Alright well I was racing in B spec mode this morning, game froze, then my ps3 beeped and red light flashed. I turned off PS3 immediately from the back, waited a few seconds, turned back on, it beeps at me several times, then flashes red. Its a 60gb fatboy that I got on release date. I need help fixing this as I do not want to lose my GT5 game save...and here I was trying to hold out until the end of dec when they were going to let us do game saves. **** what a horrible day. Any help guys? I need a guide or something online. everytime I search yahoo, it sends me to a site to try and buy some guide. Any freebies out there?

thanks for any help.

UPDATE: So I dropped it off at a computer repair place last fri that said it would only take 24hrs. Went into saturday to pick it up, said it wasnt ready, should be ready Mon. Call Mon at 4pm and said oh well it should be ready by the end of the week. Trying my hardest not to get pissed off because my game is stuck in there and I dont want them to ruin it anymore then it already is. Called them again today, they say they cant fix it. So I have wasted a week because these assholes said they could fix it, but did nothing, absolutely nothing!

On top of that, the update I was patiently waiting for (1.05 for game saves) came out exactly 4 days after my ps3 YLOD. Merry Christmas!

Hopefully this other place can fix it on Mon (guy sounded like he knew what he was talking about, and said he has fixed many in the past, and has 4 in the shop currently). If this doesnt work, I dont know what I will do. All I want is my game save back (cries)

Well, if you end up replacing the PS3 then just be sure and grab your drive and put it in the new one. Should be fine. As long as the drive isn't toast.

Check Youtube buddy there is a guy on there doing a few video's on it .. i fixed one of mine by watching him , but you will need some PCB Flux , Nail varnish remover and a heat gun plus a special screwdriver (forgot the name on the screw)
It is simple to do if you are confident with stripping/rebuilding PC's it is the same thing really.

Unfortunately PS3 drives are bound to the systems they were formated on.

You cannot put a harddisk from one PS3 into another, it won't work, it will only give you the option to reformat it losing everything.

The best thing to do to save the content is to get the YLOD fixed and transfer the data to a new PS3 as soon as possible because YLOD usually recur after a repair.

You cannot swop HDD from one PS3 to another without it asking to format the HDD in which case you would loose all the data from the YLOD PS3. Your only hope is to get your ylod repaired then buy another PS3 and do the data transfer before your YLOD PS3 bites the dust again.Or just buy a new PS3 and start again.

The drive from my YLODed launch day PS3 didn't work in my replacement slim PS3. As it turns out the drive is encrypted differently on each console.

I was able to bring my old PS3 back to life for a few hours by melting the CPU and GPU back to the motherboard using a heat gun and made a full system backup. Do a search for 'YLOD fix' or 'PS3 heat gun' on Google and you will find some tutorials. Unfortunately you won't be able to rescue your GT5 save game because copy-protected saves are not backed up.

I used these guys. I highly recomend them if your PS3 is out of warrenty or losing your hard drive data is unacceptable. They turned my PS3 around 1 one day and the whole thing only took a week. Would have gone faster too, but it was over Thanksgiving break. Cheaper and faster than Sony, keep your same console and harddrive data, and they'll upgrade your HDD while they're at it.

I promise i don't work for them, just thought i'd mention it.

If I get it repaired....I can hold out until the game save feature is incorporated at the end of the month (praying) by PD, correct? and then backup everything and swap it over?

Well, i had YLOD in my old and lovely 40gb FAT
soo, i decided buy a new 250gb SLIM

There is no way to repair the YLOD...
It back in a few days

I baked mine in the oven just this past weekend.

After reading alot of threads about YLOD's with GT5 my old Phat 60GB release was prolly on borrowed time.

So I decided it was time to crack it open and redo the thermal paste.
After finishing the job and firing it up well wouldn't you know it after about 20min. YLOD...
Fair enough prolly just some gaps in my new paste job(I shoulda checked before putting it back together)

So I took it apart again checked the paste for gaps(admittedly there was so my bad) Touched up the job and put it back together again.

Uh oh now it's instantly YLOD...now I've done it...
I am figuring when I tore it down the 2nd time I prolly yanked on the chips too much as I used Arctic Ceramique and that is pretty sticky stuff.

