Interesting news. If they're following PST the conference is in 5 hours.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, Microsoft is holding a press event and is said to be making a major announcement that we will not want to miss. What Microsoft is announcing hasn’t been officially revealed and has been kept a huge secret, until now.
Details for a new product called the Xbox Surface have leaked out. While it could be illegitimate, there are some big possibilities that it can in-fact be real and coming very soon.
The spec sheet that was leaked for the Xbox Surface details a tablet with support for wireless controllers, multi-touch, and much more. It almost seems as if it could be a portal Xbox system, but that is pure speculation.
Below is the leaked spec sheet, and hopefully by the end of the day, Microsoft will put some closure to what the Xbox Surface really is at their briefing at 3:30PM.

As it stands we don't know for sure yet whether the tablet Microsoft is going to announce today is an Xbox branded portable console or just a normal Windows 8 tablet which happens to run some games (like the Sony Tablet S). The spec sheet looks quite real but could still be bogus.

I also touched on the announcement in the Windows 8 thread,

Would also assume that it is a regular Windows 8 tablet, just with the Xbox-badge to get some additional sales.

No way it is just a tablet.

What tablet do you know of that has 4 headphone jacks, 4 USB 3.0 ports, Component video, HDMI, optical audio, Ethernet, etc etc etc on a 7 inch screen that requires a 350 W power supply?

Definitely not.

Either this spec sheet is bogus, this is the next XBOX (tablet device -controller?) , or this is an entirely new gaming venture from Microsoft.

Or you know.. lt could just be a model of this with XBOX compatibility.

Something along the lines of a touchscreen smart TV powered by Microsoft XBOX. You know that whole "one box" for your living room thing?

Either way, we'll know more in a few hours. This explains why they're skipping Gamescon.

If you split it down, it's a more powerful Wii U. I hope not, but that's what it looks like.. The next gen Xbox?

That is a much, much more powerful Wii U...

If those specs are correct that GPU is something a little bit more advanced than an AMD 7870; which is still a very nice card. Considering that card runs $350.... I don't know.....

It could also be a 7850 with an increased memory bus with core clocks much higher.

A SCSI drive? That seems odd to me. Also a Blu Ray drive that's not for watching films with? Why bother?

Games.... I don't like having 25 discs to install a game lol.

Kind of frustrating (if true) they are only going with 1.2-4 GB VRAM. Definitely no multi-monitor support with a single console.

Now that I am looking closer at the tech specs (GPU specifically) those sheets have much different listings. I'm not going to put faith in either.

Yeah but if it has the capability, why not watch films on it too? Maybe they're not licensed to allow people to watch films with it but you'd think they'd pay for that otherwise it's something the PS3 can do that whatever this is can't, even though the hardware is already in place.

Also I'd be shocked, no exaggeration, if we ever see multi-monitor support on a console. When you consider that a console's monitor is a TV, often a large one, and manufacturers would be crazy to provide such support when they could just not and make people buy more than one console, it just doesn't really make sense for them. After all, if you can and want to afford three or more TVs, you can afford two or more consoles.

Well, IF these specs are correct then I am sure they will be pushing LIVE subscription and streaming services. That is what we are in the process of moving to. Blu-Ray has still yet to penetrate the majority of movie sales.

"33.6 million unit U.S. household penetration" -Q3 2011

http://www.twice.com/article/478896-BDA_Sees_Blu_ray_Growth_For_Years_To_Come.php

34 million households out of approximately 115-120 million.
By the time it becomes majority it will be inferior, you know how it goes.

Personally, I haven't bought a Blu-Ray in years. I just stream.

I think we will see multi-monitor support in 1-2 generations AFTER this coming one. Really it is just a hardware capacity issue. Once hardware becomes cheap enough it will be adopted into consoles.

But, aren't consoles with tablet controllers (Wii U / whatever this rumored thing is) technically multi-monitor? lol. Not exactly what we are talking about but it is a start.

PEOPLE: Read the spec sheets. Whatever these documents are listing is NOT a tablet.

haha, this sounds amazing, don't know if it'd be my thing but it surely sounds impressive at this stage and an interesting approach from Microsoft for sure.

And I don't think this is going to be any less than $600 USD. With the power it's pushing in that form factor, no way.

Also, check out this link:

http://www.neowin.net/news/leak-xbox-surface-gets-detailed

Editor's Note: To clarify, this appears to be two devices: a 7.0-inch tablet and a "stationary computing device". Check the document carefully so you don't confuse the tablet specifications with those of the stationary device. Could this be the next Xbox?

Even more interesting, love these kinds of leaks!

It could be that slight divide that Microsoft was looking for! A tablet for the family? and a super powerful almost pc-like console for the hardcore gamers?

And that makes much more sense 'cause I was really struggling to imagine how they could fit all of that power inside a tablet.

But I'm also seeing a lot of word around that this is fake, so I'm still not holding my breath. Waiting on the announcement now.

This would be particularly good for long car/plane rides. If it is a tablet that is.

Well, if I were looking at buying a console (if that's what this is) and I saw that PS3s played Blu Ray discs and this Xbox Surface didn't, I'd probably buy the PS3. But you're probably right, the slow uptake of Blu Ray probably makes this less of an issue from a business perspective.

And you've got a point, a small 7-inch display would make an awesome rear view mirror. Imagine having three of them for rear view and wing mirrors, coupled with three full size monitors... Yeah, that'll never happen.

I'm really looking forward to buying a new over priced game console that won't have any good games for at least 2 years.

But PC Advisor live blog is saying the more powerful Win 8 tablet is running an i5 processor.

There are 2 versions, an RT version and a Pro version. RT runs an ARM processor, Pro runs an i5.
