GoW 1 & 2, but to suggest now that MS NEEDS GoW 3 to stay viable in NA and EU... well that just sounds pretty silly to me.

Furthermore I would even conclude that without Halo the 360 would still maintain a strong sales position in NA & EU. I think there are now millions of people who simply prefer the 360 to the PS3, just because.

However respecting the chaotic history of console gaming, everything could change again in the next generation.

If I'm following this thread right the xbox originally had the most exclusives right?
So it sold more consoles right?
Now that it hasn't got many exclusives it's doomed right?

How did PS survive when Xbox had most of the exclusives. Shouldn't it be doomed, right?

This does not compute in my head.