Okay then well I have no heat gun and I don't really think that is the best way to fix it anyway.
I decide it is better to use the bake in the oven trick(BGA soldering is done like that anyway for the most part)
So 10 minutes in the oven at 200C, give the chips some firm even pressure right after I took it out. Let it cool stuck it back together again.

Success!

Been running fine ever since for up to 12hrs of GT5

Im pretty sure I read somewhere on here where we would be allowed to copy game saves sometime around the end of this month. Was I dreaming? I cant seem to find any mention of it now. Calling repair shops around town, not having any luck. Dont feel too comfortable trying to repair myself. I guess I could try, I cant screw it up much more then it already is.

You do a transfer, not a backup. That will move the data (including the copy protected save file) over to the new PS3 via Ethernet.

Copy protected saves ARE included on the Data Backup option, but only when swapping hard drives on the SAME console. If you're switching to a new console the save data is indeed stored in the back up with the rest of the data, it just won't be enabled on the new PS3.

I'm not talking about a backup. I'm talking about a transfer. They're 2 totally different things.

ok that makes sense now. One other question, I mentioned it above, but didnt get a response. I swear KY said that we would be able to copy gamesave files by the end of this month or that it was "coming soon". I couldnt find it in the news section, I really dont trust my PS3 anymore (assuming I can get it back up and running) but if it does get fixed, I wont play it much until I can (hopefully) copy my game save over to a new ps3. I really dont want to lose all the cars I have....(over 200)

This

Also OP, don't give up before doing research and trying.

I changed the thermal paste immediately on my PS3 when the fan started hollering, and it wasn't really that hard to take apart and put back together.
If what it takes is to throw it in the oven, I say do it

ok so if I can bring my old ps3 back alive again, I will be able to transfer my current gt5 game save file over to a new ps3? Any instructions anywhere to do this? If this is true...you have truly made my day sir, after the shi*** day I have had.

My old fat 40gb went bang (Ylod) last friday with all my GT5 data 2.5mil credits and 6mil worth car I.E a lot of ******* time spent on it, I am lucky as I know someone that fixes them with a good success rate but I have just bought a new slim 250gb just to be safe, I am outraged at sony's lack of support on this issue of copy protected game data not transferring or being enabled on the new system which you have had to buy due to their own design flaw on the old one. When you spend that amount of money on a product you expect it to have a longer service life than 3yr's or at least good support setup but apparently not. I hope this issue does get addressed promptly as I can foresee many more people experiencing this same issue over the festive period as many will have had their console for over 3yr’s and eagerly await this game just to hear those telling sounds, to be told you have wasted your money and time! SORT IT SOON

thanks. I briefly read through everything. My current ps3 is at the shop getting fixed. Tomorrow morning my wife is buying me a new one for Christmas from best buy. I have a 10% off coupon, and they give you a 50 dollar gift card with any PS3 console purchase through tomorrow. My wife is the best! she knew how devistated I was about this one and possibly losing my game save. She also bought me my original ps3 (the one that broke) when they were first released. She stood in line at gamestop to reserve one for me.

Yeah, I was almost tempted. Instead I put some IC-7 Diamond on the chips and swapped in an APS-231 power supply. As it turns out, my launch 60 gig was one of the lucky ones that came with the 19 blade fan already. That's probably why it was still alive. Old paste was starting to dry out in one area, probably caught it just in time.

I transferred all my data, including saved games, from my fat 40g to a new slim line last week. It works. All you need is an ethernet cable.

This is the 3rd 60gb i know of that has had problems with GT5 this week alone . ( Mine did develop problems .. it would freeze up after tuning a car and took 2 attempts to install the game with a total time of around 1 and a half hours to install ) It still works luckily as i quit playing GT5 on it and i bought a 320gb to play GT5 on instead of chancing the 60gb.

I wonder if the original PS3's just can't handle this type of game ? If you are reading this and on an first gen PS3 please beaware of them developing problems to the point of YLOD in somecases. It would be a shame to loose your original PS3 over a game.

im still using the 30 gig fat ps3. it's probably about due to fail. if it does, i will just stop playing gt5. lol.

about once a month i dust the entire thing out, or atleast i think i do. maybe that helps keep ps3 juices going...
