Total Cost of Ownership for the 'GT4 Experience': More than most people are going to bother with.

So we get a whole new game next year with online mode eh? Woohoo, watch me get all excited as PD trot out another cashcow for us all to swallow.

Sony need to get their **** into gear, full stop. Network Entertainment my ass. F1 2004 gives you the staggering ability to race best lap times, nothing more. Sega did that with the Dreamcast and a 56k modem 5 years ago. That new Resident Evil game that was meant to be 4 people getting together online to survive Racoon City, solving puzzles, each with their own unique skills - the Australian version has no online side. Now, GT4 drops online play, after the game was substantially delayed for its inclusion. But, they're going to have an online game ready in 6 months or so. Which means it's pretty much just done right about now. Or, alternatively, it isn't done now, so what hope do they have of making it perfect in 6 months if they couldn't do it in the previous year?

Don't tell me if I don't like it to buy something else. I may. Don't tell me not to buy GT4 if I hate it so much. I don't, but I may not. I'm not blowing this out of proportion. But there are some people wearing business suits that cost more than my car who don't seem to be too in touch with the real world anymore. Whether anyone else agrees with me, I don't know, but online gaming is the future. Why spend billions developing real, learning AI when you can just have a great online mode and pit people against some physical intelligence? Doesn't that make sense? Why do millions of people still play Counter-Strike religiously? It's like, 7 years old, and still they play. Still the mods, the support, the interest remain. And that's just CS, a game with a comparatively short story and little in terms of replay value. Can you imagine GT with that sort of following? A game that lasts years already would become eternal. I don't want spin offs, I don't want expansion packs, I want a fully featured game when I buy it. Don't tell me I should be thankful for what I'm getting. If this was free, then you can say that. But it's not. And it's getting less free with every month. I got an email recently that the service structure for Network Entertainment in Australia would be being overhauled in the coming months. I'm not even going to bother taking bets on where that's going.

So my expectations have plummeted pretty significantly. Online was one of the big things still missing for me that I hoped would be addressed. I think Drag Racing is retarded, I think Drifting is lame for the most part, my dad's a photojournalist and I've been playing with cameras since I could walk, so I don't need to pretend I'm a photographer in Photo Mode, and whilst B Spec mode looks remotely interesting, it all feels pretty contrived as though they're trying to hide the glaring omission. Yes, some people here will love it. But do you think Photo Mode is going to spread more word of mouth and move more units than being the best online racing game of this console generation?

I expect nothing. If I expect too much, I might be disapointed. I don't want to do that again. I expected too much for Resident Evil Code Veronica X, and that game completely sucked eggs.

that game sucked eggs in an entertaining (for the time) way.
 
My expetations are even higher now.

New tracks have been confirmed, new modes, more gameplay, 6 player LAN party mode, The game physics are much improved, more cars!!Great graphics!!...ect :lol: I dont want to mention it all.

GT4 offline mode is slated to relase in December, tons "maybe even more" GT fans dont have BB capabilites than those that do. So they are getting the game that they've been wanting for quite some time. If this is only what they want/can play because of connection limitations then they get it in December. Remember you DONT have to buy GT4 offline if you dont want to, none is making you buy it.

GT4 online has been delayed"""NOT Eliminated alltogether"""""" until 2005 while SONY gets their networks up to snuff. Sure lesser games can be played on the Sony networks, but when it comes to GT4 the networks cant. If you were mainly going to buy GT4 for its online play then this should be seen as just another delay "which it really is"



I really dont see why so many BB capable guys are in a uproar because of this,
With the 6 player LAN party mode, it "MAY" be possible to play GT4 online with tunneling software. IF PD's reason for delaying the online mode until 2005 is true then you wont be playing online through the Sony network when using the tunneling software. You'll be playing through a PC network hooked up to the PS2's. It works for other racing game's so it should work for GT4. YES, its pure speculation right now and we dont know if we will encounter the same problems as PD "may" acutally be having, but we WILL know if it works in December when someone tries it out.
IF I had BB, I really wouldnt be all that worried since there's still that possibilty of playing online with tunneling software.


IMO, PD has done the right thing.
Example 1: ""PD delays the entire game until sometime in 2005, could be 1st quarter, could be a 4th quarter release" The byproduct of this: The whole GT community is pissed off because GT4 has been delayed yet again.

Reality 1: ""PD delays the online mode, but releases GT4 offline mode""" Many people are happy to finally play the game, while others are mad because they cant play online right away or that the only reason why they wanted to get GT4 was to only play online which they cant do until it come's out in 2005.



Heres what I think PD should do to make this all good in a way:
Price GT4 offline at 50 dollars, AND TELL EVERYONE in a new's article that each disk will come with a CD key code, eventually when Sony has their networks up to snuff then PD will announce that everyone with their Key codes needs to send in a letter to Sony, an email to Sony, or call a Sony hotline, and give them that code and your address and Sony sends them a CD for FREE that updates their GT4 game to have the online mode enabled with all of the proper info it needs to have for it to work properly.
OR send a brand new copy of the completed GT4 to everyone.

