Right, but if you said 0-60 drag race the extra downforce and larger engine will obliterate the Z06.
Because aerodynamic downforce takes effect below 60 mp/h, correct?
Again, think what you say through.
At 60 mp/h, and below it, there's almost no air pushing the car down to the ground. At 160 mp/h, there's about sixty million times more aerodynamic downforce. Of course, I'm not actually going to be specific and technical, but, consider the fact that aerodynamics is
ALMOST ALWAYS exponential, consider what exponents are, and then decide for yourself what effect the "extra downforce" will have.
Honestly, if you want a good drag car, you need at least 305s in the rear, a big motor, and no aero at all. Sure, you can have a car as smooth as a Funny car, but, there's no place for downforce.
Consider the evolution of motorsports.
All race cars used to look like this:
But, we found that we could make them faster, by making cars specifically to fit the usage. Then, we had the inventions of three ideas:
- Motors will make cars faster
- Lighter cars are faster
- Aerodynamics play a role in cars, especially cars newer than 1970
Then, we found out that there are even more ways to make cars faster:
- Spending less time in the pits
- Bigger tires add more contact patch, and therefore also more grip
- Chassis ridgity is a huge part of motorsports
- 4WD systems grip better, in low grip situations
All of those improvements are still seen nowadays:
- Rally cars are generally 4WD
- Formula 1 cars/LMP cars use lots of downforce
- DTM cars have pit stops that are shorter than 3 seconds
- Super GT cars have roll cages etc., aerodynamic improvements, and wider tires
- Funny cars are made as sleek and aerodynamically efficient as possible
- Australian V8 Supercars have aerodynamics, rollcages, and wider tires
And, these things are being increasingly seen on sports cars & super cars:
- Königsegg CCX never had a wing, on the back, until it was found to be necessary
- Corvette ZR1, Nissan GT-R, and Viper ACR have much larger tires than normal
- McLaren MP4/12-C, Bugatti Veyron, and Mercedes McLaren SLR all have airbrakes (using air to slow them down while braking)
THOSE, are all specific to track days/street use.
Now, there are five rules to going fast at a drag strip:
- Tires (BIG rear tires)
- motor (big motor)
- suspension
- chassis
- Locking rear differential
I agree, the Viper has four of those, but, you can find better cars than that.
- Cars that don't have aerodynamic downforce
- Cars that have a locking differential
- Cars which have more space in the engine bay for EVEN MORE
- Cars which can have drag tires fitted
