I just downloaded service pack 2..................and 5 minutes later uninstalled it!.....nothing worked......it was totally useless......windows security centre did not load up......nothing could be enabled......and it shut down norton antivirus and would not allow me to activate it.......help and support did not work.....the startup was fast at the black screen....but alot slower at the blue (windows is starting up) screen. Without a firewall, internet connection (sp2 broke it!) or antivirus I couldn't connect to the net....and did not want to because it would be infected in 1 second without any protection......on uninstalling the computer finally reverted to sp1 and blue screened a few times.....now everything works but some programs don't activate in the startup bar......and it gets major errors on screen......its ok now but I wish I had not downloaded it.....I remind you this is the proper release on windows update today......I am going to wait a few months for people to experience all the problems and moan to microsoft before I download it again......I bet you there will be so many problems that they will release sp2a really soon! A real let down for such a big update.......maybe it has worked for the rest of you fine.......but this is yet another pile of ***t that bill gates has released......jeez......they can't even make a new windows work with an old one.....the openly admit it will cause problems!!! what ***p software!

I think instead of telling other people to change their programs to work with sp2, Microsoft should make sp2, so it works for those programs. Maybe in 1 year, everything will be fixed.

I recently found out I can't play F1 Challenge. 👎

**** Microsoft

Oh yeah, no problems from wmp

Hmm.. I still have to see any problems with XP SP2.. Running it on this (ma gaming / phun rig, unsecured, no antivir etc..), on my laptop (serious ****, VB Enterprise Ed., .NET suite, Antivir etc..)... As said above - the only thing I've seen is the Nero Burning Rom warning, which caused Nero to work as usual....

I still can't believe that microsoft can get away with releasing half assed software and expect users to magically sort it out to work......shouldnt MS be doing the work to make it compatable! They are even asking users to make changes to the registery to make it not break programs! how do you expect the adverage computer user (and I mean adverage!) to do stuff like that! Releasing software that don't work is not a good idea.....when xp first came out it had HUGE problems...I bought it in 2003 and by then SP1 had JUST about sorted it out!!! With anything MS.........wait a year before getting it!!......I'm gonna wait now till SP2 is sorted.....my computer at the moment is not in any huge danger without sp2.....not had any problems with my current setup and up to date AV. I only really wanted SP2 for the small things like the pop up blocker, the download manager and the firewall........why can't MS release them separately so I don't need to download crashing service packs.....Give it a few months an I bet SP2a will be released.......hell! even major companies have refused to install it! No doubt it will be right in the end......but thats not the point.......it should be right on release!

I haven't been having many problems either, but with F1C being my main racing game, I'm a little pissed. How much work would it take to make it compatible with current apps? Maybe they should've continued working on Longhorn.

Like I said earlier, Microsoft told them (the application developers) to download the SP2 release candidate to see if their apps would work with SP2 or not. Frustrate users should be blaming the developers for not getting off their lazy arses and testing SP2- compliancy. I think SP2 is a good thing. If half of the stuff in SP2 was in SP1, the Blaster worm wouldn't even exist along with thousands of other critical worms. It was those average users that spread those worms and I think it's good that Microsoft has plugged up the holes to help prevent them from doing it again.

Yeah I know service pack 2 is good.....bt I really want to wait for a while till it is sorted out properly.....either buy developers or Microsoft....I'm not doubting the quality of there eventual software releases....SP1 was excellent but it takes a while to get it completely right.....the moans by end users only starts when it get released so from that point Service Pack 2 has to start getting sorted out.....It can't really be sorted until normal users have tried it out because they have the biggest varitey of app's and programs to test it on.......I guess I was one of the unlucky ones....But I still really want sp2.......

Ok, I've done a clean install of Windows XP Pro and SP2 on my computer. Here's my problem... I'm trying to install videocard drivers for my videocard. However, the OS keeps installing generic drivers whenever I remove them and restart/scan for hardware changes in the device manager. Is there anyway around this? I've even booted into safe mode and it does it there too.

Download updated drivers from your manufacturer's site and install them ...

www.nvidia.com
www.ati.com
www.matrox.com
That won't take care of what he's talking about. He's asking if there is a way to stop windows from autorecognizing new hardware so it will not automatically install the drivers.

I'm not sure if you can disable that or not, although seems to me that it should work fine without uninstalling the generic drivers. Or you could uninstall the drivers and just install the ones you have, without restarting.

That's my problem... I can't install the drivers without scanning for hardware changes in the device manager after uninstalling the generic drivers. As soon as I do that, XP SP2 immediately installs the generic drivers without my permission. Because of that, I can't install my ATI drivers that I want to use instead.

I've never had this happen to me before... maybe I should uninstall SP2 and install the drivers first before upgrading to SP2? It seems like I'm having more problems with this clean install than the other times ive reinstalled XP on that computer.

I also can't seem to install my sound card drivers because XP is apparently missing something .dll related.

Interesting. I've never heard of anything like that before.

Downgrading to SP1 should help the problem, although I can't say for sure.

I was wondering if someone could tell me where I find the Service Pack 2 install files that are located on the computer to delete them......I tried to install SP2 and it would not work so now I want to delete the installer which is sizeable file......however I cannot find it.......I have always started the install from windows update.....I says download time 0 mins 0 sec.....this is because the file is already on my computer but where is it!!!!!

I do have a thing in add / remove programs called hotfix (sp2)......however this seems to be somthing different as I dont have SP2 installed.......

Does anyone know how to delete the SP2 install program???

Any help would be really really great.....

Thanks,

Robin

So, Robin, any idea why it would not install? The only reason I know of for SP2 or any other Microsoft patch to not install is because the operating system you're using is STOLEN.

Perhaps you deserve your lost 125MB of disk space.

WHAT! .....No you don't understand! I do have a real windows xp home edition (I can prove it ya want!) I installed service pack 2 and it was fine.......but some of my programs did not work with it so I reverted to service pack 1.......what I want to know is how to remove the install files that were downloaded from windows update as windows update does not show you where it installed the files to.....

The service pack files are downloaded to C:/WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles and possibly also to C:/WINDOWS/$NtServicePackUninstall$ (hidden folder), I believe. Now, I am not sure whether or not these are all the files downloaded from windows update (as in every update you download goes here) or if it is just the service pack files. Also, there isn't really a way to tell what file goes to what service pack. I suggest you search Microsoft's website for the answer.

To remove it, you can go to Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs, but if you would have read Microsofts warning, it tells you that it may corrupt some programs so you may need to re-install them. I think you should just re-install the programs that don't work.

my XP disc is XP SP2, so i get it when i install windows.

Thank you for that! It was SOOOOO helpful.

Back to the most recent issue at hand ...

You can't just "delete SP2", you have to uninstall / remove it. That is done, as has been said, in the Add / Remove Programs Control Pannel. Though you would probably be better served to reinstall your applications that don't function or figure out why they don't function. It could very well be a firewall related issue which is easily resolved with a little education.