It makes sense for them to make the online addion disk a Free thing for all of those whom have purchased the GT4 offline.

And then stop producing the GT4 offline disks and only produce GT4 completed disks for the regular price of 50.00.

That way PD and Sony havent shafted their customers out of X ammount of money because they made people pay for 1 game that ended up being 2 games.
Thats the best way out of this situation, without allienating the GT community.

My expectation for Gran Turismo 4 went way up there in HEAVEN! :O I expected it to be like Gran Turismo 3, but with only more cars and more tracks. Now, it all changed when its actually WAY more car than I have expected!:crazy: I am also surprised with the race track list so far and especially the graphics. B-Spec mode is also one of the key thing that pushed its expectation also since I find it very unique for a racing game. :O But one of the biggest thing I have to say that pushed the expectation for me way up to heaven is the list of cars at IGN at this point! Just heavenly! BUT NOT HEAVENLY STILL WITHOUT MY ORINGINAL McCUTEY! :O:O:O
 
my expectations are high. i dnt care about online and never did they shuldnt of even bothered but photo mode and b spec mode is just as crap if not worse gt4 driving simulator? i will not be playing either of those modes but they still cant get backfires and reverse lights? seems stupid to me sorry if dis has been all said before but it has to be said 👎
 
My expectations............. Hmmmmm........... Everyone shuting up about how there is no online mode, until later. So what if you guys have to wait a little bit longer. Tough pickings. My other expectations include. Being able to actually drive the cars again, with the new physics, on all of the new tracks too.
 
I've always said that the non-release of *online* mode now could be a blessing in disguise. It's wholely possible that when a *online GT4* becomes available it maybe with increased cars on the tracks, possibly 12 or more, rather than *6* right now...

The delay also means that potential bugs and problems that 'could' be in the online mode now, can be eliminated before people would inevitably complain about them.

Almost more importantly, possibly even overlooked, is that now that an offline version of GT4 is released, it will give people time to adjust to the GT4 car handling, and more importantly get to know the tracks, BEFORE they're released online, only to bump, whack & hack their ways around a track, only to ruin anothers lap/game/ 'online experience'.
 
Let me tell you something, j8mie. I still have high expectations about this game. I'm not bothered by no online play. Perhaps I'm the only one in this thread who still thinks that it's all about the game. There are so many details to it that has changed while the Gran Turismo experience isn't the same... it's been expanded now. Did we forget that we have a lot of cars and tracks and some new features and an updated physics engine? I'm still looking forward to it.

If I was intrigued with online play, I'll be fine working off of a Local Area Network, but be disappointed about not playing someone somewhere else in Texas, America, North America, or hell... I'll even play penguins in Antartica or Santa Claus in the North Pole. But since I don't consider online play as being more important than a totally revised GT game, I still think GT4 will still be good without it. GT4 isn't ONLY an online racing game. You have to learn to leave without. I know how you feel about not having full online play capabilities, but let me ask this again (so that I can be quoted and made fun of and hated on as usual):

"Have we forgotten what GT4 has to offer BESIDES online play?"

Just a bunch of jive turkeys. So what? When the next ATV Offroad Fury game comes out, it'll probably be "Game of the Year" if the game has crappy music, gameplay, crashes often... all except online.

Oh, and in case you're going to b*tch at me, here's a short version of my post:

By the time GT4 is released in PAL format, Online mode would probably be ready and packaged with the game. I hope!!

Maybe its a big scam and there is no GT4. So they will keep moving back the release date till we don't care and then forget about it.

Do any of you from this site remember the first release date in January this year. Wow what a joke that became. Then it was pushed to around April, then august or september, then november 14th now december 14th. Just rediculous. I knew the January 2004 date was a joke but come on its almost January 2005. 👎
 
Well, if they keep delaying the US version more and more I´ll just buy the Japanese one, that comes out december 3rd. I won´t understand most of the texts, but at least the speedometer comes in km/h. =)

If thats the case then it is ALREADY coming out before the US version since the Us version is coming out on 12/14/04. Well mabey lol

Coming back to the topic!
The expectations have remained the same. Nothings changed for me. Although TGS gave info way more than I had expected from the game. (I wont have broadband untill mid 2005 at home anyways)..
Anyway, I see lots of critics to this game (fans turned critics after the exclusion of online mode or what I dont know).. But hey even The Greatest People and their Makes had/have valid Critics.. So what some of these guys said was very impressive to hear, but that wont change other people's opinion for the game, so they shouldnt really try to convince others that "No-Online Mode / No Ferrari Lambo Porsche" part is sad and no one should buy this game.. We Respect their point of view, and so should they Respect Ours!!

And by the way, wasnt it always 14th December since first day of TGS?

We were told that the online mode was only planned to be about comparing times and selling/buying cars in the net, and that GT4 would now have a very fantastic online mode with Chamionships and that the producers would now try to "make everything that is offline possible also online possible".

That was in february !

And now PD tells us, that absolutely nothing is "online". So what have we waited for in the last 7 months ???

Even if i have the network adapter and even if i already have a broadband connection the online mode is not that important for me.

But i think that this is not the way you should take care of your customers....!

Think about it !
